Having issues figuring out class..Follow

So, if anyone saw my last topic.. I got in ;D

Anyways, I've been trying to figure out the different ranks of these classes, but since I haven't really played the older Final Fantasy's (Yes, you can attack me for that) I really don't know which is what.

My aim is for a melee DPS that can use swords and be useful :P A lot of talk says Gladiator is tank so I feel as if that is ruled out unless they could be dps? I'm just not much of a tanking type.

If the sword is a must, then Gladiator is your choice for now...if that's changeable, go with Marauder, Pugilist, or Lancer. I've had a lot of fun with Marauder & Pugilist...haven't played much Lancer.

I'm actually looking forward to playing Lancer. It kinda jumped out at me when I was looking through the classes. I'm sitting here drooling over this game, but the downloader is taking it's sweet time! 250k upload, 20k download :( 11 hour eta =\

When it would come to gladiator though, is tanking its only future?

The thing about jobs in FFXIV that's different from the others is that really you'll be combining different aspects of different jobs to build up your own. You may technically be a Gladiator, but you could conceivably pull skills from Conjurer and Pugilist, say. As for the future, nobody knows for sure what's going to happen with job expectations, that'll grow organically as we go.

Actually I wouldn't say that for sure. Since you can equip skills from the other classes, gladiator could be turned into a damage dealer...how efficient and powerful I can't say. One thing is that although you can create hybrids, other classes don't use them to their full capabilities. The power of the ability could be weaker, the recast timers will be longer, etc. There may be traits you can add on to improve that kind of thing, but since gladiator will already be really good at using gladiator abilities, many would use the provokes & defensive moves for a tanking class.

Doesn't hurt to try it though...

Would be really cool if you could end up dual-wielding with that class...

You can build a DPS sword class by playing all or some of the DPS classes in game like Marauder, Pugilist and Lancer and equipping their abilities on a Gladiator build - at the same time your stat point allocation should favor strength, nothing set in stone here, be creative.

Oh? That's rather good to hear. I didn't know skills from other jobs could be combined. That honestly opens up a good possible gladiator DPS or other combination with other classes that would feed my need to hack something down with a sword while pushing out decent DPS xD Thank you for the responses. You've all been a great help! ^^

You can be a gladiator, but you really don't have to be a tank, just put all your physical stats in strength and dexterity, and not so much in vitality, that will pretty much make you a glass cannon, you never have to equip a shield if you don't want to, and you can probably dual wield at some point? So I am guessing no, you don't have to be a tank.

You might not be as good a DPS as other classes, since main abilities focus on defense, but you could still DPS. Dunno if the community would flame you for this or embrace it, only time will tell.
