Keyboard bindingsFollow

#1 Sep 10 2010 at 9:54 AM Rating: Default
I was told during beta 3 that they implemented keyboard binding config. But this is clearly not the case. I'd lile to use the keyboard but I can't stand the current inefficient controls. Will this (a pc game) have the "Feature" to set your own controls? I hate asking stupid questions like this, I feel like a total suckup. Simply, this is unacceptable for any pc game, even made since 2000. SC2 is the only game to get away with it because it has a unique control layout.

I can't put my head around it, but whatever - here I am asking the simple question: will this game have custom bindings. -.-

you can do it now from the config menu in game.

The trick is that you cant rebind a key that is already assigned. Just go in there, click on a control you would like to reassign, then click backspace, that will clear out the current key. At that point you can start putting in your own, but you will need to look around to unbind a key from some other command before you can assign it.

You cannot edit the skill keys, the cursor keys, and so forth. It's horrible. I have to move my keys like a ninja across my keyboard. I have to move to 'enter' constantly, move all the way to 'escape' instead of bind a comfortable 'back' button where i want to. irritance

edit: oh my god, i cannot bind 'delete', beside end. i cant even use that sector as a d-pad for camera controls. nor the arrows because they wont let you rebind the arrows to the numpad. holy donkey

im pretty close to the edge w/ this game's incompleteness. head's poppin a vein over so many different things about this game :@

Doublepost warrants this:

they mislabelled "Back" and "forward" in the keyboard config. You must bing "back" as w and "forward" as s. I'm officially laughing at this ordeal now. I can't even make fun of it anymore. It's like a three legged dog

Moreso, So many keys are 'unbindable'. such as the num keys, the arrows, enter, escape, etc. SE wants you to do whatever they want, keyboard wise. they kill the 'insert-pgdown' keypad island by making 'delete' unbindable. it's ridiculous.
'/' for some reason cant be bound because it starts the chat window, when that's what space is dedicated to doing.
baffling

they have 'strafe' buttons, but they do the exact same things as the normal left/right controls. What the ****?

you're forced to use 'ctrl' and 'alt' for macros, even if you find them awkward to reach. you can't simply bind macros to certain keys like in every other mmo
and i dont even like other mmos. this isnt an mmo vet being angry at SE.
i just want a comfortable config.

I'm forced to use a controller, but playing the game with one is a slow ordeal because of skill selection. I also find keyboard mroe comfortable but not this completed backwards scheme

Strafe buttons are only used in first person mode.. are you attempting to strafe in 3rd person?

logically, but i suppose it makes sense (SE would have to make new strafe animations) so im fine with no strafing.

another bug:
you cannot RE-bind tab to anything. i just noticed that SE managed to set 'tab' and 'delete' to things, but when you try to do this, it doesnt work, i suppose because the game thinks youre using tab to go to the next form, not entering it as the button.

so basically you cant bind a ton of keys, because the form sucks and wont let you. -.-

and yes, i removed all the bindings. its not currenly being used, it simply wont let me bind it

Important:
for some reason, the cursor keys (Arrows) dont work for selecting targets. but they do on the controller. o.o seriously

doubleposting to ask for help:
the game defaults to its default controls every time you strt the game.

once i access the config screen, my custom bindings are all there - then all i have to do is exit that window and then my custom bindings work.

pretty fricken silly. could someone help explain this? I don't get it one bit

lol welcome to my and everyone else's world.

I'm fairly new to FF and SE but have been playing MMO's for the past 10 years (never touched WOW though, yukki), and I'm baffled by how non user friendly this setup is. I keep praying that this is for beta only and when retail comes out this and about 99% of other things that are UI/Character related are changed/fixed.

I'm not asking for mods/addons but good GOD if I want my inventory to open when I press "i" I should be able.
Or the fact that you need a game pad to scroll your map or use keys J, I, K ,L to scroll map.

My GF keeps trying to get me to pre-order so I can play with her at launch but I refuse. I'm planning on taking over her account the first few hours of launch to try things out for my self and see if there are any changes made, then give it a day or so since launch day will probably be laggtastic and see if I will go out and get the MC or point at her and go "HAHA"

Being an online japanese game, it will take months for the most basic things to be implemented. they will label them as 'features'. I experienced this with ffxi and phantasy star universe

omg i tried multiple times to figure this one out, this game needs to be way more intuitive at launch.

Although I can see the point of the need for binding keys for your own use. The settings of the keybinds in the game are not that horrible. Most keys are comfortable together if you are used to the wasd method.

If you do not want to play with a gamepad and still want to redesign the keybinds, I can say buy yourself a G13 or N52 keypad. It is a handy nifty keypad for use in any game :)

You cannot bind a good chunk of keys, you cant change the modifiers, you cant bind macros to keys. its really limited.
even using a controller is limiting, because you have to scroll around a bunch to select macros and skills quickly. its really difficult.

The other annoying thing is, at least for me, all my remapped keybindings do not take effect when I restart the game. I have to go down in the key bindings menu first, escape back out, and then they work.

You might try using a program like autohotkey which remaps the keys on your keyboard. This is quite useful for games/programs that don't let you rebind keys. However, you have to turn it on when you play the game, and turn it off later.

I am gonna try out autohotkey right now.

I tried writing a few macros in the game but the only one I could get working was /loot
lol wtf?

I'll keep u posted on how autohotkey turns out

Also you cannot use the ~ key to the left of "1", at least it wouldn't let me use it for the menu function.

Yeah i think i already ranted about that, but maybe it was a different thread.
I've been fooling around with autohotkey, trying to get a key to send a "Shift + Tab" signal, so i can use it to target enemies the other way (of course remapping 'tab' to somewhere better). didnt work out

anyways, the program is unintuitive and built for programmers, not actual end users. not a fan.
would you like to simplify the simple process of simply "making one key do what another key would" ? like making capslock be a *?
I've done this through "sharkkeys" which is intuitive, but you can't toggle it off and on (which isnt a big deal cause caps lock sucks anyways).

Try having a look on the following thread for more information about this

It's not going to be perfect, but I won't play the game without it now (even if it means a crashing Alt-Tab to start it up) ^^.

Well the key thing about strafe is that it moves the character to the side without re-aiming the camera - it doesn't have to maintain the character's facing.

They don't need any new animations - they just need to make the strafe keys do what the move left and and move right keys ALREADY do after you've adjusted the camera with the mouse.

Yes, you read that right - if you position the camera using the mouse, suddenly left and right do exactly what the strafe keys should be doing all the time, at least until you adjust the camera again using the keyboard controls.

I should be able to choose between using the turn and strafe keys depending on whether or not I want the camera to rotate while I move, rather than the current system where both sets of keys do the same thing, either turning after you use the keyboard camera controls (or by default on startup) or strafing after adjusting the camera with the mouse.

I totally agree, i'd like turnleft/right to control the camera after you've moved it with the mouse. as it stands, once you engage the mouse-camera, you gotta stick with it because the game wont help you out with camera turning anymore. you gotta hit ijkl again to return to the 'key/controller camera', which is smoother and follows where the character moves.

im experimenting by mapping 1234567890 to my controller. when i hold down the RT, it changes to a new control config where i can map these 'quick access' keys :)
I just need to make the right trigger switch to a config where the 4 face buttons and another button do 1-5, and the left trigger does the same but from 6-0. Then i've got some more dynamic combat. im working it out though. its easy to config but im trying to make it comfy :)

Yes, you can rebind *some* keys to your liking, as long as they're not listed under "Locked Keys" in the keyboard configuration menu. But every time you start the game, it will revert back to the default keys (so annoying) until you open up the keyboard config menu again. Your settings are saved from before so you don't have to change anything but you still have to open up the config menu to remind the game you changed the controls. Once you do that, your bindings are in effect. My beef is why do you have to open up the keyboard config menu every time you start the game. And that's more times than you think actually, with the random crashes and all.

I put up with the awkward rebinding process so I could use different camera control keys, but rebinding them seemed to make me crash more. Since I let it go back to default and stayed with default, it doesn't crash as often, but I hate IJKL. Seriously.
