Well let me start off by saying i like FF XIV so far, the graphics are amazing, characters animation's are top notch. i love walking through town and seeing all the little details, especially the markets because of all the vendors stands.. so much attention to detail.

But so far (yes i know this is beta and it could change) the spell animations are kind of lame. in FF XI when i casted stoneskin, i used to get so geeked while casting it and then the animation of stone spikes coming out of you and the sound it makes, especially with a sub woofer.. was awesome! in FF XIV its looks like a rectangle flat piece of rock and all the spells and actions make that same noise (chime) when you cast/ weapon skill/ attack.. its louder than the actual effect. for example when you cast fire you have to listen closely to hear the actual "fire" sound and even then its under whelming. i loved in ff xi casting spells such as ancient magic, utsusemi: ichi/Ni, blink ect.. every spell had so much charecter to them and they gave me goosebumbs on occasion. i havent casted a spell in FFXIV yet that came close to a goosebumb... yet anyways..

This is something i can look past but it just bothers me a bit to see SE go so far in detail of things and come up so short on spell animations and spell sounds. i would be satisfied if they just had a option to turn the "chime" or whatever you call it off when you cast a spell/action.

I know what you mean, when I played ffxi there was a certain satisfaction you would get when you cast something or use a tp ability. Abilities/spells just seem to fast paced now to be that special. I don't get the same feeling using bloodbath or skullsunder as I do using tachi:enpi with 300tp :/

I totally agree I noticed this as well when seeing Stoneskin casted as well. I was like wow thats it? lol It looked and sounded much better in XI which is sad since the rest of the game looks much better then XI but they seemed to have really skimped on the spell animations and sounds....

That said it remains to be seen what higher level spells look like but if you wanna compare certain spells like Stoneskin from XI and XIV then XI wins easily. And also noticed it with Fire as well.

And Agreed as well Utsusemi: Ichi and Ni were great animations and sounds.

I see this too. And I'm hoping its something they can update and add to over the course of the game.

What level are you? 10? Since when in FFXI did you even get stoneskin this early? For all you know there could be a stoneskin2 at higher ranks, and stoneskin 3 at even higher ranks.

People are jumping to conclusions from the first few levels when really, NO mmo has spectacular spells/abilities at the start, invcluding FFXI. I mean did you really get excited casting Thunder 1 on FFXI when you first got it? It was underwhelming to me there too, much like most low level spells.

I um actually did back in the day. I remember feeling big and tough with my lil Thunder I. I remember as my BF got his ancient magics I'd be all "WTF was that?!" Even now as I step up a tear I get all "OOOoooOO" and menacing laughter when I blow up stuff waaay lower then me ^^ I think i probably have too much fun on FFXI. But when you spend 10 Years dying you gotta spice it up being dumb and pretending to be mighty *^^*

Spells are lame in XIV. Reminds me of XIII where spells were basically tiny balls of color shooting at enemies.... its so pathetic.

yes i did get excited, it made a distinctive thunder sound, as so did all the low lvl spells, even stone 1 sounded like rocks hitting something, i think you may have missed the point of my OP.

I really hope they get bigger and louder as we progress as well, that feeling of being powerful is what I enjoyed most about XI. As others have said we can hope the upper lvl of the spells will be better or they just implement the "real" versions at launch.

I wish I could dig it up, I'll have to look around, but I'm pretty sure I recall there being an interview addressing this. The developers said that one of the challenges they ran into with FFXI was that the spells and abilities were so good up front, that it didn't leave them enough room to grow. So this time they planned on starting small so that by the time there is an established end game, the spells and abilities that are supposed to be epic will be seemingly more so by comparison.

Good to know! I like that idea.
