Sephrick's Beginner's Guide: The Basics

A Disciples of the Pen Writing Guide

Sephrick's Beginner's Guide: Limsa Lominsa

Sephrick's Beginner's Guide: Gridania

Sephrick's Beginner's Guide: Ul'dah

UPDATE Sept. 14 2010:
I've decided to put the cities beginner's guides out there. The foundation is there, but they could use a little work. They were only intended to be add-ons to the Basics guide to help someone just starting out to find some of the essentials.

I'm a little nervous about these because a lot of work went into them. Still, I'll be happy with any sort of constructive criticism. Feel free to take a look and let me know what you all think and what you wish you'd have known starting off that isn't already in there.

UPDATE Sept. 10 2010:
I've added sections on equipping abilities, "Teleporting, Return and Anima," and interacting with non-targetable objects.

My next update should include some clean up of the layout, a little about guildleves and obtaining and setting up a retainer.

Also, I'd like to introduce my writing guide for those wanting to write something for ZAM's OpEd feature, Disciples of the Pen. Check it out:
I've put together a small guide in the wiki for those needing help getting started once their character is in the world.

This guide is intended only to cover the basics, and is in beta itself. It is in no way meant to be all-inclusive of the information one will need to function in Final Fantasy XIV. Part of the fun is discovering things for yourself.

I will continue to edit it as frequent questions crop up and information changes. Once we find out more information about things like how choices such as gods, birth signs and the like affect our characters I will update. Feel free to make any suggestions of things you'd like to see included.

Soon, I will have Beginner's guides for the starting cities as well. For now, I just wanted to get this out there and get some feedback on it. I'll update this post once they are completed, should be sometime this weekend.

This is great! FFXIV is kind of cool in that it doesn't hand-hold you for everything. You have to run around, explore, and talk to NPCs and absorb the background in order to do your quests. It's not just running between NPCs with exclamation points over their heads which are big glowing beacons on your mini map. But at least in the beta, the lack of hand-holding can be a little overwhelming. I think one reason that FFXI had so many adult players and so few rambunctious children is that the game required a little more focus to figure out and deconstruct and succeed. I think, while FFXIV is making a lot of improvements, it's so far looking like it's geared toward the same crowd. But still, it's nice to have a basic guide to take a little bit of the mystery out of the game.

Great idea! Thanks for making this guide! Be sure to highlight returning, since its probably the least intuitive thing. I think some things you didn't mention that might be helpful are: a note that beginning abilities can be acquired from the starting quest NPC, a reminder to read The Call of Adventure, and the location of the market wards. I think the location of the market wards is probably the most asked question I've seen in game.

If I may comment on your chart showing controls, you forgot the 'Z' button toggles area effect abilities on and off.

The funny thing about that is -- as I noted in that first reference -- they are from the beta tester's Web sit. So SE forgot to make mention of that, lol. I appreciate you pointing that out, I'll be sure to add it in my next update.

@Wint: That's a great idea. I'll have to PM him later. ^ ^

I really wish I'd seen this sooner. I was rank 5 before I saw that there was a dropdown menu I had to go into before I could equip new abilities. I was getting a little frustrated because the NPC said to go to that menu to equip new abilities, but there were none showing. I kind of wish the menu would be auto set to the job you're on.

The link seems to be broken, or rather the guide itself has moved, been deleted, or is otherwise missing.

Looks like ZAM has been doing some house keeping and moved a few things around. Link should work again.

Another shameless promotion bump.

Admins: I promise this will be the last self-bump for a while. Just wanted to get the city guides advertised a little.
