Can't get past the character screen. Help? Follow

Heya,

So I spent all day yesterday downloading the beta client and searching for ways to download the patches and whatnot, and finally, finally, I get it to work.

I log in, make a pretty elven girl and give her some earrings and a bow, and get ready to set off. I get some audio in the sound of chirping birds along with the loading screen with the little swirly icon thing at the bottom-right of the screen, and it jutters away for a minute or so and then disappears. However, instead of loading the game, the screen just stays black. I leave it for a good few minutes, but nothing happens.

Is it my PC being crappy or is there some way I can reduce the game's settings or anything? I don't have a clue what's good and what isn't when it comes to PCs, but my friend said it'd help to put my graphics card details here, so here's what it says:

Name: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Approx Total Memory: 825MB

Is this the problem, or is there something, anything at all I can do so that I can finally go bouncing around the world?

Thanks in advance to any/all who offer help!

Your card definitely isn't helping out in this situation.

Try this first if you haven't already.

Then, I'd suggest trying to make a character in another starting city just to test if you're getting the same error. I got something like this during Closed Beta, and had to wait for the 1st cutscene to pass before my screen did anything. But that seemed to be a fluke, and doesn't appear to do it anymore.

Alright, I'll do what the link says first, then try the character in a new place thing, and post up the results.

Okay, so, after updating my DirectX thing and my Driver thing, the game loads!

However, I'm literally getting one frame every five seconds. I managed to fumble my way into the config options in-game, and turned off all the shadows and 'physics' (whatever that means), but there's no improvement.

Is there something else I can do to get the game to a somewhat playable condition? I don't mind stripping it down to barebones (I play WoW with all the textures and stuff turned off and I still only get about 10 fps); I just want to look around the world and maybe shoot a few pesky goblins with my bow.

Has my PC doomed me not to play?

Exit the game and open the FFXIV config tool located in the Square Enix folder in your start bar. Turn down all the graphics settings in that. Also the in game settings will help.

Other than that, it sounds like your PC is severely limiting you. Might be time for an upgrade!

Right, so I found the config tool you mentioned and turned all the setting down to the lowest.

Now, however, something quite odd is happening. I open the game, log in, click the 'play' button, and get to the title screen and press the 'play' button there as well. From here, I get the loading icon in the bottom-right, but then it disappears after a bit, and my monitor kind of... stops working. The little light on the monitor flashes, the same as it does when it's switched on but the PC isn't on. The thing is that my PC is switched on - it's like the monitor suddenly doesn't 'recognise' my PC is there. The only thing I can do from here is restart my PC via the on/off button on the computer itself. I've tried this twice and it's happened both times.

Any idea what this is?

P.s. I really do appreciate your help; I know it can't be fun helping a bumbling clown such as myself.

I didn't change the resolution; I left it on whatever it was already using.

Just tried it again and the same thing happens each time...

Are you running the game in full screeen? If so, try disabling that. Then, try changing the game resolution to something small like 1024 x 768.

It doesn't run in fullscreen. Before, it was running in a resolution that was too wide for my screen - the edges were cut off.

To change the resolution, do I just access the same config tool as before and find the resolution option, or is it done somewhere else? Also, will it matter what my default resolution is, and if so, what should I use there?

Same config tool. Start > programs > ffxiv

Try changing that first. You should be ok with that unless you're using an ancient monitor running windows at like 800x600 or something.

All this could just be your PC hanging too. What did you score on the benchmark?

Sorry, what's 'the benchmark' mean?

Also, my monitor is very old... about 7-10 years I'd say.

Loook at the top of the first post in my sticky on this forum. Phones having issues or I would copy\paste it. Download, install and run the benchmark on LOW setting and post your score here.

I'm starting to think your PC is too old for this game though.

Even though some pc's / notebooks using on board graphics can run this game, it's generally a good idea to assume yours can't. I'm running a pretty high end graphics card, and still can't turn some things on. Also, i have AMD 64 x2 cpu 6000+ 3.0 (not over clocked) that is peggedat 98-100% most of the time in game.

So, in short, it's time to upgrade. Or, you can wait for PS3 release. It would be a cheaper alternative.

Alright, I guess I'll give it up as a bad job for now then. My PS3 is broken, so I need to get that fixed, which costs around $250.

Anyway, thanks very very much for the help; it's always nice to get personal feedback without fifty trolls looking to boost their ego.

Much appreciated!
