Gilsellers.

Ok first off, I know I shouldn't be surprised. At all. But, I am.

Why? Who knows... Maybe it's because I was one of that 1% of the human population who actually grew up with 2 parents (ok, it's probably more like 1.5%, but still), maybe it's because they instilled decent values in me (and a bizarre sense of humor), maybe it's because I'm a Taruta- ...er, Lalafell, and being so happy-go-shorty, I forget the evils of the world creeping into even our beloved games.

(I would have also accepted "distracted", "clueless", and "naive")

Anyway, due to my job, I've had much less time to check out the beta than I thought I would, so I've played very little so far. I decided to jump onto a new server where a friend is (Go Eske!) and start in Gridania since I haven't seen it yet. I finally get all the way through the opening cutscenes, through the initial gabbing with the [insert random RPG adventurers' inn/tavern/meeting place], and then it hits me...

Heartburn. Waves of red hot, choking- (drinks water)...

Rage. Waves of red hot anger and blinding madness fill my brain as I am smothered under the relentless assault of spam (which for a Lalafell, is like maybe 2 - 2.5 feet, sometimes more if you're quick and can crawl up the nearest Roegadyn's leg).

In my attempts to try and block this spammer, I discovered yet another little area of the game which is outdated: the chat window. The almost-standardized, right-click functionality of most major MMOs makes FFXIV's chat window look like SE hasn't played an MMO since FFXI. I may be missing something as I haven't spent the time in-game I would like, but if I'm not, little design flaws like this are going to annoy players new to the FF MMOs. User-friendly and ease-of-use go a very long way, and the lack of tends to turn away those trying something "new".

(by the way, for anyone looking to block a spammer and didn't know how: Main Menu > Social Lists > Blacklist, enter their name, exit their spam)

("Woo, wasn't this about gilsellers? GET TO THE POINT!><!")
Oh, right...
This whole event made me wonder what SE plans to do about gilsellers, and specifically, their spam. The ridiculous chat spam was a slight problem in WoW, and it was a much bigger problem in Aion, but both of those games had a simple feature to report and block those players. The last couple of major MMO releases have had problems with RMTs spamming right at launch. SE really needs to find a way to control this or it will cause a lot of problems for the players (and possibly drive others away). Given some of the seeming resistance to change or upgrade to some of the features of current MMOs, I'm more than a little concerned SE won't have a solution for this for quite some time.

One thing that could work would be to filter out the the shout channel, but if real people (because I don't consider gilsellers real people, lol) use the shout channel, I would be bothered that I couldn't see what they are saying.

Oh that's gotta suck...nice entrance into the game huh? It infuriates me as well, and right now we just have to blist 'em and move on. I'm sure we'll be able to easily report them in retail & hopefully SE is quick to act. Seems like they created some parts of the game with ******** RMT in mind so hopefully they're ready to get rid of them.

One thing that I do laugh at is their outrageous prices...50k gil for $20? **** you get 30k for finishing the opening quest and I've wasted so much gil already...including a hat for 165k = P
I can only hope most people will laugh at them and not use their services...

It's beyond me why they're even wasting their time trying to sell gil in the BETA version of a game that will be wiped before then. In a case like this if someone is stupid enough to buy gil or a power-level from RMT they deserve to be scammed. Absolutely no gain from buying gil or any other forms of cheating for non-permanent data. You may as well pay someone to rob you blind.

By the way, the ignore feature leaves MUCH to be desired. There's a gil-seller in the camp near Ul'dah in Besaid that's got a randomly gibberish name. It'll take you up to a minute or longer to type it in and ensure you've got it properly blocked.

Advertising.

Also FFXIV has no RMT defending mechanism in game. Crafting and gathering mechanism are to prevent botting, but in the end it will only punish us, the players.

FFXIV is screaming for RMT because how you get XP from solely mobs. Also the amount of loot which drops or does not drop, wind shards come to mind. Also combat mechanism is easily made for botting. TAB + attack (auto run to mob), mob kill auto loot, next mob and so on.

And afaik there is no software (for example punkbuster) to prevent third party program use in combination with FFXIV.

gilsellers are only good when they claim that hnm you have been camping for 3 hours and then they slowly wipe =), i used to be screaming at my screen when they claimed but there was nothing more enjoyable than seeing alot of rmt dead bodys lying there. Also inviting them to party then D2ing them was pretty cool. SE have fixed that now with having to "accept" the teleport

Great...

I just noticed that the Blacklist only allows for 200 names. If this goes like Aion did, I'll have that maxed out from gilseller spam in less than a week...

Wow, really? What is the constraint on this from a programming perspective? I mean, is it really hard to add one extra line to that blacklist array?

But honestly here, gil spam is going to be ridiculous... I sincerely hope that FFXIV doesn't turn out like Aion did that first few weeks. Nightmares!

I seriously hope I don't fill that list with Gil Sellers. I'm going to need a few slots for annoying people.

Exactly, have fun. Have fun by playing the game. Not having others play it for you.

What are you thinking exactly? First I'll pay to play. Then I'll pay to have someone else play for me. Then I am awesome.

*sigh*

****, they found the world outside Limsa. >.< It was nice to only have the couple of RMTs spamming the one camp. :\

And can you /blist add <t>? If so then it's just a matter of targeting Lasglkhasgas Xhglkasgasgh as opposed to typing something like that out. (Though if not, usually they spam pretty quickly so you'll have ample opportunity to type it out. >.>;;; )

First, don't be an idiot here. Be an idiot with your friends, your family, your neighbors...you know, the people who can headbutt you in the face when you get out of line. Here, the expectation is that you make at least a moderate effort to not come across as having been partially lobotomized.

Second, while the OP may well have overdone it with the drama and fluff leading to his point about finding RMT in the game the moment he was let free of the evil clutches of the opening intro, his response was not altogether inappropriate. In XI, RMT rendered the game virtually unplayable for a rather extended period of time due to their botting of HNM triggers and heavy manipulation of the economy. SE was largely to blame for letting things get so out of hand, but ultimately SE wouldn't have had to worry about it if the RMT had stayed out. And the RMT wouldn't have gained such a stranglehold if certain players didn't support them by buying currency from them. So you see, it's a cycle, and part of that cycle are people playing the game who are too stupid and/or ignorant to realize the impact their decisions have on the rest of the playerbase. It's like going to a friend's house to play monopoly and the fat kid from next door keep sitting on the board. So yes, there are some real life morals involved in the decision to buy or not buy gil because of the impact RMT can have on the game, and the only reason the RMT are in the game doing their thing is because people continue to support them.

Now you toddle off and ask the doctors for the rest of your brain back like a good lil boy.

What's particularly frustrating about that part is that there's no way to copy and paste the name in. The last gil seller that I was inclined to blacklist (he was spam-shouting his message every 1-2 seconds at the aetheryte and literally overwhelming the chat window) had a name like:

"glsihalfkfhsial fifhslffhfkfjfh"

Not a lot of fun to try to enter into the blacklist window manually! Smiley: mad

No thats quite inconveniant. If you're in for the early access I doubt there will be much Gil Seller spam, in fact I think you're only going to see a lot of spam from that lot if Square Enix give out free trial accounts and of course when we get phishing scams and dodgy iframes placed on web sites. They will not spend £30.00 to see their account banned 10 minutes after they make it to town.

If SE doesn't add an AH or some sort of search function for retainer bazaars, I doubt RMT will be going out of business on FFXIV.

My theory: They're actually FFXIV staffers (or a bot). Testing a system whereas if a "person" gets put on X number of people's blacklists, they get flagged as potential RMT and possibly have their accounts auto-suspended pending investigation. How cool would that be?

uhh.. what? Get out of the house... and eat a sandwHich? Does he make the sandwHich first and then go outside with it? Or does he have to leave his house this very moment and buy a sandwHich at a shop? Also are you inferring that
his post count would somehow go down if he did this or would the sh*t he talked have been more appropriate if he were outside eating a sandwHich when he typed it? Answers to these questions would be helpful.

I'm not even going to touch on how big of a hypocrite you are. That one line alone about eating a sandwich is too hilarious to overshadow with anything else.

That was unnecessarily rude. Keep the extreme flaming like this down or I'm going to have to start muting.
