I know everyone wants to keep their secrets to themselves so they have a slight advantage going into retail but please share about your findings, help the rest of us who are clueless out...I'll start by giving you a good tip if you're starting out in Ul'Dah.

Strained on gil? you're probably gonna be killing marmots quite a bit, and getting a lot of loot off them - you can throw everything out but DON'T throw out the "Marmot Pelt"s, they sell at 500 gil a peice to vendors and you can easily stock up on them, they're a good quick way to make easy gil.

Now...can someone tell me how to get fire crystals? lol. Please share your findings, lets help each other out...anything you find useful someone else will for sure.

Well, this can't be said enough...finish the opening quest! Yes, even the annoying emote parts = P You end up with 30k for your troubles...more than enough to get started with whatever you wanna do. The journal is very helpful in keeping up with this...

Hmmm...Romululu's Bric-a-Brac west of the Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah sells the 2 starter weapons for Conjurer & Thaumature, has some level1 gear, and 2 higher level, very expensive shields...

I'll try to add more later...

Thanks TwistedOwl, good advice, i'm gonna do that quest now, just recently learned of the good payout. I'd also like to add, in Ul'Dah, if you open the map you'll find a place on there called "The Dunes", don't worry its not Valkurm so don't be afraid to go there and set up your retainer to sell stuff (remember to get a retainer first in the pub). The Dunes is the market ward, lets start filling it up with stuff we wanna sell.

If you aren't go to do any DoH stuff(crafting) then sell your shards and crystals. I usually wait till I have stacks of 50 to sell shards, and 10 to sell crystals. Very profitable. Also if you don't want to craft but are okay with gathering, leveling a gathering job can be a great source of money. =)

Anyone know the macro to equip secondary weapon? I can't remember it i used it in closed beta but i tried the following and none work:

/equip secondary "weapon name"

/equip off "weapon name"

/equip second "weapon name"

nevermind that, I'll keep that for another topic...come on guys keep sharing your knowledge so far, this'll only help you out as we go along here :D

I guess this should be put in here.
/sit is the new rest, you regenerate health 3 or 4 times faster when doing that.
check the link in my sig for the macro advice as well solidmack
And i dont know where crystals come from, im assuming tougher mobs or higher level quests. I had some in closed beta and i didnt harvest so it would have to be from those two

you start out with a hat if you are a fisherman. You can buy one at the fishing guild too. Other than that, find someone to make you one

Thanks for the help guys, keep the tips coming. I have a new one (sort of), it seems like they're making city to city travel much faster this time around - the ferry that docks in Limsa takes you pretty much a few miles outside of Ul'Dah...i haven't found Gridania yet but I'm guessing this is so we're not restricted by which city to start in...i like it.

What timing! I just got off the ferry you speak of, went on a little fishing trip. There was a hume on the boat next to me who had a light on the end of his fishing pole, and as we were nearing the shore, a trident appeared in his arm. Right through the forearm. Of course print screen didnt work, so im installing fraps to catch some funny beta glitches in action. Everyone else should do the same, i propose a funny beta pics contest on the 21'st when we are all giddy with anticipation!

where can you find the ferry in/near Ul'Dah?

As for fire crystals they drop off of the copper spidery things (whatever they are called) and you can get them from mining.

Has anyone gotten wind shards in Ul'Dah? It is insane that the goldsmith guild is there and most of the low level synths need wind shards but they are nigh impossible to find.

I had 7 wind shards whel i left on the ferry, but im not sure where they came from. You can fish them up, but they are a rarity coming from water. The ferry is to the left on the map screen, open it up and just go left from the base camp, passed the rank 10 second camp, and you should see it

Errr at least wait.

3 weeks to fix these issues isn't a whole ton of time, and when release hits we'll all start over with 1000 people crammed into killing 8 mushroom spawns again :)

Here's a share for you. I'm running 2 monitors atm, and usually i have to play in windowed mode, because if i click on anything on the other monitor, it would boot me out in fullscreen mode.

I'm posting this while playing fullscreen. Maybe they fixed this before, and i just haven't tried it out. I'm just happy to play in fullscreen mode again.

That was 3 things but here is your answer ;):

1) Equip another weapon and you become that job (so say you equip a sword, you become a gladiator, and change on the fly).

2) When you target a mob, next to its name/health bar there is an indicator that is colored red > orange > yellow > green > blue, where red is toughest > blue is easiest...basically avoid anything above green unless MAYBE if you're a Conjurer but that's a big maybe.

3) Open up your main menu by tapping "-" (minus) once; second option "Actions & Traits", click it - click on an empty ability slot (it'll highlight it blue after you click it), now click on the drop down menu, select your class, it'll bring up a list of all learned abilities for that class - choose the one you want and select "main hand".

3a) second way to do it, if you know the name of the ability, you can macro it in as /eaction # "ability name" where # is the slot number...you can even just type this in and click enter and it'll work.

I need to know where to get fire crystals and wind shards from so I can start crafting some half decent armour.

And for my blacksmithing so I can begin to make my bronze gladius,

But i also need another SHED LOAD of items for the bronze gladius, which I don't have a clue where to get them from.

Also when i just tried accepting a mining leve, it says you have to exchange it by clicking a leve in your inventory.. and it wont even let me click one, they're all dulled out.. anyone got any ideas?

EDIT: then why i try click the exchange button is says I have no exchangable leves.. is there a limit on how many you can do a day or something?

You can get fire shards by fishing, sometimes I catch 2 fish and get 3 fire shards for no reason, I guess you get those for cooking, but who knows.

As for another tip:

If you are in Camp Bearded Rock travel west until you see a "valley" with moles, enter the valley and turn left on the first cave you see.
After a long walk you will see light on the other end of the tunnel, a small plateau with a lot of rats (5+) and a sporeling collector or something. The sporeling aggro's and can be quite tough, but other than that the place is heaven if you want to grind a few levels. You jump mob to mob and the respawn is quite fast. Good XP and the mobs are easy!

Speaking of cooking where do you buy those cooking equipment, and where can you repair?

I just now walked from Gridania to Ul'dah. Fairly easy walk, takes about an hour or less. Head South from Gridania and just keep following the road. Or North/North East out of Ul'dah and follow the road.

I'm not sure how to get to Limsa though.

Yea maybe but do you get the feeling the map isn't that big? atleast on the surface it doesn't feel as big as FFXI's map, i hope there's layers and layers of locations to visit.

I've run to all 3 starting cities and they're about 30-35 mins apart, which is about what it took in FFXI to run between cities. Plus did you play FFXI when it first started? There really wasn't all that much there until the expansions started coming out. :D

Yes that was the original cap. The game had many zones even then but most went unused due stupid placement of Mobs.
So many places people could've camps but was impossible due to linking or way higher lvl mobs being in the area.

Hence why a lot of people used the same camping spots throughout. Thats pretty much changed since DNC and BLU came into the picture.

I'm still in the starting area in 14 and I like it so far. Just to many people hunting the same mobs. I hope they find a way to fix that before retail or it's going to annoy people. Maybe increase the spawn rate till it dies down.

I think I'm missing something as far as abilities go. Currently I'm a level 1 botanist, and have access to Arbor Call on the right side of the abilities screen. How do I go about assigning it to a slot on the left side of the screen and/or using it? I try to assign, it asks me if I want main/offhand, but doesn't actually make an icon for me to use. I hope I'm making sense, I've been looking through the beta manual and through google searches.

BlueDolphin try giving it a second after equipping it there is input lag in that menu - also, read your log, if you equip an ability to a slot the log should read something like "You equipped Ability to slot #", remember too to keep an out out on your AP (Ability Points). AP determines how many abilities you can have on the bar at once time, each ability costs some AP..

Any interesting new Pugilist armor around?I've been running around in the same level 1 duds for a while and now I'm level 7 physical level 6 pugilist. I'm just curious because there don't seem to be many vendors in Gridania selling new armor and last I checked the merchant's ward retainers weren't selling armor either.

Of course I could craft, but I'm only planning on doing a little bit of fishing for now. But if anyone's got interesting craft recipes I'll level the job that can do it, haha.

When you go to a new nation, does it initiate any of the opening movie to that nation? Seems like the cutscenes will be relevant to later quests, so I'm wondering how we'll view them all on one character.
