Playing both, how feasible is it?Follow

So the open beta has been out close to a week, I realize it's not full content right now, but we do have an idea of how much time we can spend in this game. So how many of you are planning to play both FFXI and XIV? Have some of you decided now that there's no way in **** you can handle both? Or have some changed their minds and decided, I think doing both might work?

The more I play XIV, the more I'm interested in picking it up from the start and wanting to stray away from XI, but recently, XI has actually become quite fun with all their updates, and getting things done that you couldn't before has never been easier. That being said, you still need to sink in a lot of time leveling jobs up to the new cap, along with subs and doing whatever else needs to be done.

Since the first month of XIV is free, I might keep my account active for XI, especially if I can get it for half price, but I wonder how well I'll be able to manage both as updates keep coming for both games.

I do agree, that being on pace with everyone else from the start has its benefits. It's nice to start a new game... I plan on playing FFXIV exclusively, but I did quite FFXI about two years ago. It's kind of like an old friend.

In my opinion (and this is just mine), it probably will not be possible for anyone who has school or a job. SE is trying to make it so that XIV does not require a huge time commitment, which is great, but XI still does and always will require a huge devotion of time. I think that some people will be able to pull it off (maybe by doing XIV on weeknights and XI on weekends when they have larger chunks of time), but the majority of people will have to choose one or the other.

As a side note, SE has foreseen this problem as well and have been making some very intelligent steps towards keeping XI alive and strong. Reducing the monthly fee, loads of new content, special in-game items for having both active - all great moves on their part. It's just a question of how many people can pull it off.

Right now I do this:

Test around in XIV do my stuff, when all is said in done I then:

Log into FFXI and do scheduled events.

So I play FFXI for events and FFXIV when I want to just relax with folks.

What Im doing is playing around in beta when Im am not at work, and playing ffxi while at work during downtime on my laptop. Since I dont do events on ffxi im kinda in the twilight of career there. I will stick around to hit 99 on all the jobs that I am currently at 80 (see sig). Then I think I will hang it up for good.

I can already foresee ffxiv being more than enough to keep me busy and happy and once its running mostly smoothly and has a few years under its belt it will no doubt be that much more entertaining.

I have a full time job, a 2 year old son and a wife who works 80+ hours a week as a doctor, meaning I'm on kid duty most of the time. I plan on playing both.

Neither game really requires more time commitment than you are willing to give. If you join a linkshell that requires you to be around every day for 5-6 hours at a time, that's your problem. I have had no problems playing FFXI in a more relaxed manner. It has become easier and easier to play it at a more casual pace. But if you feel like you have to obtain every piece of gear, max every job/class, etc - then yes, you probablly shouldn't play both games (or attempt to have a real life). If you want to play a couple hours of FFXIV here and a couple hours of FFXI there, I don't see why you can't.

Maybe you are scared of the old argument it can take hours to find a party in XI. While I never had a problem finding or forming parties quickly (I have taken every job in the game to 75 or higher), some people did. But with Abyssea, this really is a non-issue. I have not had to spend more than 10 minutes getting an abyssea xp group on ANY job. I play as long as I want, when I'm done, I just tell the party I'm done. The party is 18 people, so when one person leaves it doesn't bring the party to a screeching halt. They just keep going an invite the next person as they appear.
