I'm trying out the DoM classes and for both classes each time I try to cast a spell (well the 2 spells you start off with) a green tab pops up that says Area of effect and under that it says select a target, I know what AoE is but can all the starting spells but cast as AoE or singel target? I don't understand why I'm being prompt to pick AoE or a target? can someone tell me how this works?

Well, when the "Area of Effect" button is "darkened" (such as it is), the spell will only hit one target - if you enable AoE casting by either typing /aoe in the chatbar or by pressing the button or key you have bound to "Emote Menu/Stack Battle Commands" (dunno what the default is on a keyboard, sorry), it'll light up and look like << Area of Effect >> to warn you that it's going to hit more than one target. While I haven't done much research on the subject, yes, AFAIK, all the spells except Spirit Dart/Phantom Dart (which aren't really spells anyways) can be either single or AoE-targeted.

there is an AoE command to toggle it on or off.
You can push the button before you release the cast. (The one you mention on screen)

or you can set a macro or simply type.... /aoe
this will put a text statement in your log saying Area of Effect is enabled or Single Target is enabled.

Letting you know if you are in AoE mode or Single Target mode. :)
Careful with AoEs

If you change between aoe and single target, it still asks confirmation about aoe and you need to either press "enter" or retarget the NPC. Seems odd to me or am I doing something wrong ?

When you choose a spell and have the purple targeting circle on the enemy and the green "Area of Effect" button appears, you can press "Z" to toggle it on or off.
