Coerthas, The Black Shroud, La Noscea, Thanalan and Mor Dhona. (Not counting the cities.) However, these areas are huge. One area in FFXIV is about four times the size of an area in FFXI. I wonder how much variation there is within one area. Is it really one area, or is there actual variation? Is it Ronfaure+Ronfaure+Ronfaure+Orc's Camp / or / Ronfaure+Orc's Camp+La Theine+Valkurm Dunes? I hope the latter, otherwise the areas will be quite dull and repetitive. If it is the latter, I don't see why they felt the need to create these HUGE maps. It's quite confusing and annoying, especially with those impossible-to-read fonts.

Its more like the former but imo there's enough variation to keep you interested and honestly with me just in awe all the time - In Ul'Dah it looks similar all around but I've hit a swamp, a canyon, many caves (most looks similar, some varied in shape and size), tunneling mountains, I've been to a mine similar in creepiness to gusgen in XI (I'll spare you the details, its fun when you see what's inside on your own)...there's plenty of variety in one location, and it looks beautiful. I've been playing since closed beta and I haven't explore one entire area yet, that's how big they are.

From what I can tell, a lot of this is just filled space; there's not much special going on save for different mobs. I hope I'm wrong, but it feels like a giant bubble.

If you look on the map of Black Brush(area right outside Uldah) north of Camp Black Brush there's a place called Nanawa Mines. I went in there today, pretty cool looking, nice seamless entry into the mines. Couldn't fight anything though, there was a bunch of those spider lookin' things that were red and aggrod. Of course I was playing on a rank 2 Thaumaturge.

There's still tons of invisible walls in the game, I'm pretty sure there are area's we still can't access. Also I've seen lots of cities which have been blocked off for sure...

And well, the patch notes did only say "2 new city states and their surrounding areas have been added"

As for the overall size of the world, I think we're only going to get to alot of it via the main storyline.

I think what we see now is probably ~30% of the game's content. In alpha(I think?) SE said that the current game world was about 10% of the final product, so x3 for the added city states should be a good rough estimate.

Have you tried to see if there are any tunnels nearby that lead you there? In La Noscea theres not only a cpuple of easily noticeable tunnels, but also an entire underground accessed not far from Camp Bloodshed(sp?) and the wine-making town.

Ah, it's too bad one area really is one area (thus not any major differences). I don't have any problem with the total amount of areas in the game, but with the size of single areas. If an area is huge and without any major variations it becomes quite dull for me (though landmarks like swamps and lakes are very nice). I didn't get a chance to explore the rest of Ul'dah's surrounding areas yet, but if you've pretty seen it all by stepping out of Ul'dah, I can't say I'm very excited to do so...

Well one of them is this castle:

The gate is locked and the NPC says you can't enter but the map shows a long path leading to it.

Another is this creepy area I found, the whole map sort of centered around a huge fortress, ufnortunately I couldn't go further without dying from aggro, but you can sort of make out the big building

The music in this area is really freaky too...

That castle is Ishgard (spelling?) and I think it's absolutely stunning, isn't it? In my opinion the best looking area in FFXI and FFXIV combined. It's supposedly the new Jeuno.

One thing I love is the way it looks when you can see the cities from a distance. I was up on a cliff near Camp Black Brush and saw Uldah from a ways and it looked awesome.

I just got into the beta yesterday and focused on learning the game mechanics more then anything. I noticed when trying out the teleport system that the main areas, The Black Shroud, La Noscea, Thanalan and Mor Dhona get sub areas added to them as you reach each camp.so I think this world will have a much bigger area then FFXI but my feel smaller because its seamless.

Around Ul'Dah, there are 5 huge areas, Central Thanalan, Northern T, Southern T, Western T, Eastern T. Each zone has a camp with leves, there is one known cave, (the mines), and there are a few places spread across the map that look like aethyrite, which I assume are instance portals. This is just around Ul'Dah. It takes quite a while to walk to these other areas.

In Closed Beta we didn't really have a clue how big it would be, and open beta has just given us 4 more areas - two city states, Ishgard and the evil aggro **** of Mor Dhona. I think they're saving a lot until retail so it's fresh for everyone.

If you check the main map that SE released and the storyline on the website, there are clearly quite a few more areas outlined and at least 2 more cities.

Then of course you have the Empire to the North East that might be in an expansion or might be endgame area.

Loads of areas to be implemented I reckon. I think structure of Open Beta is near what it'll be in retail apart from lag and economy, but we're probably only seeing about 40% of the true 'content'

Yeah like someone said there is a huge castle in The Coerthas area. It's blocked right now. Probably won't open until release or it quest based(?) Like how you couldn't access Lufaise Meadows in Chains of Promathia. Who knows.

That isn't a fortress, that's a crashed Garlean airship with a dead dragon wrapped around it, in the middle of a lake:

The zones are incredibly huge and beautiful. I like that in some zones it actually feels like a relief to make it to camp. :D

I keep finding random caves around Ul'Dah as well. Most are just caves but a lot are tunnels that lead to other parts of the map.

Are you talking about the Aetherial Gates?

Quote:
Aetherial gates are rifts in the planet causing a stable discharge of gaseous aether. These can be accessed via nearby aetheryte deposits and vice versa, making transport to outlying areas quicker and more convenient. As with other forms of teleportation, however, accessing the Aetherial gates will require sufficient anima.

They look like blue "pillars" on the map, and up close look just like Aetherial Nodes. They are like Aetheryte but with less options.

open beta only has 1 area for each city open..

If you look on the Gridania city map, go all north and you'll see "Lily hills" but if you go there and try to go out of town to that area, you'll just be told you can proceed any further.. So the retail version of the game will have alot more areas you can go into from the towns. All left on the Gridania map you'll see "Lotus gardens", you cant go into that area either.

In Limsa Lominsa upper decks, all north is "Northern islands" cant go into it, all south, you will see "Southern islands" and guess what... you cant go into it. only in lower decks can you go out of town thru "Zephyr gate".. Now maybe northern islands and southern islands would put you into a different area of the area we can go into now but I'm kinda guessing it wont. I dont know tho.

In Ul'dah, just south of the aetheryte plaza on left side of map, you'll see "The Dunes".. havent checked that out but guessing you "cant proceed any further" there either.

Looks like alot of areas are closed off even tho it's "open beta".

Regardless if these exits from the towns lead to the same area we are roaming thru now or not is anyone's guess. I doubt they would name areas one thing and an exit from town a different name but yet leads to the same area. Dont see it.

We have access to 1 area from each town only and not all areas.

dunes is the retainer area, name doesn't fit I know. Also isn't there supposed to be a 4th city? SE said it was going to be 21GB at release (15 of that on cd) mine in my programs folder is only about 9gb right now (if that's even the place to look)

Probably a hub type city like Jeuno was.

I've spent the past few days exploring and here's my main observation: the areas themselves are rather homogeneous in terms of terrain (examples: the entire area surrounding Grindia is foresty) but some of them have some neat and really different looking dungeons-- quite dangerous all in all, but you can find them by looking for a name with a downward arrow icon on a map.

It is kind of sad how beautiful the environment is, but being virtually unable to interact with it in any meaningful way. It's kind of like visiting an art museum. There's lots to look at, but not much to actually do.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I'm content with running around and whoopin a$$ on monsters, occasionally finding a treasure chest or an NPC. Most MMO worlds don't have that much interaction other than mobs. Champions Online was the only one I played that really had more, as you could pick up objects and throw them at enemies.

I did find an area in Gridana that is open. Follow the road West past Camp Emerald. It appears to dead end in a small valley but actually takes you to another huge area. I forget the name, it was "Lower something.."

It looks like the 4th city may be in Coerthas (get there through The Black Shroud). I found a lot of high level mobs, including some camps. About the central north area is a large gate with guards that say you can't pass. I've seen in the distance what looks to be like some sort of city.

As far as other areas go, I've found multiple places that you can't interact with yet, including what looks like port town, and possibly some ferry/airship platforms. I'm guessing that this will definitely make it easier to travel from one side of a map to another.
