I'm looking to try to use my PS3 controller to play this game. Anybody know how to accomplish this?

Check out http://www.motioninjoy.com/ for your ps3 controller on PC needs. Be sure to have a bluetooth dongle ready to get this stuff setup

Ahh, you can. Should have made that clear too, i though you were wanting the full wireless aspect of it. Just be sure to have a USB to Mini usb cord that will reach far enough then and you should be fine! Thats much easier to set up than bluetooth too

It doesn't matter if you don't have a bluetooth dongle laying about. I am using my PS3 controller with a usb cable. The only annoying thing is if you are running Vista or 7 64bit, you have to boot into a debug mode to make use of the controller.

boot into a debug mode... eh, I would be using 7 64bit. I'm not completely tech savvy, but I'm not computer illiterate either. I don't think I've entered debug mode before. I can prolly figure it out, but I just got back from a long weekend with the lady friend and I'm too exhausted to figure this out right now lol. Maybe in the morning. Thanks for the feedback, I'll try tomorrow.

Sidenote: are the servers down or is my PC failing me for the beta? I'm getting a:
"13001 The lobby server connection has encountered an error.
Error Code: 1015
Status: 0"

Never seen this before. It was working just fine on Thursday night... this is at the character select screen by the way.

Yeah, im getting that as well. Servers are down at the moment
The motioninjoy software and website both have guides to help you boot into debug or sign the files, whichever you decide to do.

Hmmm... well since the servers are down, maybe I'll play around with this ps3 controller or just go to bed and save it all for tomorrow. Thanks, I really appreciate the help. Do you know how long the servers have been down/when they're expected to go back up?

You can save your self a lot of hassle and just get a USB -> PlayStation 2 Adapter and use an old PS2 controller. Not like you need all the extra stuff on the PS3 controller anyway. (like the analogue triggers for example)

Except that may not work. I have a post about using one of these a bit down the page, the config program sees the controllers, but you cannot map anything.

Since I set up my 360 controller life has become so much easier. I can only imagine using a PS3 controller would be just as good.

The only issue I have is that I cannot feel the rumble. I'm not sure if tis is because I have it connected to my USB port for power instead of batteries or something else.

Also, server down. :(

I recommend the 360 for ease of use, Its just plug and play if you buy a corded one! None of this ps3 controller hassle. Wireless would require a 20 dollar controller to pc adapter from amazon. If you already have a 360 controller, getting the adapter would be about the same price as a corded controller.
Also, the "Play and charge" usb connector does not work for actually connecting the controller to the pc. Learned that the hard way...
Adapter:

Edit:
Random question, whats the image embed code for these forums??

I went to that website above and got my ps3 dual shock working with my pc and ffxiv. Just plugged it into the usb slot. Make sure you go to the wiki link for the latest install instructions.

/Shrug Mine works fine. I spend alot of time trying to get PS3 controller to work on Windows 7 64 bit. It was too much of a hassle.

USB > PS2 adapter for a PS2 controller is working just fine for me as well.

Personally i like the PS3 setup for ffxi and the 360 for any fps if i want to be lazy and not use the kb/mouse for them. Ps3 seems more natural for a FF title. The mouse is almost essential when crafting if you have a large inventory though, the craft window and selling things to npcs still has a pretty bad lag, for me at least. The little scroll bar on the side and a mouse is a godsend.

Hmm, maybe it's the brand. Mines from Mayflash, sometimes called Tiger Games. Super JoyBox 5 Pro.

got mine at radio shack a few years ago. No clue what brand it is, not really much for markings on it.

I might have to buy a USB PS2 adapter just so I don't have to leave my computer in the debug/developer mode.

This is the 4 port they make, I used to have the 2 port that they had well before Radio Shack even sold the ones they have. It's odd because it works with anything else that supports a gamepad, emulators, other games, I could even play Borderlands with it if I wanted (Ugh, never). I've only found two other posts via google with the same issue. One was unresolved, the other said recalibrating fixed it. Tried, but no go.

Even tried their drivers instead of the native windows 7 drivers..

Bummer, an XBOX controller or a made for PC controller like a Logitec game pad (the D pad on the one I have is HORRIBLE tho) might be your best bet.

I'd never seriously play the game with one, it would only be for lazy mode. I could never play a game that uses a first/third person interface without a keyboard/mouse. It's just I don't like when things don't work like they should, bugs the **** out of me.

I played FFXI with only a controller and used the keyboard just for chat. I plan to do the same with FFXIV. Tho, if they had WoW like keyboard and mouse controls, I might seriously consider using keyboard and mouse. But, I just don't see that happening. Its SE, all they know is controller.

As for as movement goes, it's really about the same. Aside from the software mouse being craptacular. Even the highly nested menus wouldn't bother me with a hardware mouse option, and getting rid of the interface lag.

Also having a G19 and being able to map keyboard commands to my mouse's extra buttons is just too useful.

Oh, uhm wow...

Apparently someone looked into the files for the game, specifcally ffxivgame.exe and found that there is indeed a hardware mouse option. Just hidden and disabled. He wrote a patch for it, which I tried. I won't link the post here unless I know i'm allowed to. But even though all I can get to is the white start screen before the lobby, but the difference is night and day. AKA it works.

I just tried playing open beta using my ps3 controller. Surprisingly, I played better with mouse/keyboard setup. I'm glad folks prefer keyboard/controller setup but playing so many PC mmos since FFXI, keyboard/mouse comes naturally to me. Even though, FFXIV's kb/mouse mechanics isn't your traditional configuration.

My two cents.... Game on!!

If talk of the utorrent update method is allowed here im sure hardware mouse fixes should be as well. And im also sure that everyone wants to try that out now too, haha
