Xbox 360 Controller !!! OMGFollow

Was using my 360 wireless controller for ffxi and loved it... use it for Oblivion, and Dragon Age: Origins - never thought it'd work with FFxiv, let alone the beta - but, i stand and sit corrected! :)

it has changed my experience of this game 10x! no joke - my thinking, as has been mentioned in a few threads here and there... this game was designed for the ps3 and then remapped with the PC in mind for an early launch.

playing with the controller makes everything fun! jumping and running around foes as you fight, looking around... navigating menus - list goes on. especially targeting... that was a major issue for me... as was disengaging.

if you have a wireless or wired 360 (i'm sure the ps3 controller works too) - don't waste a moment - hook it up and see the difference.

anyone else had this epiphany!?
cheers.

I started right away with a controller cause I knew it was going to suck with the keyboard.

I've never enjoyed moving my character with keyboard buttons.

Yeah, using mine as well and so much better than the keyboard the way it is. I'm not really a console guy so it's new to me and working well.

I actually wanted to try my PS3 controller, cause the joystick layout is better for me, easier to scroll through abilities... but we use our PS3 for everything... network drive goes through it to the t.v., dvd's, etc. so every time i hit a button it screws up t.v. lol, so sticking with xbox till they map camera to the arrow keys :P

Yeah, the 360 controller is great. I'm using one now. I was using a PS2 controller hooked up to a USB converter before, and that's just as good. Dual analog gamepad = win for FFXI and FFXIV.

Using a wireless 360 controller requires a USB device called the Wireless Gaming Receiver -- they used to be sold separately, but I believe they are no longer produced as a separate product. You can buy them bundled with a new controller at places like Best Buy though. A wired controller can simply be plugged in and used.

I started using a 360 controller, but I wish my mouse was more responsive so I didn't have to. I don't like how I can't stay zoomed out with the controller. Also, I'd be interested to know what bindings other people are using. I like mine, but I'm sure there is room for improvement.

I conntected my PS3 controller wit its USB cable and in the gamepad config I chose it as the controller to use, but the lights on the controller keep blinking and its not letting me set the config buttons for it, it's doing nothing. I tried pressing buttons and clicking around in the gamepad config screen but nothing seems to be working...

You can auto-run on the keyboard, I think it's "r".

I agree about the gamepad as I recently picked up the logitech rumblepad2 and it's great. Lean back in the chair and start grinding :)

Yep yep. I use my xbox controller. I play every other mmo on the market with mouse keyboard, but I played FFXI for 5 years woth a controller. FFXIV is no different, way better playing with a controller. I dont care if it's a PC game, PC games arent mouse keybaord controls by default. Try and play NHL2011 with a mouse and keyboard. Or how about NBA live 2011. Some games are just meant to be played with controllers. This is one of them.

I completely agree! I tried the mouse and keyboard controls for all of 5 minutes before I ran down and grabbed my Xbox controller. I used it for 11 for so long, and I am really glad that we are able to map the controls so closely to those.

Yeah man lol, i also tried with mouse keyboard for a few minutes and then went and got my xbox controller. I actually when out and bought a new xbox controller just so it feels fresh and new for FFXIV lol.

But it's literally a night and say difference. WAY better. I dont see how people are so stubborn and unwilling to even try it. So many people are like "I BOUGHT A PC GAME I MUST PLAY WITH MOUSE KEYBOARD".

You really want to macro all that stuff though. Macro's + controller makes it so you very seldom have to go into your menus.

Hey quick question to you 360 controller users out there...

What do you do about the controller shutting off when left inactive for like, 5 minutes lol it's so annoying..

If i go make food or phone call or anything, I come back to my pc and the controller is off and I have to reboot the game etc lol is there a way around this?

i kinda like the keyboard...cuz its easier to use my skills then with the gamepad (1-10 keys)

i never use a mouse just use 0 to key through people (which does suck) but once you target one person you can go back to useing the arrow keys to move through them.

i am going to try out the gamepad once my server is back up. but...meh. i will use whatever at release. game pad one day keyboard another (i played ffxi like that too haha, course that was alot easier to use skills being there werent much to use...i was a tank...i use the same crap every day...haha)

I wanted to add there's some significant improvements to controller mechanics from FFXI. For instance, if you have your main hotbar cursor on like #7 then you pull right or left trigger and let go, it automatically puts your main bar cursor back to #1. This make so you can press attack super fast after using weaponskills and such. Basically on controller in FFXIV, you want to put all your most used skill on the far left of your hotbars. and the least used, and out of combat skills on the far right (sort of like PC mouse / keyobard setups).

Also in FFXIV, much like FFXI, up and down on the game pad will cycle through your group members. Makes healing an absolute BREEZE! People that have targetting issues in FFXIV obviously dont use a controller. Targetting with controller is by far superior in this game.

er wait... does the party name / player in ur party list highlight with an arrow or anything though so you know who you have targeted without looking at whats going on in the battle? I think that's what confused me... ffxi it was pretty much selecting from the party list down in the corner rather than the players on the screen

I have my PS3 controller hooked up. Works like a charm until I disconnect it after I have finished playing. Sometimes I have to re-enter all the settings. It takes all of 2mins so its just a minor inconvenience.

This is my Layout:
Quote:
Menu
D-Pad

Movement
Left Control Stick

Camera
Right Control Stick

Emote List
Triangle

Cancel
Circle

Confirm
X

Menu
Square

Auto Run
L1

Open Macros (Ctrl)
L2

Target Lock
L3

Passive/Active
R1

Open Marcos (Alt)
R2

Change View
R3

Map
Start

Status Effects
Select

Since changing from keyboard + mouse to the controller, I am able to control my character far greater than with the keyboard + mouse combo.

Np, you can also go left and right respectively to target everything else. Like if there's 2 mobs in front of you, one in your left and the other on your right, if you press left on the direction pad it will guarentee that you target the one on the left. You can also go back and forth if you over shoot a target, unlike tab targetting (which sucks monkey ballz).

As far as I know it doesnt. I was just looking at my target box though. I assume they will add a cursor showing who you have targeted on the health bars as well. But no, I dont think it shows currently.

I think most people that DO give controller a chance for this game will be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately too many stubborn people out there that refuse to adjust to something different.

The only reason there's so many wow clones out there is because there's so many wowtards lol.

There's one question that comes to mind: Since are on a list of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 etc, how do you quickly pick say, your Raging Strike ability on button 8?

You either have a keyboard next to you or you scroll through the actions using the analog stick - which isn't too bad actualy, I do that anyway using a keyboard but all comes down to preference.

By the way guys, there's a player written patch that makes the mouse a hardware mouse and it works great. It's literally a game changer for mouse keyboard controls. although i still prefer the controller, it would be great for those that want to use mouse keyboard badly.

I recommend it even to those that dont use mouse keyboard, it just makes menu navigating a breeze!

Here is the link, I confirm it works like a dream. Absolutely ZERO mouse lag after using this patch.

Really? I'm a pretty serious gamer, which is why hearing you guys say that using a controller optimizes your game intrigued me. But choosing abilities sounds slow. Would you say it's significantly slower than using the 1-9 buttons on a keyboard? I don't wanna sit with control devices in my lap I think.

Sorry for these very specific questions, would just like to know it before I purchase an xbox controller.

I would say it's obviously slower than pecking a button on the keyboard (which you can still do if you want, since you will still have the keyboard right there for chat), but it scrolling through actions on the bar with the Dpad is fast enough for an MMORPG of this nature.
You'd be surprised at how many people in FFXI were using a gamepad all these years for the exact same functions.

If you're using a wireless 360 with a play and charge kit you're sol, that only transfers power with the newer controllers. You need a super old one for it to connect. Of course, microsoft has a solution that you can pay for in the form of a wireless controller adapter for the pc. Check amazon for it.
If you're wired i dont know what to tell you though.

yeah i played FFXI for 5 years with xbox controller. This games pace doesnt require you to be "The Flash" with your skills. It just requires more thinking and better judgment on what skills to use and when.

But the time you are saving by using keys 1-0 on a keyboard are mere miliseconds, it's really no big deal (unless you really suck badly with a controller). Trust me, if you give controller a chance and get used to it, you'll like it more. The game was built on playing with a controller.

I even have the xbox mini keyboard mounted on my controller to make things really simple. I can just kick back in my lazy boy chair and play FF and not have a big clunky keyboard on my lap. It's great.

Sh*t outta luck my friend.
Assuming you're using a wireless plugged in with this:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360playchargekit/

To remedy the problem, procure yourself one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2

You can check your local Gstop or wherever you shop but from what i hear brick and mortar stores stopped carrying these for the most part. Amazon is your best bet i believe. I got one from there and received it within the week

Microsoft changed the way the plug in the controller works because of errors with one of the old headsets years ago, so if you have a super super old 360 controller, theoretically the play n' charger kit would work, but for all of the new ones its toast.
