Lag or micro stuttering?Follow

Lately when I play Final Fantasy 14, usually when I'm around the towns or inside it I will get this slight stuttering or lag every 5 or 10 seconds on my character. What I am trying to figure out if it is actual lag or my system and might be micro stuttering. Here are a few notes:

1. During instances when you are by yourself, I get zero lag and it seems to run fine.

2. This issue doesn't always occur everyday in the beta, it has only happened a little more then half the time during the week

3. All of my other video games on the PC have no issues like micro stuttering or anything similar

4. I have tried other servers during the time it does it and they all seem to do the same thing in that duration of time.

Here are my specs for my PC:

CPU: 3.2ghz Intel Core I7-960 8MB Cache Quad Core
Heatsink/Fan - Thermaltake CL - P0466 SpinQ CPU Cooler fan/heatsink
Motherboard - ASUS P6X58D Premium (Intel X58, 3xPCI-E, 8xSATA2, 6xDDR3, 1394)
Memory - 6GB PC3 12800 DDR3 1600mhz
HD - 500 GB 16mb cache ATA300
CD - 22x LG SATA Dual Layer
Video - 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5870
OS - Windows 7 Home
Power Supply - 860w Antec Truepower Quattro
Case fan - 2x 120mm Case fan

The only other thing I wanted to add if it was me, was that someone was saying it could be micro stuttering because I have a newer Radeon ATI card and Square was having issues with them and lag in the beta. But I have tried to ask people in the game and most people wont answer me if they are getting any lag or not at the time. :( Other then that, I didn't even know if this 'micro stuttering' could happen even though I am only using one video card and am not running anything else. I have also updated all my drivers to be sure. So in the end, is ANYONE at all getting this issue from time to time in the beta, where you stutter, or lag every 5 to 10 seconds sometimes when inside the town in FF14? Thank you!

I talk about it here:

Tell me if that's what you're experiencing. A user posted about how Nvidia is workign on a fix. But this is strange, because youre using ATI.

Check my video - is that the kind of stuttering you experience?
(from that thread)

Stuttering when in most areas, but not due to gpu or cpu load. Perhaps network load? Makes no sense why network load would cause graphical hitching, however. This is the cause for eyestrain after only 2 hours of playtime that many players experience. Badly coded engine is to blame.

Well..

If I say it could be your HDD (>...> Will you believe me?

If you notice, your HDD lights should be lighted up like mad during the stuttering

It's a coding issue on SE's side. It could be the HDD but we're using fast HDD's so there's nothing we can do about it. We won't buy a SSD for the slight chance it might 'fix' this. Because chances are, it won't. Bad coding can't be fixed user-side.

Yes! Directorcobbs that is exactly what is happening to me (the youtube video), I get that stuttering every 10 seconds or so. So that isn't micro stuttering then, and it's an issue from square's side? Now I'm excited, I at least know other people are experiencing it. >_<

Plus we have different specs, so it's got nothing to do with our setups. It's just badness on square's side. It may also be driver-related. Nvidia said they're making a driver fix so *shrug* we'll see if it helps

Eh, I'm just bummed because I got a brand new computer and if they don't fix that by release time I probably wont bother playing it on here and just wait for the PS3 version. ~_~ But hopefully something will happen.

I think it's mostly lag caused by character models being rapidly called/loaded into existence. I played the first three days on my WD500gb caviar blue, then moved the game over to my Corsair F40 SSD after it came in. Stuttering gone.

It's still no excuse though. FFXI had the exact same issue for me for the longest time. You'd think by now they would figure out how to make the game load models without pausing for every access to the HDD. You can feel this pronounced when taking a screenshot (press/hold screenlock then press print screen key).

screenshots are no problem for me. No stuttering.
It isn't an HDD issue because nvidia has recognized it and such. Also, stuttering continues even after things have been loaded. Camps stutter, even after you load all the models in. A building in a city, like a guild building, will stutter even after loading everything in.

I understand why you'd think it's the HDD, because if you read the thread I linked to, I thought it was the HDD too. It may even be PARTLY hdd-based, but it doesn't explain all the stuttering.
It's the way SE coded the game, definitely, we can agree on that.

One thing I've been curious about is when I boot up Windows 7, it says that no HD is detected. Yet when I use my computer it can find the C drive and it works just fine. So I asked Ecollegepc via E-mail and they told me that this particular motherboard or something doesn't have to read it from the HD. Does this sound right? Or could this possibly be the issue to my problem? I'm starting to wonder if I should invest in a SSD drive just to try it. :(

Nobody here has that problem so thats a basic computer problem that you should fix, not ffxiv related..

Well I decided to E-mail Square and see if I can get some support for this, this is what I wrote:

I am currently in the open beta test for Final Fantasy 14, and the issue I am having is that 90% of the time when I am running (Usually in the towns) every 5 to 10 seconds my character will stutter, or rubber band a bit. I thought this was due to lag but I spoke to a number of people with different CPU set ups and they are not experiencing this. On the other hand, I have found a minority that is encountering this micro-stuttering issue in the game. Here are my specs for my computer:

CPU: 3.2ghz Intel Core I7-960 8MB Cache Quad Core
Heatsink/Fan - Thermaltake CL - P0466 SpinQ CPU Cooler fan/heatsink
Motherboard - ASUS P6X58D Premium (Intel X58, 3xPCI-E, 8xSATA2, 6xDDR3, 1394)
Memory - 6GB PC3 12800 DDR3 1600mhz
HD - 500 GB 16mb cache ATA300
CD - 22x LG SATA Dual Layer
Video - 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5870
OS - Windows 7 Home
Power Supply - 860w Antec Truepower Quattro
Case fan - 2x 120mm Case fan

I have updated my drivers, and the computer is only a week old. No other video games for the PC I have tried is having this issue. I have also tried changing settings, such as vertical syncing, depth of field, AA, etc and it doesn't seem to help. I have also tried other servers to see if that was the problem and it doesn't seem so.

I would just like to know if this is an issue that Square has noticed and will be corrected in the official version of Final Fantasy 14. Once again, the problem that I am having is that I will be running, usually in any towns, and every 5 to 10 seconds my character will kind of stutter or lag for a second, then stop and go smooth again. Thank you for your support!

Great move, I tried contacting when OB started but haven't gotten a response. Tell me how it goes:)

Well I got a reply back from Square this evening, and it was basically an auto-Email saying that they will not answer any of my questions because I was not in the closed Beta. So I guess the only answer to that is if someone actually has access to the beta forums since all open beta testers cant go in, to check to see if anyone else has this issue or if Square is resolving or looking into it.

Other then that I think I give up. I've tried everything I can think of and other then FF14, my new PC works amazing on all the rest of the PC games I've tried. :( Just makes me sad because if this isn't fixed for me I guess I'll be trying it on the PS3.
