How to check server statusFollow

#1 Sep 06 2010 at 1:20 AM Rating: Good
Does anyone know how to check the server status? Like what the DNS names or IPs are for the servers to ping them, or how these web based server status indicators work?

I'm wanting to write a quick little tool to run on my PC that checks the status and emails me when it changes. Mainly so I can be notified when the server(s) are back up.

Actually, i think wint mentioned something about their ips a while back, maybe he knows

There's a little clicky at the top of this site here called Server Status.
#4 Sep 06 2010 at 1:24 AM Rating: Default
I know how to check the link at the top. Please understand what I'm asking for is how to check it on my own. Without visiting some website. So I can write a small script to notify my when the servers are back up. So I don't have to check manual.

I've tried servername.ffxiv.com and that does not seem to work. lobby01.ffxiv.com is the hostname of one of the lobby servers so I figured servers might be same, but nope.

Heres another site:
http://www.ff14news.com/serverstatus/
Out of the 3 sites we have, do you think we could check the sources and find what ips they are using to check?

I would just make a shortcut link to the site that Dagger mentioned (above)Thats the one I use for fast reference (only two left mouse clicks). However if you are hiding the fact that you are checking the game's server status from someone ( I would probably 1)not use that particular pc to search for such info or 2)learn to use Minimize window and History delete. And if you want to be real technical about it all theres always reformatting. :o)

I've checked source code. All of the sites are running this on the back end. The only thing you can see is the HTML that draws the status. You can't see any code behind what is actually running the ping, or server check.

I'm sorry, I don't understand this reply. What is wrong with trying to check the server status my self in a similar manner to the way these sites are doing it? I'm not trying to be secret or hide anything.

Please read my post, I'm wanting my computer, to check via a script I will create and email me when its up. I don't want to check a site manually.

I just need to know if anyone knows if the servers are pingable or what their IPS / hostnames are. If they are not pingable what port they listen for connections on from the client. Or lastly if anyone knows how these sites are checking the server status. Perhaps they are not even doing it the way I think they might be. Maybe they are just referencing some other master status on another website.

Yeah, i just looked at them as well, only HTML.
Well since we have a server status on here perhaps wint or pikko would be able to provide the ip address that it uses? These 3 sites are the only ones i'v seen showing server status, so i dont know where the master server list that they are referencing would be

Just checked the ff14news forums, their admin is keeping the code on a linux box and wants it to remain a secret, even though everyone and their goldfish has a server status page now, except the end user.
I guess we could just wait for the servers to be back online and do a netstat while connected to the game and get the server ip that way. I dont know how to log the ips that were connected though, so you'd have to get the timing down right to get the lobby and login servers.

Ya, its obviously not a huge secret since several sites are doing it.

That was my next step was to check it when the game was back up and see what IPs its talking to. My only fear is that once the servers are back up... I'll want to log into the game and not work on this! lol

Got bored tonight and figured it would be a cool tool to have.

Well here's my findings, im not too sure if they are correct though. Gotta wait until they go down and try some pinging.
Login: 219.117.154.110
Lobby: 202.67.50.8
Lindblum: 202.67.48.238
Alliteration : l.o.l.!
Once again, im not sure these are correct, but thers an 87% chance.

Everyone, let us know your server ip addresses!
With the game running:
Start>run>cmd>netstat
Look for an ip that that starts with 202.
Share your findings here!

PS, yes that means the servers are up and im logged in

I'm currently working on filtering through some wireshark traces. I have to make more characters on some different servers still too to get all the IPs.

If / when I figure this out I'll share. If anyone knows how to do this already, please share. I'll figure it out eventually and WILL share the info with the public but it sure would be nice if someone who already did all the leg work could help out :-)

A must have program for anyone using Windows. Same goes for Process Explorer and Autoruns.

I think I've got it figured out. You just do simple connection checks on the IP and port and see if it responds. If it does, its up, if it does not, its down.

The only thing I've been told by someone who made one of the websites that shows server status, is that the lobby server can be tricky. That sometimes it responds when its down. So I'm not really sure how to handle that, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens next time its down.

For those interested I'm Using Zabbix http://www.zabbix.com to do the monitoring and send the emails. It's an open source enterprise monitoring tool. A bit of overkill for this, but its what I use at work.

I get emails when a server goes down and comes back up now! Woot! (pending validation when the servers go down again ;-p)
