First time playing a FF MMO, have questionsFollow

Hi
Ive been lurking these forums for a while ever since I heard about the beta for FFXIV. From trouble downloading the client and its updates to finally being able to get a key this morning.
I have a couple of problems though like when I use my keyboard my character only walks and doesn't want to run. I tried pressing 7 on the number pad or R and nothing. Also when I try to change the keys in the keyboard settings nothing happens. The game doesn't really seem to tell you what to do which pretty much leaves you out in the dust if you never played an FF mmo before.
Finally, what is/are good east coast servers?

Keyboard controls are something I not familiar with.

If you prefer - the game works excellent with a Gamepad/Xbox/PS3 controller. It was almost designed to function in that way. SE even stated that the only reason they're pushing on Keyboard/Mouse controls is because the majority of Japanese players all use gamepads.

Server Wise - all servers are in Japan - I don't think there's been any servers dedicated strictly to regions/time zones unless specific Linkshells are staking their claims based on that.

That being said - although the time difference is unfortunate - I spent the majority of my time in FFXI playing with a Linkshell full of people from Singapore, California, EU, etc. I live in Florida.

X is the walk/run toggle

all servers are for everyone though you can try to find one where more people from wherever are on it... it is pretty much impossible to tell.

I believe toggling between walk/run is the 'c' 'v' or 'x' button.
One of those 3 if I remember correctly.

also another protip - if you /sit the only way to get up is to /sit again... which is counter-intuitive and took me a couple minutes to figure out

Worked the same way in FFXI, IIRC

thanks for the quick responses
One other question, I chose be a Thurmager (sp?) considering I wanted to be a ranged magic damage dealer. Is this the correct choice in class or are classes more dynamic in FFXIV?

I thought moving would make your character stand up in XI? That was my first instinct when I tried /sit for the first time in XIV, anyway.

Thaumaturge, and that class seems to be more buffing/debuffing. If you're looking for the classic spells like Fire and Blizzard, you want to play Conjurer. You can have spells from one class on the other, but it does change the dynamics a bit. I beleive that Thaumaturge spells are conal AoE, while Conjurer are radial.

Probably... been almost a year since I've played XI.
