Ask your beta related questions here!
Check out the new database information as well! Its right at the top of the page, Wint and Pikko are constantly adding more information and improving it!
It has recipes, maps, items, abilities, guildleves, and an increasing documentation of NPC's!

Hit ctrl+f to search for your specific issue. BUT just because you dont find it with that doesnt mean its not here, give it a once over before you post in this thread preferably about the problem you are having.

I'd love it if everyone could add what they can if something is missing and ill update it into the first post later, because this is nowhere near completed... Im sure we'll have much to add to this later. I'll probably get around to doing some better formatting in a day or so as well. (That includes removing this intro up here once we get the ball rolling with this thread)

Some things you should know first.
http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=1283069086196859039&page=1
Yes, its a sticky, they aren't just there for decoration!

Thinking about building a new pc after seeing those specs?
Check out this other sticky!
http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=127800602941853800&page=1

You're going to need the client of course
It can be found here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/215249/210000/fileinfo/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Beta-Launcher
Have fun updating.

Cant connect to anyone or have slow speeds?
Forward your ports!
Details on how to access your router settings can be found at http://portforward.com/
These are the ports you'll be forwarding:
UDP - 55296 - 55551
TCP - 54992 - 55551
UDP - 443 - 443

Still having trouble or just want to avoid as much of SE's updating as possible?
See this thread:
http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/12719-open-beta-megauploadutorrent-links-install-instructions/page__p__263219__hl__torrent__fromsearch__1#entry263219
WARNING! Some people have posted that they downloaded patch files from other sites when the updater didnt work and now cant get the game to load at all, be wary when using third party methods to install this game, lord knows SE makes things everything but user friendly Smiley: lol

Can't get a key?
Tough cookies. Just keep at it, let SE's server know who's boss.
The official link: http://entry.ffxiv.com/
If that one has some kind of error going on, fear not, last night a workaround was conceived in the form of this link, many of us got a key from it (myself included) when the other page was clogged:
https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/login?ret=https://secure.square-enix.com/enqt/e/FF14OBTENTRYJP/html&cont=ffxiv_beta_ap

Got a key but dont know what to do with it?
Im not even going to say anything, instructions come in the email directly under the key you just got.

Cant get passed the login screen of the beta? Nothing happening at all?
Make sure you have active scripting and javascript enabled in internet explorer!

Does the login page refresh and not do anything with the right password, but tell you if its an incorrect one?
Change your SE account password!

Finally made it in to the beta, but things are a bit choppy?
Turn ambient occlusion off!
Things look okay? Turn it off anyway! I have a 5970, and that just puts unneeded strain on my card for almost no graphic gain.
If that doesn't help, you can turn off drawdistance, lower the buffer size, or lower the ammount of multisampling.

Can't run the game at all but you know your system should be able to?
UPDATE YOUR VIDEO CARD DRIVERS!
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST VERSION OF DIRECTX AS WELL!
Now, there's been debate on weather the absolute newest drivers are the best bet for the game at this point. If you're running fine, i wouldn't tinker with a driver update until the retail version comes out.

Still stuck out in the cold? No key? Nothing to do? Want to test your crossfire or sli setup with the benchmark?
ATI cards in crossfire mode, rename FFXivWinBenchmark.exe to 3DMark06.exe
Nvidia cards in sly, rename FFXivWinBenchmark.exe to Crysis.exe
the above file can be found in the /data folder wherever you extracted the benchmark to.

So you finally get to play...I know you want to get your gamepad on!
PS3 controller: (Be warned, its a bit more difficult to set up than the 360 controller)
You'll need a bluetooth dongle, any will do.
Then see this site http://www.motioninjoy.com/

Xbox 360 controller. Easy as pie. If its wired, plug it in. Tadaa, recognized.
If its wireless, score yourself one of these :
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1283466013&sr=8-1

once you have either of those installed, go ahead and map your keys in the ffxiv beta config tool.

Mouse/Keyboard controls:

The game can be play on a mouse/keyboard interface, the only think that you need to do, to control your character like other pc games it's to hold the right click button, that way the mouse will control the camera and you can move your character with the keys (AWSD by default) it's possible to map other keys around your left hand, and then you have it! same control scheme as most PC games.

You have everything set up just how you want it, but you get an error when trying to get to the character selection screen?
If you see this:
Quote:
"The lobby server has encountered an error"
"Error Code: 1015"
"Status: 0"

Then the lobby server, and most likely many others, are down at the moment.
Check this site to make sure the servers are actually up:
http://www.ffxiv-status.com/
(But for the love of god don't f5 assault it)

Want to know how to make macros, switch jobs on the fly, or sit (possibly in chairs)?
Here's the full list of commands, just about all of which can be used for macros:
Thanks to Degausser for this wall of awesome informative text
http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=128345894621150712&page=1&howmany=50#msg1283459352160247270
PS. /sit also regenerates your health about 3 times faster than just reverting to passive mode! Its the new rest!

Essentially, to switch jobs like speedy gonzales, the first line of the macro should change your weapon to the one used by whatever job you wish to be. The next 9 lines should either be used to equip class specific equipment or actions. Starting with /eaction 2 or eaction 3 depending on how many un-removable class skills are stuck at the beginning of your command list. You can change their order around as well, but i dont like wasting the line it takes to do that. For example, if you want second wind in the 4th action slot of your PUG, you would type /eaction 4 "Second wind" main. Main indicating it is for the main hand. Also, abilities with TWO words must be in parenthesis, but one word actions dont need the special treatment.

Dont know what that new status icon is?
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6933/wtfzi.jpg
You need to repair your gear! Apparently this turns red after a while and the gear performance drops significantly. I suppose your durability doesnt have to be too far down to get this warning status, but once it turns red, start looking for a way to fix your things!

Rank 5+ and still using that first ability? Its time you got new ones!
Select ability/traits from the main menu, select a box in the top row next to your first noob ability. On the right half of that window you will see a drop down menu. Click it. Select whatever is in there, it depends on your job/class/whatever you want to call it. You will then see one or more abilities appear below in the previously blank rectangle. Select one or however many you have, and click equip in main hand. Poof, you may now go own mobs harder than you thought possible.

Just started? Stuck in the main city and cant get out?
Talk to the npc's, its likely that you are still in an instance that has to do with the story. Its also highly likely that if you let all the models load, there will be about 20 other players huddled around one NPC. You should see what the commotion is about and talk to the green named guy in the center of all this fun.
Also, in uldah, you'll need to go to the smaller outer ring then from there make your way to the exit, the giant gates in front of it don't open and are quite misleading!

Curious about what abilities you'll have when you aren't a noob anymore?
Teneleven has the scoop in this thread:
http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=128331106212477274#msg1283311166301387971

MP Cannot be regenerated by /siting!
You have to touch a crystal or use an item if you can come by an ether or maybe some kind of juice.
There is also an ability the mage classes get at the start of the game that you can use every 30 minutes to restore varying amounts of MP.

Crafting? Trying to craft? Cant make a pile of dirt?
Use rapid synthesis if you are tying to skill up! Throw some waits in there too for good measure(Mainly if your glowing material is sparking like crazy). There's a system to it, you just need to figure it out!
Need crystals? Go do literally anything. Kill mobs, fish, mine, log. Anything you can do will yield some amount of crystal! Or you could be impatient and go to the forsaken ground of the retainer halls and hunt for them. I prefer the lazy way, put out a buy order on your retainer and they'll do the shopping for you!

Monster Difficulty!
There is an icon by their name.
Blue: Easy prey
Green Decent challenge
Yellow: Tough
Orange: Incredibly tough
Red: Impossible to gauge

Cant find the weapon/tool you want?
If you've already checked the npc shop areas, there is likely a guild dedicated to the profession you want to try, look at the map for your respective city and find its icon!

Japanese text input?
It works and runs off the windows IME. Should you type Japanese characters if you don't know what they mean? Probably not
Hotkeys for switching languages:
ALT-~ (tilde): Cycles between kana and direct input mode
ALT-SHIFT: Cycles through available languages
ALT-CAPS_LOCK: Switches to katakana input mode
CTRL-CAPS_LOCK: Switches to hiragana input mode
SHIFT-ALT: Switches between English mode and Japanese mode.
Control - ~: Switches between the current input mode and the English mode within the Japanese IME.

This might be the most important piece of advice i have to offer
Bored after you finish your leves?
DO NOT come complain that there is nothing to do on these forums. For one, everyone will flame you and tell you the many things there are to do. So ill save you the embarrassment. Here's a few, and its only beta!
Grind! Its an MMO, you cant get around the grind no matter which one you play, you knew that when you signed up. Gather, Fish, Follow someone around town. Get a couple friends to do a /follow train on someone in a noob zone while you go get a pizza. Mess with your retainer, talk to npcs. Who knows, you might find a secret quest!
Complain in the BETA FORUMS if you must complain somewhere. Re allocate your stats and become a mage or melee, whichever you aren't right now. Try to talk a lalafell into a game of football. Endless possibilities, right at your fingertips. Think of all the content yet to come as well.

Wondering what stats affect crafting results?
Alchemy - Int
Armorcraft - Vit
Clothcraft - Mind
Cooking - Piety
Goldsmithing - Dexterity
Leatherworking - ?
Smithing - Strength
Woodworking - ?
The above is based on the level 40 abilities you get that say:
Quote:
Temporarily increases influence of "x skill" on craftsmanship.

That implies there is some influence before the skill is used as well.
You know SE though, they could just be misleading in their wording.

If you guys want to add anything, please have a go at it. Hopefully this cuts down on our forum congestion.

You need to repair your gear! Or do you? As of right now, its only been seen as a bug, no one has actually used up their weapons durability, and this has happened twice on a botanist leve. We'll see where this bug goes...

I've used it up... Seems to happen rather quickly on Pugilist. -.-; The icon became red, 0 durability, and my damage seemed to fall by half.
Otherwise, good job. :3

Haven't seen this anywhere, can you add it to the OP please:

Mouse/Keyboard controls:

The game can be play on a mouse/keyboard interface, the only think that you need to do, to control your character like other pc games it's to hold the right click button, that way the mouse will control the camera and you can move your character with the keys (AWSD by default) it's possible to map other keys around your left hand, and then you have it! same control scheme as most PC games.

Ken

P.D. in order to remap a key in this game it CANNOT be bound to another command otherwise the game won't let you use it, try swapping it with other unused keys first.

So are there shops anywhere? I found one where I could buy a staff and wand and another with some bait but that's it. I would really like to get a newpair of pants or high boots for my lancer.

Why am i getting destroyed by a level ~1 quest? I finished the into quest line, and at the inn i grabbed the four level ~1 quests that required me to kill simple easy stuff. When I go to the camp and initiate the quests and pick 'solo' one star difficulty it has me killing red conned mobs that are in a group of 3 and hit for 150+, its almost like the quest difficulty of a large group.

Does it have anything to do with my physical level being '4' and my class level as '2'? I have had this happen to me on 3 characters in all 3 different starting areas. I am basically stuck at level 4 and can only find the occasional green or blue con mob to kill to level.

I started in the sea / hober town. Liam something >< I have been back and forth throw the city a good deal and I can not find ( obvisouly I missed it) where to buy a blacksmith tool so i can start my quests. The learning curve on all these crafts are high! Very hard to learn , get started ^^ Once I learn the basics ( like finding the right tool! ) It should be much easier.

anyone able to point me in the right direction please. I have found a Pickaxe and a doming hammer and the alchemist tool. still searching for Blacksmith and cooking

Sosuke:
I personally haven't seen any place to buy armor yet, but that seems to be one of the main things the crafting community will be taking care of shortly once they get leveled up. I'll go take a look around town and see if i can spot anyone though!

Milben:
Some of the beginning leves might have a slightly higher rank requirement even though they are in the starting camp area. I've had one that recommends being rank 5 from one of the starting camps i believe. Once again, ill go ingame and get the details about it and add it to the OP. Just try to find a spot that no one has over camped yet with some monsters your level. You can get a couple rank ups in about 15 or 20 minutes that way, and then you'll be able to take on anything in the beginning leves

I believe the blacksmiths guild and the culinary guild will be selling their equipment, not the shops in hawkers alley.

The blacksmiths guild can be found on the bottom of this map, the area with the anvil:
http://www.eorzealore.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/ff33.jpg
And the culinary guild is up and to the left in this image, the icon is a loaf of bread if im not mistaken:

Ok, i looked around for a bit. I wanted to ask. After re-craping your attribute points. You only get a TINY ammount back/taken off. do you just keep hitting it to get them all? (once for each level???) if so....that will suck if you were high level.

just wondering because this game its priding its self on changing the class on the go, but stats matter as we all know. maybe one day i will get sick of my glad and wanna be somethin else. I think maybe i am misunderstanding the system so I am asking to check it out.

Yeah, there's a time limit on how often you can redistribute points, but I'm not sure what it is or if it has changed from beta phases. You're pretty much right though, you just have to keep going back and doing it every so often to get everything how you want.

thanks for the response. well...i think then i should say something on SE forum thingy once...i figure out how to do that. seems odd to me if they are really pushing multiclass. unless what they really want is you to have one battle form and then your craft jobs.

speaking of which. do stats effect crafting? i have mine like 30 Dex/Str/Vit and am doing pretty fine in almost every craft i have done. i think it doesnt matter and is based on craft level but just wondering

I believe different stats affect the different crafts actually. You've reminded me of something to put in the OP, thanks!
See this alchemy ability:
Quote:
Lv40 - Extrapolation
Temporarily increases influence of intelligence on craftsmanship.

Each craft has their own version of this for a different stat, so i'd assume that a higher stat in that area would help a bit, but especially when you get this ability

awesome thanks that would definitly point to stats effect craft. probably effects chance to make a high quality with less damage to durability (i noticed as i got higher levels that the durability reduction of success was now 0 but only for easier crafts)

also to update your MP recovery theirs a chant thing you should mention about MP recovery (only mage classes get to use it) at least thurm(?) has it

Osarion, might you add this to your sticky?

Other things I noticed, I know the database is still new, but we are really working hard to get some cool stuff out there. Check out these types of things:

Abilities:
We are turning these on as fast as we can, check out the Miner page for example: http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/abilitylist.html?class=39

Zones:
Check out the map of Ul'dah:
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/zone.html?ffxivzone=7

Click on the Merchant link on the top right of the map to see the merchant level. Hover over any of the points on the map to see what they are.

Vendors:
http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/mob.html?ffxivmob=1600047

We're working like mad to get all of the vended items in, keep checking back for more as we get them added. I'm about halfway through Ul'dah now.

new info on the ability point resets. seems about an hour between resets. howerever. it resets what you applyed just before it...so you have to not apply, wait an hour. reset repeat if you wanted to rebuild your character. however the amount you reset in one go changes as you level. i believe. have to level to check haha at 10 almost 11]

at lvl 10 ability reset is 8 stats, 12 elemental (each time!) sometimes it seems to do it DOUBLE in a row. i am not sure as to why. i think its buggy so might need to report it. also it responds slowly so it takes a while to register (that has to be a bug) just wanted to update that

Thanks for the information on crafting tools. I have found all I've been searching for.

New question. I attempted to do the crafting quests at the camp (IE) "xxx new sword" and failed badly. Is there a way to get the materials / quest again to try more? besides these starter crafting quests i have no idea how to gain skill enough to rank up. Seems they are the only way untill you raise in rank and gain a recipie. Any help or tips on how to gain enough skill so I can get a recipie to skill-up on would be great. Really want to make a weapon or armor for myself. still in starter gear and i have a red icon durability issue :((

Got a few questions..

Last night my beta was running great, And today it seems laggy as ****, When i click the Aetherite (SP?) stone to do a leve quest or whatever, it takes 5 or 6 seconds to show up.

Last night i could use all my stamina gauge with attacks and today this is also laggy as ****, by the time I use my attack and can use my next one my stamina is full again.. is this lag or how it's meant to be?

And is there a gladiators guild in Darminia or whatever it is.. the forest city, I can find the archers guild and stuff on the map but doesn't seem to be a gladiators one, and if there isnt, can you tell me where one is?

I know you already touched on people having problems running the game well but I have an addition to that.

Framerate Problems? Game doesn't run as well as it should? Ran good in CB but doesn't in OB?

If you are having troubles with framerate, UI lag, mouse lag, blacked out cutscenes, or any type of performance issues at all then simply go to your config file and change your resolution to windowed mode at one resolution lower than your monitors standard resolution. Here is a list of resolutions by aspect ratio since they aren't organized in the config:

Quote:
List of 4:3 Monitor Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
640x480-----4:3
800x600-----4:3
1024x768-----4:3
1152x864-----4:3
1280x960-----4:3
1400x1050-----4:3
1600x1200-----4:3
2048x1536-----4:3
3200x2400-----4:3
4000x3000-----4:3
6400x4800-----4:3

List of 16:9 Widescreen Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
852x480-----16:9
1280x720-----16:9
1365x768-----16:9
1600x900-----16:9
1920x1080-----16:9

List of 16:10 Widescreen Resolutions
Resolution - Aspect ratio
1440x900-----16:10
1680x1050-----16:10
1920x1200-----16:10
2560x1600-----16:10
3840x2400-----16:10
7680x4800-----16:10

For example my resolution is a 16:10 aspect ratio at 1680x1050, so I changed to windowed mode at 1440x900. Doing this fix allowed me to go from barely running the game at all lowest settings to being able to run it at all highest with DoF on and 2xMSAA(can actually run with 8x and AO too but don't see a difference so shut them off).

EDIT: Plus in windowed mode you can alt+tab without getting that stupid Direct X error!

Really? Its far too easy to find. Open your map from Black brush or anywhere in that 'zone', go one zone to the left. Tadaa, a camp aetherite icon with the name, not 4 squares in to it...

I'm in the open beta and I've got a question. I played for a little bit, and then the servers came down. The next day I logged in and found my minimap had disappeared. I've looked all around and seen no indication that it's supposed to be toggleable. I've tried pushing every key and gone through all the configuration menus. Any ideas?

Thanks

I know you can take screenshots with Scroll Lock + Print Screen, but how do you access them? I can't seem to find the subdirectory.

In Windows 7, go to C:\ drive and then My Documents. Click on My Games, Final Fantasy XIV Beta version. There should be a folder there labeled Screenshots.

Does anyone know how to access Mor Dhona from Uldah. Or is it inaccessible?

I'm having an issue where I'm stuck on a seemingly endless "Now Loading..." screen after trying to log back in following a disconnect. (It was a traditional disconnect, with the Send/Receive icon showing red, no error messages or anything.) After a few minutes of waiting through it, I just auto-booted myself. Since then, I just can't seem to load up that character in the world. I'm even able to create other characters and log them into other worlds just fine. I've restarted the game (and even the computer), but nothing seems to work. Has anyone else had this problem? How was it resolved?

EDIT: All is well now, seems like that character was somehow corrupted and i had to make another.

Ok, I followed all of the steps for port forwarding, but still nothing. If I run the updater, I will upload my maximum bandwidth amount (75kb/sec), but not even see a 5 kb/sec download. Trying the torrent method,it will jump to 200 kb/sec in the beginning, but drop down to under 20 kb/sec... also, my router doesn't have UDP or TCP and all that.. http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/ZyXEL/EQ-660R/

Can anybody help me? I was so happy to get a BETA key, and now I can't even download the first file..

Q : How can we sort inventory?

I cant find any way to do it, and with the laggy-*** scrolling, its becoming quite annoying to scroll all over the place for things placed in obscure parts of my list.

You should be able to manually download the patch files directly from megaupload using the links there.

I have been trying to get an OB key all afternoon/evening off and on with no luck. I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any clue as to when new keys will be released?

For the record, I find it rediculous that those of us that were involved with testing since Alpha have to reapply. I havent complained about anything....anything at all, until this point..../sigh

I suppose if I can't get in at least I'll have college football to fill my saturday, GO BLUE! :)

Got a graphic error some how, IDK. I scored 2800 on bench with no errors or any of this. and my hubby can play on his laptop no problem and he scored like 1800. Happens in both windowed and full screen, various window sizes. did multisampling off and low setting, shadow detail lowest. Ambient Occlusion off (IDK), texture quality all the settings, and filtering high and lowest. Downloaded driver for graphics card, all same result off:

Computer info if it helps any, want to figure if its graphics card or seomthing before i go run to best buy lol.

Your router just forwards all connections on the ports, no need for tcp/udp distinction. Also, you'll just have to leave it up for a while, it takes between 5 and 10 minutes to connect most of the time. You could also try following the link in the OP to get some of the updates from 3rd party sources such as mega upload.

It auto stacks for you, but i've not seen a sort inventory option either, maybe its something to look forward to in retail like map markers.

Jharia: Just keep at it, They gave them out randomly on opening day, it shouldn't be too different now. It probably has something to do with when they add another server or congestion goes down.

I have a question about the Japanese Windows IME, since I am not used to using the IME in games (only from the language bar in Windows). To type in both English and Japanese in game, you would need to play windowed so you can switch the language on the language bar for whatever input you need? I'm not sure how you could just switch on the fly in game...

I don't really have plans to talk much Japanese for a while yet (even though yes, I can and understand it...), but am curious to know when the opportunities do come up. Thanks. ^^

(I ask because I don't like to play windowed due to my monitor setup, and would not know how to do it while playing full-screen)

There are some keyboard shortcuts to switch around between different inputs in the japanese IME:
ALT-~ (tilde): Cycles between kana and direct input mode

ALT-SHIFT: Cycles through available languages

ALT-CAPS_LOCK: Switches to katakana input mode

CTRL-CAPS_LOCK: Switches to hiragana input mode

SHIFT-ALT: Switches between English mode and Japanese mode.

Control - ~: Switches between the current input mode and the English mode within the Japanese IME.

I lost my minimap too, here's how I fixed it: If you look around your screen, around the borders, you'll be able to see a small part of you minimap - it's just been moved over (since we can now "customize" the UI) Just point you mouse around the edges of your screen and keep dragging over. Eventually you'll hit it.

My question: Starting in LL, I took the ferry and it dropped me off in some place with red mobs that whoop my ****. How do I get to Ul'dah from LL? Is it by ferry, or can I quickly get there by foot? Also, is need to repair my fishing rod, I think I need to use a carpenter tool to do so, anyone know where I can get one? Or where the Carpenter's Guild is? Thanks.

Ok I've done some basic searching around with no results.

I'm thinking my "Treasures of the Main" quest glitched out. I still had items in the quest to talk to people but I was summoned to the wench for a chat, the barkeep payed me 10k gil and my quest was "over". I never found any resolution to the story of the treasure on the island... Now I can't find a new quest anywhere. Completed all the leves for battle and my skillcraft... any similar experiences or advice?

Do monsters drop equipment of any kind?
I have been griding my class rank up for a while now and have not come across any in my loot bag.
Is it a crafting thing and/or obtained from harder mobs only? Or just happens to be a very low drop rate?
(I have never played FFXI so I can't assume from that game)
