Has anyone else been experiencing this? :x More specifically, a sharp pain in one (or both) eye(s) occurring occasionally. I've only played the game for maybe 3 hours a day in one-hour intervals and started OB on Friday (couldn't get in all Saturday), so I doubt it'd be because I'm starting at a screen in the dark for too long -- and even that I've done many times in the past, and it's never bothered me. It just happened to occur when I started XIV -- maybe the effects of Glare haven't worn off?? (lol)

So, I figured I'd just ask ZAM if they've experienced anything similar. My apologies if this comes off as a joke post; I'm actually quite serious, for better or worse... >.> Oh, and, no, I did not have any staring contests with the sun before playing. :P Heheh.

This is to be expected when a game is running as 'chuggy' as ffxiv is recently, what with the low server speed limit. Your eyes are having to twitch around every second to 'catch up' to the image again, this causes eye muscle strain in the long run. Turn on more lights in your room, most importantly hitting wall behind your screen, and don't sit so close.

Also try to lower some graphic quality settings and see if you cant get it running a little more smoothly.

Only you can prevent eyeball fires.

See if it happens in full screen mode, and instead of turning more lights on in your room, you can instead turn the brightness or better yet, the backlight down on your screen.

Well the cumulative effects of playing the games in the dark may have finally caught up with you. If you don't mind me asking when was your last appointment at a ophthalmologist. I have three possible solutions for you 1. You now require glasses. 2. You may have developed an eye strain which is common when you eye is forced to look at a bright object that is against a dark object. This causes you eye to constantly try to re-adjust for the varying contrasts. Which requires your eye muscles to tighten and flex cause them to suffer minor damage and become strained. 3. You may not be blinking enough it is quite common for gamers to forget to blink, I don't understand the exact cause of it but I do remember reading a study about it. This causes your eyes to dry and become irritated which results in pain.

If it is this problem I recommend no longer playing in the dark. Take regular 15 minute breaks and stare at something else other than the computer screen (This doesn't mean T.V) make concentrated efforts at blinking more often, also if your pain is caused by dryness I recommend purchasing some Visine or similar products to help keep the eyes moist.

One last note if this condition persists go see a doctor. I'm not one, though I do work in health care. Just trying to give you some information to what might be causing the pain. I hope this helps and I really hope your eyes feel better so you can fully enjoy this game.

Edit Note: Just saw you posted that you may have pain in one eye, this could be caused by a stigmatism which is cause by one eye being unfocused and your other eye straining to compensate for the weaker eye.

Thanks for all the varied responses, guys. Just another shining example of the kindness and helpfulness of ZAM. :)

I'll pray that it's just as a result of playing in the dark with XIV's chuggy animation (my GPU is very low-performance, so this symptom makes perfect sense -- I'm rubber-banding a LOT), and that it's not a stigmatism. If it's any consolation (for myself, haha), the symptom has lessened in effect since the day it started (Sunday), so that must be a good thing. I'll try taking a break from XIV for a while, see how it goes; and if I do end up playing again, I'll be sure to sit a good distance away and have as many lights on as possible...while blinking furiously. >_> Oh, and just to add: I do wear glasses. Maybe I need a new pair? I've had these since I was 14...and I'm turning 20 this year. @_@

This happens to me and is hurting my eyes. When you are running and you have the zoom closer into the character, there is this constant up and down shaking as you run over certain terrain. I really hope they can fix this soon its driving me nuts.

Something to consider, are glasses from http://www.gunnars.com/products. They can be pricey, but in the spirit of eye care, alot cheaper than having to go to the optometrist and getting prescriptions. It may not just be FFXIV, but just long-term exposure to your game monitor. Just tossing out yet another idea.

I do not remember the exact technical term for it, but it's commong. Monitor's use something called a refresh rate (as do all games), which cause your eye to not blink, in keeping sync with the images on screen. Every 10 minutes or so, close your eyes for a few seconds, then open them and focus on something far away. It will do wonders for your eye strain.

Uh.. you shld get your eyes examined every 2 years. 6 years is a pretty long time for the same prescription.

Oh, awesome. Those glasses look very stylish and are surprisingly affordable. O_O I might...have to buy several of these...! Thanks so much for referring me to them; I just wish I could try them on before I invest in them...

Oh, I had my eyes examined sometime last year, and as far as I remember, nothing had changed. I just didn't want to spend the money on new glasses.

Well, I wouldn't really call $80 surprisingly affordable (for their cheapest pair!), but if they really do help reduce eye strain it may be worth the investment.

don't sit in the dark staring at a bright screen. keep a lamp on while you play. also, stretch your ocular focus muscles: look down a hallway or out a window for a few minutes.

i experience eye pain often, especially when gaming or reading. try out those suggestions!

I was skeptic about them when I first heard about them. Luckily, there were quite a few retailers near me, so I got to try them first hand. Honestly, they made a **** of a difference for me. I experience eye strain if I'm in front of a monitor, or playing games for a long while. And I know once FFXIV is in full swing, I'll probably be doing alot more, more often. I don't wear glasses, but considering how I treat my eyes, I should. Aside from the price tag, and the funky yellow tints, I like them alot. That's just my testimonial, if it's worth anything to anyone.

Alright, if you're going to vouch, I'll give it a shot. I tend to get irritated eyes fairly easily after using computers (my eyes are bothering me as I type this, unfortunately).
