Posting this on behalf of a friend of mine, because we haven't been able to figure it out and nobody responded to his post on whatever forum he posted it on.

I am having a problem with the way the FFXIV beta displays on my screen. I have updated my drivers and directx and it has still not solved the problem. I have also been searching these forums for help and have yet to find a solution. I am including a picture of what I am dealing with. Notice how some of the text is cut off and there are black bars on the right and bottom of the screen. It is similar in the game as well and on the beta start screen. The text is missing on all buttons and is cut off on some parts in the game. Here are my specs:

video card: NVIDIA GeForce gtx 260
processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
OS: Windows XP 32 bit
RAM: 2 gigs

If anyone has a recommendation or if technical support could please give me any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for the time.

Here's the picture he included.

If I had to guess, I'd say some of the data files were somehow corrupted?

As much as it sucks, I'd consider re-installing and see if that doesn't fix it.

what kind of fixes have you guys tried? Other than graphic card drivers and directx.

It could be faulty game files. Did he try to reinstall the game?. If he doesn't have the install files and it would take a while for him to download em, copy your Squareunix folder (under c:/program files) to a external drive and copy it onto his computer.

Just like every other MMO you actually do not need to have the game installed for it to run.

A simple copy/paste game folder to anywhere on the computer and then run the .exe should work

If he's not having any issues running other games I would guess it's the beta client having issues

He's uninstalled and reinstalled the game completely, twice. Error persists.

Hmm. A while ago, a poster here pointed out that the login interface was based off of Internet Explorer's security settings. People who had their security set to "High" weren't getting the software keyboard icons and their "Login" button was nonfunctional. Maybe this is somehow related? Just guessing at this point. This is a weird one.

Why would anyone want to base any program's functionality on IE?

EDIT: I was referring to gaming specifically, but yeah...

I'm not sure if the patcher works like this, but the login program is basically an IE window.

He doesn't have the problems at the login screen, it's in the version updater and in-game. The text on roughly the bottom half of the screen does not appear because of the odd "stretching" effect. Other games work perfectly fine, it's only FFXIV that he has issues on.

Fair, I'll let him know to try that out.

Based on the SS it's the only thing out of the normal. Aside from that maybe try using the nvcleaner to completely wipe out any settings and remnants of the driver and then reinstall the latest signed drivers.

It could be monkeying with the DPI settings in XP. XP doesn't handle DPI scaling well at all, 7 does a better job but it's still shoddy. If removing the skinning program doesn't work, you might also have him try checking the DPI setting under Display Properties, Advanced, General. I believe 96 DPI is the standard, and is what he should be running the game on.

It's an alienware, so the classic XP theme has been replaced with an alienware-styled theme. Also, the classic windows theme doesn't work at all. He tried changing to the standard XP (alienware altered) theme, and it did improve slightly. More text was visible, but it still wasn't resolved. It seems to be going in the right direction though. Just a matter of resetting or removing the alienware theme and bringing back the default and classic ones, for now.

Update: Uninstalling AlienGUIse (the alienware theme override) seems to have done the trick, thanks windexy that was exactly what we were looking for.

If he likes the theme software, he could just have a second account for FFXIV where that is disabled.

Adding this to the tech help tips part of my sticky. If you or your friend are able to, I'd post a Bug Report about this on the beta forums.

Made a bug report on the beta forums. Hopefully it should be an easy fix because he hasn't always had this problem. When we were in the closed beta he initially could run the game just fine, it was just after one particular patch when things went wrong and haven't been addressed since. At least for now this is an adequate solution.
