Dropped my outdoor fps from 50-60 to 30-40.

I can't play the game anymore without getting headaches. why? Because now the game is always choppy, even when outdoors.
Edit: Video example of what I'm talking about: http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=1284126994216624172&page=1

Before, it used to only be like this when in cities, which I could cope with. But now the game is constantly choppy because, for some reason, they made the outdoor areas perform as horribly as city areas. It's really unbearable.

I'm not only talking about low fps (which is definitely the case), but ALSO, I get a pause/slowdown every 4-5 seconds, no matter where in the game I am.

Before you ask, changing my settings does not help me remove this choppiness. The choppiness is similar to the loading hitches in elder scrolls oblivion, or fallout 3. My hardware setups is fine, it's the game. And I'm angry beyond understanding. I can't even play this game with a straight face anymore and I really don't want it to be that way.

I got an hour or so in this AM before work, and I don't notice a drop in FPS inside or outside. I'm going with your hardware. I was still able to gaily run around the woods stabbing animals with my spear.

I'd check your settings or you gear.

I havent changed anything since the update. I've heard of others with lower performance after the update, including the choppiness. I've been able to get 60fps outside + 20-30fps in cities before the update. Now I ge 40fps outside + choppiness

Are you sure the update didn't reset your config to default settings? Just something to check if you haven't.

So you think that I'm complaining without having tried to fix the problems myself? I already said "I can't fix it", meaning I tried to. Not to sound facetious but yeah :P

Anyone else experiencing the stuttering? That's the real issue here.

Alright then, maybe if you state which server you're on people can share their experiences.

I'm on 3 different servers with 3 different characters.
I made a bug thread where I'm sharing videos on these sorts of things.

It 'feels' like the game wants my HDD to load things, but this is 2010, games should not lag from hdd usage like they did back in 2006 in game like oblivion.

I've never gotten stuttering, just frame skipping (or micro stuttering) which should only be limited to multi-GPU systems. I only run a single card and FFXIV is the only game that does it. No settings in my NVIDIA control panel does anything to resolve it. Running under a different OS doesn't resolve it. Nothing I've tried has resolved it.

I'm at a loss. I can only say that SE really needs to learn how to correctly program and optimize applications for PCs.

About your low performance; Are you running windowed or fullscreen? People reported horribly low FPS after an update and changing to Windowed mode resolved the problem.

Windowed or fullscreen, the same thing happens.
I run in windowed though.

And yes, no other game is like this, and if it IS, then I can lower the settings and make it run smoother.
I'm talking about very demanding games too. FFXI doesn't even look that great, not good enough to warrant this. There's hardly even any postprocessing being done most of the time, just basic texturing + polygons and basic lighting, and the game doesnt wanna run smoothly simply because I'm in an area with 10 other people.
10 people who aren't gears-of-war-level-detailed, just normal high-poly characters. There's no reason for the tension.

But my problems revolve around stuttering and such, that's my biggest concern. It made oblivion and fallout lame to play eyestrain-wise.

If your computer hitches on Oblivion and Fallout 3, maybe its just a hardware problem. FFXIV has a higher hardware requirement than either of those two games. Having underpowered hardware appears to only make server lag even worse (as I've seen comparing my weak laptop to my strong desktop).

My laptop experienced the exact same thing last night. I don't know fps, as I wasn't tracking it, but the stuttering every ~5 seconds was quite noticable/annoying. I even lowered my settings from what they were before, but it was to no avail.

Must have been a code tweak affecting only certain gpus.

Edit: Fps, not gps, stupid iPhone. :P

@hydra
oblivion was 4 years ago. i didnt even play that on pc, i played it on xbox. I simply was using oblivion as an example so some people would understand what I'm talking about

@guy above me
perhaps it your HDD. I'm using a 7200rpm, so it shouldnt be the issue, but perhaps your issue is stemming from the 5200rpm laptop drive loading things slowly?
Can anyone help us out by telling us if they experience this, and if they have a 2.5" or 2.5" (laptop or desktop) drive? Please? Thanks.

Are your drivers new? Perhaps SE updated the code to reflect new GPU drivers, thus breaking yours if it is old.
#15 Sep 10 2010 at 8:48 AM Rating: Default
the game used to run horribly under the new nvidia drivers. Now I'm supposed to update my drivers? I'll give it a shot, but I hope it doesnt ***** me over more than the game already is. thanks for the recommendation

update/edit: the newest driver is from july, which I already have. so no, this own't help. I'll try rolling back my driver

To those above me:

to my knowledge, S-E's update didn't change the rpm speed of my hdd. It is 7200. It's a pretty beefy laptop.

Keep in mind both of us (As well as those who posted similar troubles last night) were all working fine/better before this update. It's a code issue.

My laptop has a radeon HD 5870 with the latest and greatest ATI catalyst driver 10.8.

Again, I believe this is most like a code issue that will pick on certain computer specs, most likely gpus.
