My Impressions Take 2 - Open Beta (Uh Oh)Follow

Open Beta is here, here are my impressions...

A LOT of the lagginess has been fixed, menu and UI lag, it's a lot more smooth and seamless, it doesn't feel so 'clunky'. There is still a little bit left, but I imagine this will go away with time. There is no lagginess at all in cutscenes. I play with a controller so I don't feel any of the mouse/keyboard pain.

A LOT less crashes and errors, but there are some occasionally.

The only major issue that remains for me is that targeting needs to be improved. The XI system of autotargeting the next mob was good and bad, but I would say more good than bad. I don't want to manually target the next enemy, and I don't want to default target myself when I tab. I see this getting fixed.

The world STILL looks beautiful, and Ul'Dah and the surrounding area looks awesome, I'm in <3

So far, the game seems like a mix of partying and solo, party up for the leves, then grind it out a little bit on your own. In 5 hours (one night of gameplay) I managed to get to Gladiator 8/Phys 10, which is probably about the time it took me to get to lvl 8 in FFXI. Haven't done any party grinding yet, but I attribute this to not knowing where the XP "camps" are. There are also some still sealed off areas that you can't go to, i.e. "The Dunes". I still haven't touched another class, but plan on leveling pugilist to equal rank for Taunt and Second Wind. I haven't seen anything pop up that says surplus. Once I hit level 10, I can do the level 10 leves.

Doing a few guild eves, I met a great group of people (Mysidia). Everyone was friendly and most had experience with XI. Everyone was patient and waited for D/C's and for people to get their favor. It was so great, the people said "Let's start our own LS".

I've found that I have a LOT more gil this time around, in XI you had to scratch and claw in the beginning to make money. But, this could be just inflation.

Feels a lot like XI, but different. Big time graphics update. The class system and physical level system give more of a customization control to your character and make your character well rounded. Even though I started Elezan, I've stacked a LOT of points on Vitality and now have a lot of HP and defense. Music is nice, the Ul'Dah music is this sort of mellow/dramatic/dreamy piano score. Anything beats the Gustaberg music.

Where does the "Uh Oh" come in? I feel like I'm getting a taste of what could be a long term relationship... like when you date a girl the first couple times and think Oh Sh- this could last a while... haven't felt like this since XI. What can I say, I "feel" the immersion. Today at work I feel cracked out and tired from staying up too late, and I want me some more.

Don't cancel your preorder yet, I'd say give this one a shot and see where it leads.

Good read, rate up.

Glad you're enjoying the game - more importantly meeting people like that. Glad to see the playerbase maintains the relative ease of atmosphere like FFXI. Very neat.

The Dunes isn't really sealed off - it is just a "telepoint" thingy to the market wards

Or cancel your pre-order and wait a few months and see what the mass of players think of it, then you can make an informed decision instead of throwing money on the unknown.

Oh yeah, I always make my decisions based on what the masses are doing, I forgot. I guess I should shred all my "unpopular" cds and buy some Jonas Brothers albums or maybe Justin Beiber... and why am I even on a FFXIV forum? The masses all like WoW so I should just play that regardless of my preferences - because following the herd is by definition, an informed decision.

Don't feel dumb. It's an extraordinarily unintuitive system. There's no way for anyone to figure it out except by a tiny icon at the top of your screen when you get near it.

It was bad in Limsa, but even people who were in the earlier betas think that Ul'dah has no market wards because it's even less clear there (called "The Dunes" instead of The Wards).

I think your other comments are right on. The first night of open beta, the server population was low and the interface lag was nearly gone. It was the first time the game ever felt really smooth and playable for me. But since yesterday morning, the lag has been back. I guess it's good to know that the problem is solvable, but I don't know how realistic it is to expect minimal lag on a popular game with its servers in Japan. What they ought to do for a real solution is move more of the menu functions client-side.

And like you said, targeting still sucks. God help you if you need to retarget a mole after it pops out of the ground. I swear that the only way to do it is with the mouse.

Crafting classes and Magic classes still need work. We need stored recipes and quick craft buttons for the former and improved targeting for the latter.

And for the love of god, give us an auction house.

There are a thousand other issues I come across in a day of playing. Some of them are minor, and some of them are so fundamental that it doesn't occur to me that they won't be fixed (so I never remember them). But I think the game is on its way.

You may want to be a special little snowflake but if almost everyone thinks the game is crap, there is a good chance you will too. If not you then most people work that way.

You said you play with controller. Have the fixed it so that drop down menus can be selected via controller now as well or do you still have to switch back over to the mouse?

You can select full screen by going in through the program files and selecting the FFXIV Configurator. It is separate from the Beta program that allows you to play.

Its not about being a special snowflake, some of us simply believe in our own choices rather than that of others. Not saying its bad to look at others thoughts and opinions but if you base all your decisions off that your just playing what everyone else likes without thinking about it on your own.

If your going to let other peoples opinions choose what you do for you, at least make sure they are people with similar views and tastes.

An example is I know some people who buy video games purely off of reviews. Sometimes, they buy a game with an awesome review and they hate it, because they didn't bother to check the games compatibility with their own wishes, it didn't give them a **** thing they wanted and it was never made to. It had good reviews though, so it must be worth getting. Right?

On the other hand, I buy games completely off my own intuition. I will look at the case, flip it over look at the back, think about what kind of game it is, who made it, then often buy it. Now if I'm on the fence or unsure I'll jump on the internet and check out some videos and screenshots (never reviews I don't trust them). 9 times out of 10 I love the games I buy, the other 1 is so-so. Only very rarely do I make a mistaken buy.

Drop downs were fixed for the controller from CB to OB, which I was very happy with. I don't use a mouse for anything except resizing chat UI.

Perfect, thanks.

Maybe it is worth giving another try.
