Does anyone know the location of this NPC in Gridania? It's for a leathercraft levequest.

I ran all over the place yesterday and no luck. I'm starting to think that this NPC doesn't exist but hopefully somebody can tell us otherwise.

In the end my synthing went

fail
fail
success
fail
fail
fail
fail
fail
fail
fail
fail
success
fail
fail
fail
fail

Or something, is synthing meant to be this unsuccessful? Even for a level 1 leve...

I've been wondering where that person is. When it comes to synthing, keep using either standard or rapid if you don't care about the quality of the synth. For synth quests that require you to just turn in finished items, don't worry about the quality. I couldn't find the NPC for the rank 1 quest so I was stuck doing the rank 5 or higher quests and those are hard. They give you materials to attempt making boots 3 times and they require 2 successful attempt to win the lev.

I did rapid synths everytime so I could just get a succesful synth to turn in and I failed 2/3 times for the mother's booties and then went 2/3 successful ones for the mocassins. There's a good synthing thread that was posted around a week and a half ago that explains all the details and strategies to doing a sucessful synth.
