Ok, well, got my poor computer all fixed up from yesterday and am back playing and adventuring on my little fox girl (shut up, she's a fox, not a cat) and I noticed something...

Players are very silent. At first I thought this was a good thing. I've played WoW for 4 years, and let me tell you, seeing the "****" jokes and racist comments in chat channels all day is not my idea of a good time. It's disgusting and makes you really not want to play the game, but here, it's like the polar opposite. Everyone seems to be sooooo quiet!

Has anyone else noticed that eerie silence? I suppose it's all well if everyone is just too busy having a great time to chat, but it's kind of lonely out there.

Also... how do I begin crafting for alchemy? :( I am in Lima Lominssa (Sp?) and can't figure out how to begin crafting! :'( I need to make that animal glue.... lol

Go to Zuzudesu in East Hawkers' Alley and pick up a Weathered Alembic & Bronze Mortar. Then go see T'mokkri in the Drowning Wench for alchemy guildleves. That should give you a good start at alchemy.

I see a good deal of conversation around the nodes or the adventurer's guild on Besaid. The nice thing about FFXI and FFXIV is when someone shouts a message you only see it if you are within a certain range. I like the fact that there are not "channels" for the city where you see every conversation throughout the whole gigantic area. It keeps the spam limited without having to adjust chat filters.

I'm going to use ZAM's very own proto-meme here, although for once it is truly 100% applicable. It's only a beta. Generally people join a beta for one of two reasons: they genuinely want to buckle down and sniff out bugs for the developers, or they want an early look at the game before it comes out - either because they want a leg up, or to see if they want to actually buy it, or for one of several other reasons. But whatever the reason, in the back of everyone's minds is the fact that the data will all be deleted in a few weeks and it doesn't really matter. Whatever your reason for being in the beta, building a community isn't as primary in your thoughts as it will be in the actual release.

That being said, a good number of people in the beta and most likely the game, are going to be immigrants from FFXI. I may be wrong here, but given that you sighted WoW and not FFXI, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably did not play the latter. FFXI had it's fair share of... well... ********, but it was a much quieter community than WoW in general. Shouts tended to be business only, with a few friendly conversations cropping up from time to time (Your experience may vary, I'll admit, I've heard some stories that make me believe Siren may have been a little tamer than other servers).

Don't let that fool you though, the people playing are all very warm and friendly, they just aren't going to be interacting on the general chat level as much as you are familiar with.

Most of the people talking on Gyashi are speaking Japanese. One time I tried to respond to a shout, but it wouldn't let me (nothing happened when I hit enter after typing) until I logged out and logged back in.
