Does this refer to physical rank or your current class rank?

It's not physical rank, it's physical level. The only thing that the term "rank" applies to is classes.

If an optimal rank on a piece of armor is 14, how can I still wear it when my class rank is like 6?

It doesn't say required, it says optimal. Optimal means best. What (if any penalties) are applied if you equip it prior to the optimal level I don't know.

Hmm I wonder what kind of nerfs (for lack of a better word) our equipment suffers when it's higher level than our class rank.
I wonder if it will be possible to wear optimal rank 50 endgame gear on a level 1 character.

Also, with our armor needing repairs (even the underwear) ... How do I fully repair underwear since I can't remove it to repair it?

The broken underwear issue is something the devs have to address. I doubt it will be left the way it is.

What I wonder is this: At level 10, should I wear lvl 6 gear, or lvl 14? Is the penalty on the lvl 14 so much that it's worse than my lvl 6? Someone figure this out plz! :3

Depends on the gear really, there wouldn't be a set standard. An example is the weapons for my conjurer, I'm at rank12 and was using a rank 7 maple wand...then bought a rank22 willow wand, but equipping it showed me the stats were weaker than the maple at the time. Now I'm at a point where the gimped willow wand is better than the maple wand...gonna have it to test it by switching and looking at your stats...

In your specific example I'd guess moving up to the rank14 gear would be better...

Does it tell you the adjusted stats when you're wearing it? I guess I'll have to take a closer look, I literaly just finished my hempen cowl, put it on, danced around, and logged off for bed cuz it had taken me soooo long to synth that thing.

disagree, ranks are your characters true progression not your level, also, I would thin if it meant physical level it would say optimal level, not rank. Secondly, coupled with this being next to favoured classes, it really seems class type/rank is the determining factor in it.

Congrats on crafting 1, I had to buy mine...they really could do a better job of it, but best I can do is keep an eye on the stats to the left and see how they change while I change gear...the whole cowl things adds some extra thought because you're also losing your hat...

There's nothing for you to disagree with. It's not a matter of opinion. It's not called "Physical Rank." It's called "Physical Level." And it's not called "Class Level." It's called "Class Rank." I was responding to the OP's question whether it applied to physical rank or class rank. Since there's literally no such thing as "Physical Rank," it was a moot question.

Physical level.
Class rank.

Those are the terms.

"Optimal rank" can therefore apply only to class rank.

It looks like the wording of your original post may have contributed to some confusion, and Silverwyrm thought you were answering the original question with 'physical level'.
