Man all i've been wanting to do since yesterday is try leveling goldsmith since i have a ton of supplies. But the **** wind shards!!!! I have been mining up a storm and have a billion earth and ice shards, but wind is so rare, even on monsters in the forest....

I know other gathering crafts must get more wind than anything else, anyone know which it is? (I'm guessing logging or harvesting). And any low level monster in other areas drop a lot of wind shards?

This is quickly becoming the biggest cockblock in the game for me. 350 earth shards, 5 wind...

Wind shards were the rarest shards for me near LL, and the only ones I've gotten near Uldah came from a random chest. I think I have several hundred earth, over a hundred fire and ice, only a few water and wind, and no lightning. So either these things are dropping like rain near gridania, or there's a secret method of acquiring them that I don't know about.

I actually have a wind guardian I'm from Ul'dah (which is useless information since i'm in all 3 cities evenly), but I consistently have problems with getting wind shards as well.. my best bet getting wind shards so far is from fishing... honestly yes fishing i know... the problem is all my crafts seem to use em and I cant get past running short on them constantly.

is there a way to purchase wind shards short of off another character, because this is slowing my progress, considerably I find myself either fishing / killing monsters all one day, then crafting another day.. when i want a nice balance to them all.

Kill Ewes, they drop about 6 wind shards per kill, you can find a plethora of them past moraby bay in limsa.

However, they are super squishy and they even squeak when you hit them. Their cuteness usually gets to me after an hour and I leave all sad >_>

edit: I'd like to point out that I usually have close to 200 shards after less than an hour of farming, with heavy competition. (They pop pretty quickly, and there are a lot of them)

If you want wind shards, put your elemental points into wind. Then, everytime you mine/harvest, you will get wind shards.

Edit: i get 1-3 shards per mining point. sometimes 4.

As one of my LS buddies says, anything that has WINGS will drop wind shards...

I've sold so many wind shards... People were paying 20k+ per 100. It's all good if you don't want to go the DOH route, but it isn't hard to get them either.

And then there is this. It is true. Go fight puk hatchlings in LL if you don't want to DOH. Pretty much anything that flies or can fly will drop wind shards.

We're still categorizing, but here're the mobs we have in the wind category. They can drop six.

There's also this: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/Mob_Elements

That will tell you what other elemental trait you should look for, which is lightning and water.

Is this the kind of info you were asking for?

That makes sense if you look at my loadstone page. Right now my elemental attributes look like this:

Elements
Fire
20 (20)
Water
23 (23)
Lightning
46 (46)
Wind
58 (58)
Earth
17 (17)
Ice
17 (17)

I have 76 of points in wind. They drop pretty frequently when I gather as a botanist.

That's too much. At 45, all i got was wind shards. You should consider reallocating some of those points. Lightning is pretty popular.

I checked my inventory this morning and had 999 wind shards. I have no idea where they came from, but it was a nice surprise.
