Hello, this is my beta impression thread.

What I liked:
The grandness of this game. I have played from 1-10 in each city on a different class, and I have to say that each environment is grand and beautiful in it's own way.

Combat system. I loved playing gladiator once I got the shield. To time my guard skill with phalanx as well as counting light slashes really made this game interactive. I haven't had a chance to party, but I know that it will be great.

Gathering System. Also interactive. Makes you feel like you are really chopping that tree down.

Quests / Levequests: The main quest for every city was outstanding. I did them all back to back because I could not walk away from the story. (even after trying for an hour to figure out the emotes on the miners!) Levequests are also a great boost to your exp, so it is nice to have some aid in the solo/casual part of the game.

What I Didn't Like:
Mob Diversity. There doesn't seem to be any. I'm hoping this is just because it is beta, but one of the greatest things about ffxi was that if you got bored of killing this sheep, there was a funguar or a crab or a rabbit or...etc. to kill. I know that at least in ul'dah, From 1-7, I think I killed only marmots. It got very dull. I know that there are other mobs in the game, I loved watching the slideshow for little taru, big world. I have very high hopes for the mob diversity end game, but in the early game, I'm hoping that release will bring a bit more flavor.

Durability. Very frustrating feature. I want to stay in my cave killing moles, I don't want to go back to town every 20 minutes to repair. Weapons seem to deteriorate very fast.

Market Wards..........
This has to be one of the worst things about the beta right now. Upon hitting level 10 as gladiator, I decided to return home to repair and rest for a bit. While there, after sitting on a pretty pile of zeny, I decided to check out the local merchants to see if they were selling anything. After about an hour going through the first room of the market wards, checking out unsightly named merchants only to find hundreds of marmot skins (which I could personally give one to everyone who joins this game!), I gave up my search. Nobody was selling any form of armor or weapon. (before you condemn me here) I know this is just beta and people aren't going to spend their time setting up merchants, The real thorn in my side is the amount of time I sifted through absolute junk.

Lack of Epicness. FFXI had this feeling surrounding the classes. It really held true to older final fantasy games. You had bright colored AF sets that EVERYONE wanted to get. Most AF sets weren't that great, but every person got theirs and ran around town in it because it was so awesome. Thaumaturge without a red pimp hat just seems so boring.

tl;dr
I do love this game. After playing FFXI for a long time, I am definately impressed by this game and will be buying it. I do know that this is NOT ffxi and I shouldn't expect the same things, but it is still part of the final fantasy franchise and the players do expect some of the same. I know that on release there will be a plethora of quests and things to do. The market wards will probably get fixed to include either a search or scrapped for a central AH (yes please!). Anyways, please don't flame or troll me, I just needed to give this opinion so that maybe some people who are on the fence about getting this game will see that is it really an epic game, a huge beautiful world, and has some really scary monsters in it!

Dude we're all at the noobest part of the game. FFXI was the same, everyone starts off in brown ugly armor, looksing all the same until almost LVL 50... Havent you seen the images of paladin and BLM they were using to hype the game? Thats eventually the kind of cool equipment we'll get. And what about the NPCs in town, you know all the gear they wear will eventually be wearable by us right? Some of those are badass as ****.

You want to be decked out in golden armor at lvl1? Where will you go from there? What armor would make you feel all "WOOOOW" after that?

In the past week over the updates, they have been constantly adding new monsters. Most of what is there (or has been) were just placeholders as the new monsters were introduced.

Alot of the more badass MOBs are hidden in the corners of maps, it seems the further you stray from the paths, the bigger and badder everything gets.

Just to piggy back on that. Be sure to check out the class pages on the Zam FFXIV wiki if you haven't already. The pugilist armor they have on there is so cool I wanna die.

If you have the right tools, you can repair your own sword and shield on the spot ;)
