I really wanted this game to be great... I've been waiting patiently for it to come out and I am usually quick to look past superficial issues and minor glitches etc. This is beta after all, but fundamentally this game is 5 steps backwards from FFXI.
First of all its beautiful to look at, the characters are great, the scenary is spectacular and the combat looks good. The classes are interesting but I think lack depth and focus. This game does not have defined roles like FFXI did, I can see why some people had issues with FFXI and I agree to an extent but one of the great things about that game was how tactical the combat was - and this game loses every bit of that tactical element. I have seen absolutely no reason to party right now especially as a mage class it is a waste of time. Your group expects you to be support and heal, buff, debuff, throw a bit of damage if you have time but doing all these roles will get you absolutely nothing for your effort. You will gain basically no class xp for all your trouble. Healing is a nightmare right now because targeting is terrible, never mind the MAJOR lag on healing actually being performed, but you need to physically target the party member to be healed in the heat of combat and then if you want to pray for a skill up and toss a spell at the mob you need to retarget the mob, no more targeting through the tank.
Healing could be made easier if positioning were a factor in this game like it was in FFXI but its not. Skills chains were a mainstay of FFXI and in this game they don't play as significant a role at all. I remember the days of FFXI when the THF would be behind the tank and a WAR would WS then provoke to draw aggro while the THF sneaked/tricked WS behind the tank for a nice skill chain and the BLM would magic burst off that and it was all so satisfying when properly executed but this game has none of those elements.
Then you have the ridiculous menu system that is beyond tedious, why in the world would they set it up like that? These are things that have been done in a hundred other games a hundred times better. I think one of the major flaws of this game is that they seemed to make things "different" and "new" for no other reason than because they are different and new. They don't enhance the intuitiveness of the game or add a new element of immersiveness or anything, I challenge anybody to give me a single reason that the new menu system is good. Just one reason... I can't think of any. Then we get to the whole lack of auction house... I am really struggling to come up with one reason that that might enhance our gameplay in any way, shape or form. Why would I want to tediously click through 4 menus screens on each mule, in a densely populated mule area for the purposed of seeing all the junk that people have for sale when I am looking for something specific.
I understand that some people were frustrated by the heavy reliance of partying in FFXI, I sat many a frustrated hour LFG myself but they have sacrificed too much in this game to make it solo friendly and in the process have lost all incentive to play with other people. I was playing FFXIV today and I left the group because as a CONJ, I was wasting my time xp-wise so I wanted to go solo to actually gain some experience. Then I thought to myself, why don't I go and upgrade my gear but I can't find anything to upgrade to because its impossible to search and I got tired clicking through menus of peoples junk on their retainers. I thought to myself it would be easier to craft and make the stuff myself - but then it hit me that this is a solo game with zero incentive to group up and rely on the community and thats what made FFXI so great.
I haven't given up on FFXIV yet... I keep reminding myself that we entered FFXI a year+ into the game and were not around for launch like the JP folks were so maybe things were rough in the beginning back then too. The problem though is that this game is so far from what I think a released product should be that I can't fathom how they will get it together before the end of the month. MMOs take up too much time to play more than one or two and right now this is probably not in my top 5. I hope it doesn't bomb and spell doom for the series because I think it has promise... its just a really long way from being realized.
