(posted below, to stop flamers who ignore the posts in this thread, and simply choose to think we're bashing the game to **** when we are not. If you dont think we should be free to observe aspects of the game, then leave this thread)

Guys, stop flaming me and other posters for no reason. Definitely not cool.
I'm just posting about something I found weird. I'm not being a huge whiner or anything, so you guys need to calm down and stop pretending we're crapping over a parade.

Do not attempt to paint us with a brush. We are not saying we detest ffxiv and your enjoyment simply because we noticed this. This is not even what the thread is about. Not cool guys, don't be like that.

We're having a harmless conversation here. What, we're not allowed to point out things we find weird in the game? You guys baffle me. We aren't even tearing the game apart, we're just discussing FFS.
Can we have a grown up discussion please?

So yes this copy-paste thing is strange, and feels strange. I only wished the areas would vary in certain areas more than they do. I was 15 minutes away from limsa lominsa once, but I was seeing the same formations that I saw 15 minutes away. THAT'S the main thing I find 'weak' about this. I don't mind copypasta, but I feel personally that the areas could vary a bit in their copypasta taste in certain areas. Know what I mean guys?

Seriously? I've seen the people on Sankaku complaining about this (they love bashing FF), but it's ridiculous.

Every MMO has copy/paste landscape. equipment, mobs, etc. FFXIV is no different from FFXI, WoW, LotRO, or take your pick.

I take my enjoyment from the gameplay and player-base, I don't obsess that every hill, tree, and bush is not 'unique'.

It's not that its not all unique, its that a strange rock formations (not just trees or shrubs or rocks, but entire formations), like those presented above, repeat identically over and over.
I'm not angry cause it's lazy or anything. I'm just commenting on the dreamlike bizzaro-effect it has when journeying. You will notice it eventually and you'll feel really weirded out.

This is not the same as a copy-paste dungeon, or trees being the same, or whatever. This is just really creepy. You come across the copy-paste tiles pretty quickly when youre running down a path. The video displays what I've experienced pretty well.

It's psychological, it why the guy in the video was saying he's freaking out, because you DO start to feel like you're in some kind of looping dream when you notice these 'copy pasta' formations.

Is there any game in existence where every single piece of terrain is unique? It seems bad when you fast forward to every instance then reshow it from various angles to make it seem more common, but meh. Where there is internets, there be trolls.

And what is with the term copy "pasta'd"? I just hate buzz words. It's like smackasses who say "Web 2.0". Ooooo, you use Facebook and a Twitter no one reads, you're so technologically advanced....

Seriously wrong use of that term... 'Uncanny valley' effect basically is "the more realistic/lifelike artificial characters (graphics, puppets, robots etc..) become, the more creepy they tend to appear."

Well in WoW, pretty much every cave was one of 3, maybe 4 layouts, just different schemes, snow, fire, ect.

So seeing a few hills that are the same wont bother me much.

It's not really "copy and paste". It's tiles. All developers have 3d tiles they use for terrain, just like tilesets were used in the past to build 2d games. When you play FFVI do you go "WTF the grass just repeats itself over and over, they copy and pasted this *$&@!"? To see identical pieces of terrain in more than one spot, rotated or in the same position, is completely normal. You know how long it would take to make an open world game if it wasn't done this way?

Also have you ever used an editing tool for a 3d game for making your own content, like in Oblivion? That's the same kind of tool devs use to make maps.

I bet 90% of all these people are going to get the game within the next year. If they don't get the game then I'm not really sure why they are complaining to begin with.

If you don't want to play then don't waste everyone's time by complaining about everything. If you do want to play then I hope some rocks that look the same don't scar your fragile little mind.

Yah...

Copy/pasted terrain is nothing new. That being said, I did have to admit when I was exploring around the different outside zones, I did frown a bit when I noticed even on the mini-map just how much of it was identical.

It was really driven home to me when I was following the paths in both the LL zone and the zone surrounding Jeuno v2.0, Ishguard.

All the same, the zones are still quite beautiful, the scenery is great, and so I'm willing to overlook it for the most part. I do sort of wish they wouldn't have made it as obvious as they did. haha.

For me little areas that are the same are fine, its just as long as there are enough unique things around to make up for it. Which i think XIV has done a good job of so far. The areas outside of Limsa maybe a little lacking but Gridania is fine imo, ive enjoyed exploring the jungle-ish area.

Around Ul'dah they have those groups of stalagmites in squares that I noticed were all the same but sometimes rotated and it doesn't bother me at all. With the different areas they are put in, too, I probably wouldn't have noticed they were the same if I hadn't looked at my minimap so closely.

Some of this stuff is obvious when you're looking for it but I never even noticed because I was enjoying the rest of the game.

Wasn't flaming. I was just making a point that if some plans to play the game then by all means point out problems and such to help the game, Just don't sit around all day picking it apart because 1) you have nothing better to do or 2) you fear that your game of preference might be hurt by this release.

Nothing from me was aimed directly at you, was nothing more than a blanket statement.

Wow that video was really stupid. Ofcourse the terrain is copy pasted. Thats how you save memory so you can have huge expansive worlds. If they had to model every rock, hill, slope and tree in the game seperatley the game would require a PC-farm to be able to handle all the data. What is he gonna complain of next? that every raindrop isn't an individually modelled object with perfect physics? Re-use is something that is actually encouraged in videogame development and programming since it saves time and resources.

The only way to get terrain that has no reocurring elements is to procedurally generate it which doesn't work very well when multiple people kind of expect to be playing in the same landscape.

Two players on the same procedurally generated map:
Player 1: "Lets meet in the cave by the river?"
Player 2: "urh... what river? im in a desert"

I imagine most people don't mind stuff being copy and pasted but seeing the same thing 3-4 times in a row, a few minutes apart, just kills immersion. I think SE could have done a better job with the layout than this.

It's more of a stylistic issue than a technical one. Nobody is saying this is 'SUPER DUPER game breakering!'
We're just saying 'hey look, this is how SE chose to do copypasta in ffxiv.'

We understand the purpose of copypasta. This isn't a total botch job, nor does it totally ruin anything. It's just kind of sloppily done compared to other efforts I've seen in other games You all need to take a deep breath and stop thinking we're making a big huge deal out of this -.-

its not the point that you brought it up for a discussion. The reaction is because this is not the 1st time it has been brought up and always leads to a "Square is lazy look at the maps" and "FFXIV is gonna suck I canceled my Preorder" posts.

yes all games use tile-sets for time saving and in some cases it even helps the game run smoother (less assets to load).

in most cases people will not even notice all of the copied assets unless someone points them out. Case in point http://www.todayifoundout.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/today-i-found-out-mario.jpg

I'm not calling you or anyone out, I'm not flaming you on your opinion, I'm jut explaining the reason for the comunity's reaction to some of the criticism that square is getting.

I don't think the rock will move out of frame before you can turn your name off and snap the picture :)

I've also got a bit of a 'problem' with the generic zones. I liked how in xi and other mmos, the zones change wildly. You're never in the same place for very long.
In xiv, the opening zone is huge, which is cool, but there's not much to see but more of the same. the WAY se used copypasta doesnt help this. they could've helped make the zones feel more varied. as it is now, you could be 15 minutes away from the city, and not know it.

notice: i wont respond to anyone getting 'angry' or 'defensive' over this post. Suck it up. Plus, I like ffxiv. this is just something i noticed. as an artist, it's within my interests

as a modder for years in both WoW and FFXI (wows modding is limited fyi)
i deffinatetly vouch for SE being lazy as compared to SOME MMOs when it comes to tiling and copying turrain.

the terrain in ffxi can be viewed in 3dsmax so you can see every detail. WoWs environments are the ONLY aesthitics i like in that game. im sorry but yeah FF14s terrain is waaaay more copy pasted than WoWs by far.
all MMOs do it, it only makes sense without having to be god and doing it all in 6 days and having a tv dinner on the 7th.
But when one powerful company has 5 terrain formations to use while most other MMOs have.... oh idk, i think i read the average was like 10+ formations, then yeah it looks lazy to me.

as for tiling, i dont blame anyone for not wanting to mod a zone in ffxi, i modded several zones and they. are. a. bich. to re tile.
WoWs, grenada espada and lineage II zones were tiled ALOT more intelligently, the tiles never overlapped themselves which allowed for a more precise custimazation. tiling is thrown all over the fuggen place in 11.

I was kinda skeptical when I read the sankaku article a couple weeks back, but since then I've played in Gridania for quite a while and noticed that a lot of areas are copied. I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared much had I not seen the article earlier, but I had to stop myself and go "Wasn't I just here? Did I go in a circle?" and check my map to make sure.

Welp, it's not like it's that big of a deal, but it is pretty obvious that it is there.

This kind of thing doesn't really bother me when it's something like a tree or a bush or a rock. I don't even really notice. It gets to me when it's a complete dungeon or cave (though FFXIV is guilty of this too). That's one thing that really bothered me about WoW: if you'd seen one multi-leveled cave stronghold of a humanoid mob in the middle of a forest, you'd seen them all.

One of my biggest pet peeves with WoW is the 500 caves in the game with the exact same setup, that's a lot worse than what I see in FFXIV now. WoW's creators were too lazy to even make higher polygon models in an age where it was completely possible, don't give me that "cartoony" crap, there are other cartoony games that look way better. And if you say when WoW came out they couldn't do better at that time, here are some screenshots from other MMOs released at the same time or earlier:

All of those, I think look better than this:

It IS lazy. It's lazy in WoW and it's lazy here too. Did you also realize that all the borders between sections of zones are cutpasted as well? Maybe I'm biased from my background in FPS mapping, but I've never reused entire sections of maps like that. 3 or 4 instances in the entire world of an uninteresting hill is fine. Zone lines and large rock formations in the middle of a meadow are not uninteresting hills. In fact, this and WoW's caves are the only times I've ever noticed this sort of thing without being told. It's really, really obvious and it does weird you out.

But did you also notice that most of the zones also have many entirely unique areas? Go look, there's a lot of them. They're pretty cool. It sometimes seems like there was one inspired level designer, who made a whole lot of neat terrain features, then some temp was hired to fill in the parts in between. Think of the cutpasted crap as just something to walk on until you get back to the stuff the cool guy made.

It's not gonna make me cancel my pre-order.

I agree with this, as long as theres enough interesting stuff to go along with the few re-used bits of terrain, im fine with it.

One thing Blizzard doesnt do is cutting edge graphics, they cater to the masses, they want the most popular games so they always purposely tone down the polygon count and stuff.

I wonder if the copy paste in all these games is due to hardware limitations? It could mean the difference between needing a 1GB card and a 1.5GB card??

FPS's are usually much smaller scale mapwise than an MMO. Most are very streamlined, not a lot of exploration. There are some exceptions like Crytek's games, which I'm sure have these "copy paste" parts in areas, I've just never looked for them. I don't like how they did zone lines though, because they made them all squiggly paths showing that it's loading the next area as you run through it. Hate to reference WoW, but it had better seamless transition.

I have noticed the unique areas as well. I like this a lot, and I've also found many good grinding spots in unique areas. I think seeing the repetitive landscape and then running into a more unique area makes it seem that much better when you find one.

And what is with the term copy "pasta'd"? I just hate buzz words. It's like smackasses who say "Web 2.0". Ooooo, you use Facebook and a Twitter no one reads, you're so technologically advanced....

You have lost most of your credit. :( You obviously need to stay inside more. If you're going to call this a buzz word, please go back at least 2 years and tell me to stop using it then.

Nah bro, those color pallets are way too bland. Couldn't they use something more vibrant. I'm not talking cartoony but still. I'm an artist in real life so it saddens me to see such bland color schemes.

in FF's defense, WoW caves for example have a general shape as well. some more than others but generally there's 3-4 "patterns" for caves copied over and over.

...and taverns..and indoor layouts...and docks...and trees...WoW reuses a lot in many places.

so nothing new

You do realize however that WoW has 10x the trees, caves, and taverns. It is therefor almost unnoticeable whereas in smaller games with less to look at such as FFXIV it's almost impossible not to notice.

I just can't believe how much usage this garbage takes out of my system. Slowing down $1200+ PCs.

Except they don't look the same. Not really sure how that link does anything other than contradict your point.

Classic SE!

If instead of taking the time to put together the entire video series, why aren't they fixing the game to make it less ****** by release?

It would be nice to even hear what they're planning on doing to make this game better, even if it's not going to be done by release. With every passing day my delusions of SE making a new modern MMO that's actually fun and exciting to play are fading. At least it set a fire under me to build a new PC, which pretty happy with. I think it's that last bit of hope that's keeping me on these forums, hoping to hear some good news about SE getting their heads out from the depths of their arrogant asses; perhaps realizing that their archaic ways that worked with FFXI will only bring a slow death to their "next gen" MMO. They got away with it in FFXI because many people were fresh to the MMO scene or coming from older grindy games like EQ. I honestly don't know what drove them to develop something so outdated. It's like they took all the negative aspects of FFXI and mixed them with a new system that feels worse than games released 10 years ago. Words cannot express my disappointment in this game. I spent so many years looking forward to it, and it's hard to come to the realization that it just will not ever be what I hoped for. I don't care about the "beta" lag, bugs, etc. It's the game itself and the direction SE has stated they're taking it. The UI will speed up, the latency will improve, and there will be more places to go; but the fundamental system that the game is build around will not change. It really sucks, even if only for me.
