I have a 1.5mbps DSL connection. It only costs me $15/mo and it's always been enough. I only d/l at about 150 kb/s which has always been ok and doesn't really drive me nuts. It's always been fast enough for FFXI and WoW.

With FFXIV however I'm getting these situations where people in my group are off doing something and my delay is so bad they're not even on my screen. This usually happens when my wife is watching a movie on the internet. It always slowed it down before but the little lag I had in WoW and FFXI from it was bearable. My provider offers a 6mbps DSL upgrade for only another $20/mo. Would it fix my problem and allow me to just have "beta lag" like everyone else?

The d/l speed increase would just be the cherry on top, but I'm far more concerned with being able to play my games smoothly. Her internet tv shows/movies completely destroy my counterstrike experience as well. :(

Explain to her the internet is for trashing people on forums and playing games, not watching TV and shows. That's what we have cable for.

REal answer for you, it would help you some, More connections you have to the net the more it splits up. So by getting a faster internet speed it should increase your performance. Also power cycle your router, may help, make sure she isnt usign the net at the time.

Power cycle: unplug the router, wait 10-15 seconds then plug it back in.

You could also consider getting a second connection equivalent to the one you already have for cheaper than the upgrade, if your company would allow it. That way you each would have your own dedicated connection and would not have to worry about what the other was doing.

Thanks puppy will do. My buddy has a 10mbps cable connection and 3 or 4 people can watch youtube at the same time. All I need is enough power for 2 so it seems 6mbps will be fine. I won't have to buy a new router or anything either, so I'm just going to go for it.

I have the same connection as you, and I didn't have alot of lag, but I also learned that streaming netflix while playing wasn't going to work out.
