I'm going to use a ps2 controller for the game, but I don't really know which buttons to map for the controller. Anyone that uses a ps2/ps3 controller: What is the button setup that worked best for you?

I use a logitech controller with the same buttons as a Playstation controller. Here is my set up:

Directional pad: Menus
Left stick: Movement
Right stick: Camera
Triangle: Open menu
X: Confirm
Circle: Cancle
R2: Ctrl macros
L2: Alt macros
R1: Lock on
L1: Toggle active and passive modes
R3: Auto-run
L3: Open emote menu
Select: Open Map

I think that's about it.

That looks good. Better than what I was gonna do. I did edit it a bit (I think you have L2 twice as well) but I like it.

Here's what mine will be for now I guess:

To localize the gamepad mapping thats on the beta site, you just swap square with triangle, and circle with x.
The one command they are missing the emote, which would be square or triangle.

@ Sephrick :

Does the logitech gamepad work ok for you when your running? I dont know if we have the same controller but for some reason when im running if i start going at a diagonal angle it makes me stop and then walk for a few seconds. It kinda sucks because it completely ruins the controller play for me :(

Mine is just called the Logitech Dual Action something or another. It basically looks like a blue PS controller.

But I think what you're describing is a "feature." Try turning physics off and see if your character still does it. I knew when I quickly change direction, my character will react to having to throw their weight into a new direction and they'll stop for a second and start moving in the new direction, but without physics it just moves in the new direction without all the bells and whistles.

Otherwise, I couldn't really say without seeing it.

I was seeing this issue with the Logitech gamepad as well. Basically, movement in any one of the four orthogonal directions (i.e. forward, back, left, or right) was at running speed. When I tried moving in a diagonal direction (e.g. forward-left), my character slowed down to a walk. This wasn't a physics issue either, because my character stayed at walking pace with the toggle at a diagonal. I then switched my gamepad to a Madcatz, and can run with the toggle at a diagonal.

Also, with the Logitech I noticed that movement was all or nothing. Whether I slightly pushed forward or pushed all the way forward, my character would run. With the Madcatz, movement was pressure-sensitive. With a slight push forward, I would walk. With it all the way forward, I would run.

Not sure if it's an issue with the controller, or I just didn't set-up the Logitech right.

How about your Square button?

I use square (well, the 360 equivalent) for active/passive. L1 for auto-run.

You can also map start for something. Maybe emote menu?

I don't like to have anything important on L3/R3 because I press them accidently at times. All mine do is reset the camera.

Sephrick, don't you just run off sometimes when if you hit R3 during battle? I suppose you are locked on so you wouldn't get far. Still, just running away accidently is a funny mental image.

In games like Call of Duty, I have a tendency to accidentally use the R3 function at the most in opportune times. Can't tell you how many times I've died because my character knifed thin air while I was quickly trying to aim.

In MMOs, though, I haven't had that problem. Though I do keep activating Active Mode accidentally. I played XI on PS2 from a while and had auto-run set to L1. Can't unlearn that no no matter how hard I try lol.

There's a guide around here somewhere on how to use the PS3 controller via USB and/or Bluetooth. Word of warning however, if you use the bluetooth method, the software is somewhat finicky with which adapters it'll work with. And if it does work, you cannot use that adapter for normal bluetooth functions.

I have two bluetooth adapters, one's too old. The other pairs initially and works, but if I turn it off or plug it into USB, it won't pair properly anymore.

When I hooked mine up the default settings were set up like the official link above. I didn't have to set anything.

The one thing that stops me from using a gamepad is target selection. Tabbing through everything is horrible!

Hidden features of a controller:

  • Emote button toggles AOE when targeting spells
  • Alt- and Ctrl-macros buttons switch tabs on item menus

  • I really really wish there was a PgUp/PgDown equivalent on the controller though...

are you already moving when you press it? auto-run does nothing if you aren't moving when you press it

Are you asking me? Yes, the left joystick pushed in does the trick.

I changed mine up from the default for some reason and now I'm used to it so I guess I'll keep it...though I'm using a 360-type controller I'll use the PS terminology

Triangle-Menu(Triangle is meant to be a menu button imo)
    X-Cancel
    Circle-Confirm
    Square-Passive/Active Mode
    Select-View Status Effects
    Start-Map
    L1/R1-Macros
    L2-Autorun
    R2-Emote/AoE
    L3-Lockon
    R3-Camera view

ok this is odd... No button config of any type will give me Auto-Run. I have clicked it and allowed up 5mins for lag to process the command... it is just not happening.

No one else has this problem? Everything else works fine, all the buttons do what they should, expect that one.

As was mentioned before, you have to start running and THEN press the autorun button. It doesn't make you run by itself. Start running, press the button and it will allow you to keep running. If it still doesn't work after you try that, then something is indeed wrong.

I personally put (Movement) L analog 'click' button to autowalk, and the (camera) R analog 'click' button to target lock/unlock. This seems a lot more natural than the beta site's suggested L1 for autowalk, they don't even seem to remember you can click analog sticks?.
