Improved updater?Follow

Has anyone else not had to resort to torrents with the more recent patches?

I haven't changed any settings on my end, but I've noticed that the last 3 patches have downloaded like a normal torrent, as opposed to the stop and go game of the old updater.

I've never really had much trouble downloading updates, but I'm usually way behind the group when it comes to downloading them. They've also been very small patches lately - a few MB at best.

I was thinking that might be the reason, however earlier on I saw multiple times that <10MB patches would 'freeze' in the updater.

Here's a guess.

I think the updater has some built-in time where you are not downloading but just helping others download. For a couple of downloads, this occured at 94.6% and 94.8%. You would just sit there for an hour with 0 download and ~40 upload. Most people got sick of this and found a direct download.

Now, I'm noticing that you just sit at 0% for awhile before it kicks in. Somehow, sitting at 0% is easier than sitting at 94.6%. People just start it and walk away, rather than staring at 94.6% because it seems they are almost done.

I'm guessing that the time you are just helping others has been moved to the beginning of each download, where it is less noticable.

On my end, it improved from 0k/s to 50k/s and stalls halfway through the download.

They definitely tweaked it. The biggest improvement I have noticed is that it doesn't run my CPU at 95 to 100%. I know others experienced this also. It used to be very CPU taxing which is completely uncalled for from a client updater. It now uses hardly any CPU usage to run.

The patches since the 10th or 11th (can't remember which day it was) seemed to offer a huge improvement.

I have always had to use megauploads or other torrent links previously, but this weekend I was able to just click on the official client installer and installs took less than a minute each time. I was seeing speeds of over 430 kb/s.
