With the big uproar about much needed improvements to the mouse & keyboard controls, the flaws with using a controller haven't been talked about as much. For the most part the controller works great with this game, but there are a few obvious concerns to bring up here. Things the controller can't do, making you use the mouse or keyboard. Especially if you consider the game being meant for PS3 as well, this presents a problem. For all of the following notes, maybe I just haven't figured out how to do them with the controller, so if you have please chime in!

1. Chat Log - This is a problem across the board regardless of your method of control. Definitely needs improvement. But I can't find any way to scroll the chat log with the controller. Forcing me to use the mouse and then of course even then it's really annoying. Trying not to stray too far off the controller topic here, but if you send me a /tell and it gets scrolled up too quickly, you may be out of luck. It's not a very friendly chat log to begin with and me having to switch to the mouse to even use it? Yeah, I'm probably gonna ignore it.

2. Use Item - Yeah, apparently there's a "Use Item" window in this game. I had no idea this existed until recently, but if you click on that little bag of the 4 little icons in the bottom corner of the screen it brings it up. Again, need the mouse or keyboard to do it. (It's "U" on the keyboard by the way) This is where you'd eat food, drink potions, etc. So that would be a handy thing to have access to.

Now with both of these, there could be a solution already in place that just hasn't been fully implemented. With the controller setup there's a button I rarely use now that, in the config, is labeled as "View status effects" which was pretty useless before. Now it at least brings you to your status effects up top and you can then scroll through them with the d-pad. So maybe the plan is to use that button to also jump you to those little icons in the bottom right and the chat log? Would be nice, and if so this is a useless thread.

Though with release day quickly approaching, and very little talk about it I figured I'd bring it up. Just in case there was a sense of "Oh controller users have it made, there's no issues there at all" going on. They're not game-breaking problems, but definitely worth mentioning I think...

Also, is there anything I'm missing?

I agree. There are some very annoying aspects of the controller (or rather lack of aspects). The inability to select the chat log and scroll through it is the biggest inconvenience, imo. In a close second is the Use Item menu issue. This seems like an important menu that will need to be opened quickly in the middle of battle. But like you said, maybe there are fixes planned. I for one try to stray from complaining too much before I see their finished product (frankly I find complaining about a beta product rather annoying and almost skipped this thread after I read a few lines but its actually valid and only mildly complaining =P)

Some problems in this game I just think to myself "why don't they just do it like XI." lol. The controller is one of those issues that provokes that thought. The only thing kind of awkward about XI's controller layout was transition between controlling sh*t and chatting... but that's just an inherent problem with the controller.

Funny how that seems to be something people say about a lot of things in the game.

Huh? First, I'd be one of the XI elitists in that case....second, I was agreeing with him...third, huh?

Yeah... huh? My only point was that there are some things that worked in XI that don't work in XIV... and I am a little confused as to why that is... thats all.

Xi had the triangle/Y button, which put you into 'interact with your UI elements' mode. THIS is what was good about the XI UI.
XIV needs this too. They can replace the 'view status effects" button, with a button that lets you scroll from chat window to status effect area (and then press 'A/X' to 'interact' with it - for the chat window, youd be able to scroll the chat window up and down, and change chat tabs left ot right, just like the XI chat window).

I think that's the best course of action :)

Unless you play a lot of console games, which I don't, I don't think you are really going to get a great grasp of playing with the controller. I loved the XI keyboard setup, would care less about the mouse if the keyboard worked the same as it does in XI. Because of the flaws with the current keyboard/mouse, I've been using an xbox controller... and yes it has made things better, but there are things it just can't do. The chat, the use item, and big one I am finding for me now is fluid targeting. With there being groups of mobs here, you need to be able to target really fast and I can't... by the time i get something deselected, try tabbing over to the next correct target, i've been hit like 3-4 times. I just can;t get a grasp of it ><

Other thing is selecting abilities to use... playing archer and "refill" is auto set to action 2... having to scroll left/right through abilities (then up and down when you accidentally hit up or down...) to get to the right ability is so slow, when I can just hit the corresponding number on the keyboard. It just really feels like they mashed two or three keyboard/controller setups together and hoped for the best. I don't see why there shouldn;t be a selectable XI keyboard vs. wsad keyboard or controller setup. seems simple enough to me, but dunno :/

Good call on the targeting...doing leves last night with 7-8 man parties was a mess trying to target...
I've also been too lazy to set up macros so far on that, maybe that can be improved...

/item "Potion" <me>

For controller play in FFXI I just had a row of item macros. Rarely used. But you need to access it in a hurry when the time comes.

Yes, targeting is a total mess no matter what control scheme you're using. Even w/ a mouse, clicking moving targets in a crowd is difficult.
Macros will have to be used to target hostiles, which we're used to from ffxi so it's not the BIGGEST deal.

And hte little item window is convenient, but not totally important either. Maybe they can implement it into the 'emotes/partyalert/enemyalert' window as a 4th tab.

Also there doesn't seem to be a way to switch AoE on or off with the controller. If anyone knows a way let me know! :)

The "emote/stack commands" button does this on the controller (not for pc, only the controller version of this key function). So if you bind it to 'start', press 'start' when the aoe button pops up to toggle it on and off.

1. I'm too lazy to log in to try it, but doesn't hitting 'space bar' take you directly to the chat box?

2. Yeah this is a problem.

I really have come to like the controller, but if typing is going to be a real pain then I might as well just use keyboard only and invest in a diNovo or something...

we're talking about scrolling through the chat box, not typing. Thats' why we're talking about the scrolling..

checking a /tell or damage out whatever requires you to grab your mouse. Thats' the problem. SE will hopefully fix this.

Gah, I didn't read it right.

Anyway there are chat filters and in FFXI I had most of them turned on to alleviate lots of scrolling, especially while I was NIN tanking. Right now as it stands EVERYTHING shows up in the chat log and it is annoying.

But I agree it should be fixed.
