Correct me if i'm wrong... but the CE version gets the Onion Helm and the Standard edition gets the goggles/glasses. Since GameCrazy went belly up... i have no choice but to shop where the blokes i know and trust went, at least when it comes to telling me about upcoming games.

GameStop is advertising the following...

"Pre-order Final Fantasy XIV Collector's Edition for the PC and receive the Onion Helm in-game item. Available online and in-store while supplies last."

As i understood it, the onion helm comes with every CE and in no way requires a pre-order through gamestop. am i wrong?

Where does it say "Only available through Gamestop"?

Hmm, that is kind of sneaky on their part because they sometimes have those "Gamestop exclusive" preorder bonuses...I think they do anyway. That's probably what you were thinking too. It's not a "gamestop only" deal though...
CE-Onion Helm
SE-Goggles

They are not GameStop exclusive, but they ARE preorder exclusive, per finalfantasyxiv.com

They are not talking about the Onion Helm. They are talking about the CE. See in sentence one, the subject is "you," the verb is to "pre-order," and the direct object is the "CE." In sentence two, which is not even a sentence in the classical sense but rather a clause, the understood subject is now the "CE" and the understood verb is "is/are."

Should probably read something like this,
"Pre-order your copy of Final Fantasy XIV collector's Edition for the PC today and receive the Onion Helm in-game item. The Collector's Edition is available online and in-store while supplies last."

You should sue. Contact a lawyer quick, before the game is released! I think your sob "game crazy" story will really get some tears and get you a ton of money!

Gamestops around me tend to imply that pre-order incentives are theirs when they really aren't. It doesn't bother me too much because I know when they are or aren't, they charge the same price as anyone else anyways, and gamestop's business model relies on pre-order sales.

Hints - thank you for your contribution to a serious observation... I posted because it happens a lot with them - and it gets taken for granted.

no where near a sob story... game crazy had every console out in the floor and would open new game boxes to try a game if you weren't sure about your purchase - peace if mind when spending upwards of $80 per game is no sob story... merely good consumerism.

and the gamestop ad would have been fine had they not also taken out the onion helm as part of the "what's included" list for the collectors edition.

I don't know if you get the onion helm with any CE, or just pre-ordered copies. I think its just on pre-orders.

You are welcome, I hope you get a lot of money.

While you are out suing Gamestop, go ahead and add Amazon to the lawsuit.

What is better to order?

Goggles let you skill faster, and helm lets you recover from death faster. I find after dying in a guildleve that by the time I walk back to where they spawned, it's only a minute to recover left :)

I know it comes with nifty swag/trinkets and a token. But what really is the better deal???

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

Ignoring everything else the CE offers, the google seems like the better deal. Primarily because the standard edition is 20 dollars cheaper. Second, from what I can understand you would have to be wearing the Onion Helm when you die in order to get the bonus and that thing is hideous on anyone other than Lalafells. The goggles are nice looking and the bonus seems more useful.

So... If you care only for the pre order bonuses and nothing else, I'd go with the goggles.

Remember though that the goggles effect will only have a short lifetime before they stop working. Whether it's time related, total exp bonus earned related, or max level related, will have to be seen. But it's been said that the effect will not be permanent.

I could be wrong and I'm not really in the mood to go tracking down the numerous articles SE put out about the in game items. But I'm fairly sure they've said the difference is the onion helm will last forever. The goggles have charges on them than when they are used up, they no longer have a use other than vanity. I believe there is one interview where it was said that the goggles are just a small bonus to pre orders who didn't want/too cheap to put out another 25$ to be able to catch up with CE folks.

Um, when I read that I simply read it as the "CE will be available only while supplies last" ... isn't that the point? Also, if your trying to diss a retailer for trying to sound special about their products...have you ever seen one recommend you do to another store? Gamestop wants you to buy from Gamestop, Amazon wants you to buy from Amazon, it doesn't matter what store it is they are going to advertise themselves.

The helm has a life span as well, just not an explicit one. I don't expect the stats on the helm will be all that phenomenal, meaning once you've raised your physical level a bit and progressed gear-wise, having the helm equipped on the off chance you might die will be a sub-par alternative to having head gear with better stats equipped for performance.

Or you just can set a macro to equip the helm when your HP drops below 10% :P

Are you all high? Not anywhere in that sentence does it imply that the helm is Gamestop ONLY. It doesn't even mention the word Gamestop anywhere. It is TRUE that if you purchase it from them you will get the helm, but it doesn't anywhere even remotely imply that you can't get the same item elsewhere.

Also, it is not misleading to say while supplies last, because it's true (there's only a certain amount of CE being made) and nowhere in there does it still imply that it's Gamestop only. I pre-ordered mine from Amazon.com and it says exactly the same sentence ... sounds to me like SE gave them the sentence to say on their site. So if you're going to be mad at anyone, be mad at SE.

Also, to the person that mentions that the Goggles are better and you save $20 -- also remember that CE gets to start playing the game 8 days before standard edition .... so that may be worth the extra $20 anyways, not to mention the helmet that reduces your rez sickness debuff (which blows).

Amazon Preorder shows that you will recieve the Helm, so all re-orders get it.

And correct me if im wrong, but the CE gets 30 days free, and the SE does not, so thats a $13 value in itself. Along with the token, and the other bonus stuff you get, why would you not get the CE?

Strange in the small print it says all new versions of the game get free 30 days, however both on the official site and amazon, ect. it shows that a CE bonus is 30 days of free gameplay(Bonus #6 on official to be exact), and the SE does not mention it whatsoever as a feature. Why add it only to the CE if both get it?

Isn't that kind of false advertising? I mean its not really a bonus if both get it.

Is that the buddy pass? CE comes with a free 30 day trial for someone else.

I think you all misunderstand what "False Advertising" is. Them NOT stating something is NOT False Advertising. If they were to state something that were incorrect (for instance, IF they said you DO get 30 days, and then you didn't) that would be false advertising.

What they are doing is intentionally not stating ALL the perks you get for the standard edition simply to try to boost the sales of their collector's edition. Sure, I'd agree this may be a little misleading, but is perfectly normal in the business world and that's why you should always read what you're buying several times before hitting that "Buy" button. Also, if you're a little confused, do some research. Don't just come over with some sob story about how you feel like so-and-so company is evil because of their sales tactics, because frankly I'd have to ask myself who's the bigger idiot: the company that is trying to boost their sales, or the person that didn't know what he or she was buying (refer to iPhone 4).

(by-the-way ... the free 30 days is clearly stated on both versions of the game, I just checked on several websites)

Is there a thread with more info on bonus items? I read somewhere anyone else you link to the account for a short time get the bonus item too like the mog satchel did. This thread made the Onion helmet seem even better.

BEDEMIR: Quiet, quiet. Quiet! There are ways of telling whether
[GameStop] is a witch.
CROWD: Are there? What are they?
BEDEMIR: Tell me, what do you do with witches?
VILLAGER #2: Burn!
CROWD: Burn, burn them up!
BEDEMIR: And what do you burn apart from witches?
VILLAGER #1: More witches!
VILLAGER #2: Wood!
BEDEMIR: So, why do witches burn?
[pause]
VILLAGER #3: B--... 'cause they're made of wood...?
BEDEMIR: Good!
CROWD: Oh yeah, yeah...
BEDEMIR: So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER #1: Build a bridge out of her.
BEDEMIR: Aah, but can you not also build bridges out of stone?
VILLAGER #2: Oh, yeah.
BEDEMIR: Does wood sink in water?
VILLAGER #1: No, no.
VILLAGER #2: It floats! It floats!
VILLAGER #1: Throw her into the pond!
CROWD: The pond!
BEDEMIR: What also floats in water?
VILLAGER #1: Bread!
VILLAGER #2: Apples!
VILLAGER #3: Very small rocks!
VILLAGER #1: Cider!
VILLAGER #2: Great gravy!
VILLAGER #1: Cherries!
VILLAGER #2: Mud!
VILLAGER #3: Churches -- churches!
VILLAGER #2: Lead -- lead!
ARTHUR: A duck.
CROWD: Oooh.
BEDEMIR: Exactly! So, logically...,
VILLAGER #1: If... she.. weighs the same as a duck, she's made of wood.
BEDEMIR: And therefore--?
VILLAGER #1: A witch!
CROWD: A witch!

I love witch hunts!
