wow so far it seems crafting is way overly complicated oy. I know the way they have it makes it more realistic and all but its so hard! SO get this, all i want to make is a great axe to upgrade myself from the starter one. It has like 5 different parts, most of the parts are all different crafts themselves, alchemy, woodworking, goldsmithing ect. and then theres the crystal thing. most of them require crystals to make, then their base ingrediant requires crystals. and i need like 16 shards to make one crystal @_@ crystals dont drop that often. The ingrediants for the parts come from different places all over the world apparently. so i got some traveling to do since i dont have the money to just mass buy ingrediants and hopefully eventually make a great axe. OY, it just seems like a lot of work for one low level weapon! cry. Anyone else feel this way about crafting?

I'll be leveling crafting by use of leves almost exclusively. It will be slower sure, however...

- You get free materials

- If you have enough crystals or shards to do the synth, it doesn't use them up. So if it required 6 earth shards, as long as I had at least 6 in my possession it won't use them up and I can do the synth. Successful synth or not!

- You get great XP

- You get gil and items, which you can keep or sell for even more gil

- They give you extra materials to do the synths. Say you are to make 2 things and have material for 3. You can make the first 2 and complete the leve, and then use the last material for a third synth. It's not a requirement but you still get xp for it.

- Totally free!

You can have 0 of the required shard and still do the guildleve synth.

All of the local levequests for crafting that I've seen provide the mats/shards/crystals for you to use (and they don't even take up inventory space). The only catch is that sometimes you have to go to another NPC after accepting the levequest in order to get the mats. I've got several in my log right now that involve trips to here or there to get the mats, but it's still pretty darn convenient.

Edit: And I'm not 100% on this, but with regards to them giving you more mats than you need, I think that when you create an extra item you get to keep it. So normally, if you've got a quest that requires you to make 3 of <x> item, you get enough mats to make 4 and if you succeed in all of your attempts, you get to keep the extra. I believe that's how I got my current ring, but I could be mistaken. Truth be told, I always seem to blow up the extra mats somewhere along the line so I can't say from repeat experience.

Ah cool didn't know about the crystals/shards not being required either.

Hmmm I will have to watch and see if the keeping the extra item you make is true, I wasn't paying attention to that in my inventory.

You'll get a small amount of class xp and no physical xp then. Also if you fail the leve obviously you won't be getting any rewards.

I actually like the crafting system, except the part it doesnt record the recipes u learn somewhere. The reason i like it is because it involves everyone in the community, unless your super socialized and suck at crafting. However i am worried about the crafting for the first month or so when everything is too hard to get.

That would be an interesting use for that journal of ours...when you learn a new recipe through guildleves or if in retail some NPCs tell you recipes it goes straight to your recipe book section of the journal.

You get one extra synth of mats when doing a guild leve (so if they need 3, you get enough for 4 tries). If you fail or succeed, you never see the item in question, so no, you don't keep the extra. The extra goes into the 'reward quality' layer. Basically, you get x quality points (actual quality divided by the # wanted) towards the quest. At the end of the quest, extra rewards besides what's listed as payment is based on this quality level.

You'll also get a recipe as a reward. May I recommend you grab a piece of paper and WRITE THIS DOWN. You do NOT get a recipe book. You have to know what you're shoving in before you see the 'recipes possible' list.

Crafting isn't overly complicated. The simple method:
Start with rapid. If you're hitting that easy enough go to standard. If that's good, go to a few bolds then finish off with standard/rapid if/when you're at or less then 40 durability.

Durability is king.

Quality will affect xp per crafting. 200 quality or 50 quality will give different xp results when grinding.

the physical XP earned, once you've done it a bit, will help you figure out if you're REALLY reaching to finish a craft off.

Each of the guilds (and the facilities at camps) can give you +'s to your craft. I'm pretty sure it's a +1/2/3 bonus (common, journeyman, master) that you get for 100/200/500 at the guilds, and +1 (common) at the camps for 200. Well worth it if you're stretching and barely making it.

That's what I like about the craft leves, you get two recipes. The first is for the item you're making (write down what the ingredients are), and the second recipe when you succeed. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the reward recipe is like the next item that is easy to craft at your level in order to gain more exp for the next level.

Want to make an addition to this. You won't always be using your guild's facilities. I believe you can use the other guild's facilities to help you level. Some recipes suggest that you have a certain knowledge to help create said item. For example, for goldsmithing, ores to ingots suggest smelting knowledge and and bone rings suggest for some kind of bone knowledge which I think you can get from the leathercrafters (not 100% for the bone rings as i cannot confirm atm).
