TGS is right around the corner, let's get some questions!Follow

It's just like SE to wait as late as possible to spill the beans. With the Tokyo Game Show coming up beginning Sept. 16, this would be a great opportunity for SE to start a major marketing push on their home turf. One way they can do that is by getting community sites talking!

I was hoping we could compile our questions since the initial release only is two weeks away and much remains a mystery. I know our friendly neighborhood admins may not be attending TGS, but if our questions are at least composed and out there in the aether we might just see some of them satisfied (or maybe someone might send a few to SE in hopes of them focusing on some of our desired topics during TGS ^^). I've got the journalism bug and I'd hate to see this opportunity wasted, since many interviews in the past few months have always asked the same general questions. I know general questions need to be asked so there are quotes for those who aren't die hard or in beta, but we shouldn't be neglected either.

If you have a question, post it and I'll add it to this OP, or feel free to second anything about which you're anxious to know. What I've listed below are things, I feel, SE should at least touch upon before release. Let's face it, we're the ones buying the game Sept. 22, not the casual crowd that will roll in come March.

And, in an attempt to get the attention of the powers that be, here's a Hello Kitty Bento! (PS, someone needs to light up the Elmer Signal. I've seen it before.)

Screenshot

Questions, go!

Guild marks:
- How do we get them?
- How much of a roll will they play in learning abilities and traits later in the game?

Retainers:
- Will we see a search function or some other aid in finding specific items in the mass of bazaars?
- Why do they have a level in the retainer list?
- Will there be retainer-related quests and storylines similar to an Adventuring Fellow in XI?

Gear:
- Will we still be able to equip any piece of equipment on any class regardless of optimal ranks and favors?
- Will we see many more recipes for armor varieties come retail release?
- How much higher-end gear will come from crafting compared to events/enemies/quests.

Quests:
- Will we be able to experience all main city storylines via one character?
- How much of the main city-state quests will we be able to complete solo?
- Will there be quests given by random NPCs?
- Can we expect any large scale battles?

Crafting:
- DoH classes seem to rely heavily on skills obtained via guild marks. How will these skills affect the success rate of craft attempts?
- Given that final products require many parts of the completed item, and each of those parts can be a different color and quality, will these differences show on the final product?
- Some recipes inform a player they are not proficient enough in another class. How much weight is put on these sub-class aspects on the success rate?

Companies:
- What are they and what do they do?
- What benefits do they provide that couldn't be achieved from a group of players simply using one player's retainer?

Surplus/bonus EXP:
- Where does it go?

From kenage:
1) Character creation has improved greatly from FFXI but is still lacking comparing to other MMORPG's, will we see more options at launch? (specially hair styles), moreover are you planning to add a way to modify the appearance of your character after being created (add/remove tatoos, hair styles/color)
2) Currently the repair system is taxing and presents many obvious flaws (un-unequipable equipment, equipment that it's required to repair itself, equipment decay fast to the point to be unmanageable) what are the improvements to this system planned for the release?

From DragonBourne:
1) Will we see any other kind of quests/leveling content besides grinding and guildleves at release and if not, will the ridiculous cooldown on guildleves be either removed or at least lowered dramatically?
2) Will there be any kind of drops besides materials from mobs?
3) Will there be rare/unique mobs that drop special rare items?
4) Will the UI be server side or client side and, if server side, will there be localized servers to cut down on UI lag?

From Fetter:
1) I need to know if they are going to allow us to remap the camera controls to the arrow keys, like in FFXI. I have a workaround, but it is annoying, because I have to turn it back on every time I use my menu.
2) Also, I would like further explanation on whether or not "bonus exp" is actually a bonus, or just a friendly way of reminding us of how much exp we are "throwing away"

From RIDDER
1) Will there be a mail system at launch?

Class related:

Will Arcanist and/or Musketeer be playable classes? If yes, will they be ready for launch? If not, when can we expect them?

This one is easy to answer.

Yes.
No.
They don't know. Possibly an update, most likely the first expansion.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

You never know, it's probably still worth asking. And besides, such questions might also provide some info as to exactly when we can expect the first major update, if nothing else.

Oh, cool. Thanks for clearing that one up! Been running around to all the guilds every few ranks hoping to trigger some new dialogue.

DoH- Weaver (or any other classes in a similar boat)

Is there any chance we can get the optimal level on hempen cloth LOWERED so it is not higher than the required crafting level for everything made of it? It would be nice for those who want to START as a crafter and not have to deal with the adventure portions of the first story line quest to get their 20k gil just to proceed with their craft since there are fewer guildleves for some DoH classes in certain areas. (only one in some areas, 3 or 4 in others, but all DoW/DoM classes get 4 guildleves from the start.)

With all the negative feedback from controls to lag and how it affects combat, to no AH, do you have a list of goals you hope to add within the first month or two after release?

I can think of more, but... have to go to work. ><

I'm gonna assumme you've got some yourself? if so, when they are rewarded for level 20 leves, are they rewarded in bunches? as in 200-300 marks or is it more like 2-3 marks? cuz some of the stuff for crafters costs like 5000 guild marks.

Just a second confirmation yesterday I got 1124 from the leve involving killing 8 cactuars in the Camp Horizon, I did it on only one start difficulty.

If I thought there were any way to get an actual answer, I would really be curious to ask:

Do you have the slightest idea how many problems the game still has? Does that worry you?

Not complaining-- I just wonder if they know how many players are offput by the game so far, even in regards to little features that they did well in XI but dropped the ball on in XIV.

This is all I can think of at the moment. If I think of more, I'll post. And by all means, if anyone knows the answer to any of these, please share!

So a question, are you just going to cherry pick the ones you like/approve of? Or is omission of others mentioned due to format?

I'll comb back through. I'm sorry I missed any. Been playing in beta tonight so I've just been hitting the arrow that takes me to a new post and grabbing what I see at quick glance.

Thats cool.

In the 3rd response to your OP, I had put in a question regarding whether or not they will be allowing us to remap controls to the arrow keys like in FFXI (this is pretty much the only make or break for me in regards to FFXIV. I can deal with anything else, but if I can't control my character well enough to do anything..)

We have a workaround at the moment, but it is annoying to use, and they might break it later on or decide it's a 3rd party app and ban those of us that use it.

Aren't companies just the FFXIV verion name for linkshell. Your question implies that they have another purpose.

There are going to be companies as well as linkshells.

From what I gather, linkshells are more for just community (hanging out, socialising, etc).

Companies are supposed to be more geared towards organised end game play.

How they are different exactly we don't know yet. Perhaps you can only be in one company, while having as many linkshells as you like?

Linkshells are called linkshells.

SE has mentioned there is another grouping of players called Companies, but they haven't really focused on their use.

While a player may join up to eight linkshells, they may belong to only one company. It's been a while since SE has said anything about it. Perhaps they dropped the idea all together. The only other mentioning of it I could find was here:

http://www.ffxivcore.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1

http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=12794885723214121&howmany=50

http://www.ff14news.com/2010/06/17/ffxiv-news-from-e3-2010-%E2%80%93-day-3/

This is a tid bit from a panel at E32010

Quote:
… players [will] be able to create and join groups called “Companies.” Similar to player guilds in other games, Companies can themselves “level up,” presumably offering additional benefits to the members therein. When asked if Companies would have shared housing or other group-owned assets, they smiled and said that players would have real-estate to call their own, but “weren’t ready to announce anything more at this time”

EDIT:

Dug up this interview with Tanaka here: http://www.massively.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-our-exclusive-interview-with-final-fantasy-xiv-executiv/

Quote:
Will the guild system be more involved this time around than linkshells were in FFXI? Will there be more features and incentives?

We have a system called "company," a little bit larger than a linkshell. At this moment we can only say that there is a gameplay element to grow a company, but we'll be announcing full details of the company shortly, so stay tuned.

How many additional classes do you have planned, for that first major version update, you mentioned would be shortly implemented after the release of FFXIV. Source @3:40 in "The Making of the Realm #3"
