I've gotten replies but not to shouts. People generally don't spam public channels in FFXI - I'm imagining it is the same in FFXIV

Using the public channel in XI was called "shouting" as O said, and it was actually seen as a bit disrespectful, unless you were shouting for a group... the communication is not like the public channels in WoW if that's what you're used to.

I used shout all the time in XI. I could care less if anyone thought it was disrespectful. Its a game not church. I did this on server Fairy. No one seemed to care except for GMs when I decided to curse.

There may just not have been enough people in the area that someone would respond, though as Olorinus and Oenos said generally using /shout is avoided (and often ignored because usually the people who would /sh were morons). Of course, that being said, I'm not sure how a newbie is expected to acclimate to the game if they can't ask questions, and how are they to ask questions without coming across as annoying? :\ (While you could conduct a conversation in /t or /s, how would you get someone's assistance in the first place? Not like we have Mentors who can flag up, or even a /search system at this point even if there were Mentors.)

EDIT - grammar fail

(You): Excuse me, do you have a minute?
(Random Miqo'te bystander): Nya?
(You): How do you go about doing ______?

I know, it's hard, but a polite introduction works wonder to break the ice!

Talking is a bit of a pain at the mo, the lag in the chatbox on my server is horrendous.
