Thoughts so far on the open betaFollow

Logged in for the first time yesterday and would like to share some feedback of my overall impressions of the game so far.

1. This game really needs a user-friendly tutorial (which you can opt in or opt out at the start) to teach you fundamental things in the game.

Logging in reminded me exactly of FFXI - it took me a while to work out where to go and what to do (let alone how). I can't imagine how newcomers must feel with such an unfriendly introduction.

E.g. once you hit your first level up, it should step you through how to assign your points, and once you learn a new skill, it should similarly provide a simple walk-through on how to equip them. Also, it wouldn't hurt to put quest markers indicating where to go (guild leves already point you in the right direction and maps are already fully revealed anyway).

2. Targeting mobs is really annoying.

When you're under pressure from adds, it doesn't help that the interface doesn't assist you with targeting them. I found I lost a lot of precious time fiddling around with the tab button and using my mouse cursor to select targets while getting beaten down - if we're expected to commonly defeat multiple mobs at once, this probably needs to be addressed.

3. Mob density feels like it's really low.

This one's probably been mentioned before, and hopefully it gets addressed on release - but currently it's a challenge to find anything decent to randomly exp/skill up on. Or it's a case of me not knowing where to find them!

Other than these considerations, playing the open beta really brought me and my wife back to the magic of the Final Fantasy world (something we haven't felt since FFXI), so for those who are on the fence on whether to play or not, it's shaping up (at least for us) as another awesome gaming title.

A little something I noticed for #1...when you're doing the starter quest, the NPC sends you to the 1st camp to do a leve, when you return they say something like this...

Reading the info at aetherytes tells you all about the stats and what they do, mentions elemental affinity too. Maybe they could better direct people to look for that info there, but it is there. The starter quest is much more of a tutorial than we ever got in XI, but I guess it could be a bit more new user-friendly.

No issue with the rest...for #3 there are some good spots to be found that are less crowded. But yeah, sometimes you're running around for far too long just looking for something to kill.

I agree with everything but #3, I just don't think that #3 is a problem right now.

But yes, on #1 I would love to see a nice tool-tip system. It's nice to be guided along a bit. There were some things like (death) that I had to figure out by trial and error on how to respawn. I mean, it took me like 1 min, but for someone new to the game or genre I see it being extremely frustrating.

I agree with #2. Once I switched over to keyboard only I figured out to use enter to select the first mob, but TAB always picks me, when I would want it to cycle on the mobs only.

Maybe it's lag that's contributing to this problem? In any case it needs to be fixed given the ability to take on multiple mobs at once.

Can't believe SE can't give the option to change graphics settings/resolution IN GAME , like every other PC game that's available. I realize that they mainly make console games, but it seems like they can't get the most basic PC game options implemented properly..(mouse control)

The biggest issue with beta right now is the lag which will be gone at launch so i'm not worried ^^
