Which is your city/area of choice so far?
The winding, claustrophobic greens of Gridania?
The open, searing canyons of Uldah?
The cold, windy mountains of Limsa Lominsa?

Gridania's city might be windurst-like, but the outer zone is nothing like it.
Uldah's zone is most like Sarutabaruta.
Limsa Lominsa is fairly true to sandoria.

I like gridania but man, the zone music is the most boring 10 second loop ever. It's also super claustrophobic. Anyone else agree? I love the openness and exploration in limsa and uldah.
When running in gridania's zone, its just the same 'copy-pasta' over and over.

Gridania is going to be crowded

Uldah will likely be the early trade hub as its the "link" between the 2 city (currently), +they sell alot of npc armor in this city

Limsa Lominsa feel nice and NPC items are more organized (easy to find the required tools and weapon in B3 haven't check if they change it)

But to answer the OP question i'm going to start in gridania jus cos i love the trees

They should just reuse Windy's music, it would fit it fine and its 100000 times better than Grid's current theme.

My plan's been for Ul'dah all along, but despite what many are saying about Gridania it's starting to grow on me. I like the peaceful forest & music...tons of fishing spots, conjurer's guild...I may have to consider it...

All 3 cities are beatiful, Limsa was great but i want to be a carpenter and could i find a guild there, so that decided it for me, didn't expect to like archer either (wasn't a fan of rng on ffxi) but i like it here, so Gridania is the place i feel i need to be, for my botany/carpentry and archery. makes sence no?

After going to Gridania in open beta, I've chosen Ul'dah as my starting city. It's much easier to get around in and not so damned closed like the Black Shroud around Gridania is. Had that forest been much less maze-like I may have gone with Gridania. I loved the whole nature-feel Windurst had and Gridiana has that feeling around it even greater. But its entire setup outside the city is the exact opposite of an open-ended world SE was trying to go for.

I've thought about it, at first I didn't like gridania as much, but it's growing on me. There's a lot of hidden/unused areas around gridania to grind in without being bothered by anyone.
I like ul'dah but it always felt someone was always on top of me.
Gridania seems like a very peaceful place to call home. It is VERY green.
I don't think it'll matter a whole lot where anyone starts. Travel is fairly easy.
Hometown didn't mean a whole lot in FFXI, don't much expect it be a major factor here either.

I am going for Limsa Lominsa, becuase I was a Sandoria person in FFXI and love the massive views. None of the other cities you can see for miles around. I want to do fishing and cooking, both guilds are there as well. Looks modern and I love the sound of footsteps on the planks, cant cope with the pitter patter of Gridania.

I was all about Gridania at first, especially since it has both the Conjuror's and Archer's guilds (me being a Conjuror and friend playing an Archer). But like others have said, music is a bit boring and the city is a bit sprawled out. I REALLY like Ul'dah after making a character there; the music is good, the city is well laid out, and it runs smoother on my pc, lol.

I'll probably stick with Gridania, unless travelling between cities is quicker and easier than it was in FFXI.

I agree. Only downside to uldah is the godawful dust storms :P They're greenish brown and totally disgusting.

I Like everythign about limsa lominsa, but I'm wondering what happened to the sunny warm plains from the Alpha.
Limsa Lominsa, as it is now, is a cloudy, dark, cold windy place. Why would SE make a place look worse due to lame weather? :(

I like Ul'Dah and Gridania equally. My friends want to start in Gridania so that's where I'll be. I don't really like either of the DoW jobs that are based there so that makes me a little sad, but my DoL and DoH are based there so that helps.

Ul'Dah hands down.
Although, I think I spend most of my time near Limsa fighting Dodos and Puks.

Started in Gridania in beta. I hate gridania now. Closed paths, lone wolves, boring music, I'm starting in limsa. Short jump to ul'dah and limsa has easy access to wind & fire shards.

I love the gridania story but I must agree the forest is quite annoying. Not annoying enough to deterr me from some foresty magic story awesomeness though.

its the music and long winding paths of nothingness to get from mob to mob which is annoying. you also cant see the sky or any nice graphics, just oversaturated greenery.
Uldah is nice but the sandstorms suck, and it looks more like a wasteland than a desert or canyon. Very brown and desolate.
Limsa is cloudy 24/7, I really can't stand it. Why would SE do this to what used to be a nice zone

Yeah, the sandstorms in Ul'Dah are SUPER annoying. I HATE Gridania cause it feels so closed in, it's a narrow path between huge mountains with no mobs for most of the trial, it's just lonely and isolated. Limsa is okay, kinda boring.

I was going to start in Grid but then goldsmith became my favoured class so I think I will go Ul'dah... plus doing just 1 night of leves at Emerald Moss was enough to make me hate the black shroud.

I'm curious, so ill ask outright: Does limsa lominsa ever clear up? For those who've been playing in that city/zone often, do the clouds EVER go away?
I've played quite a bit in the city and personally haven't seen a clear day. If it was clear more often, I'd be there for sure.
Right now I'm missing the high-fantasy forest of ronfaure, and the cheery mysterious beastmen-ridden canyons of sarutabaruta. These zones are relatively featureless, I feel. Very mmo-like in feel. Except gridania, that zone belongs in a phantasy star game, not an actual mmo.
