The force-field deal? Perhaps that's the cutscene version of the protect spell? = P
It doesn't look that cool in-game...

This.

Interesting. That's the first I've heard of that. Makes sense in the context of the trailer though, as the Hyur was an archer in the leve but you could see a huge greatsword on his back as he left at the very end.

yea at first i notice that too but then i put it off as his carrying all his skills equipment in his backpack lol

wow am i the only one that didnt like the movie and DO enjoy OB?

the main character was sooooo cliche in his bewilderment and just so happens to be the one random guy that gets wrapped up in everything that has nothing to do with him. It even turns out the entire movie is the cliche characters schizophrenic delusion. his friends were even sick of his sh*t.
the quality of the movie was awesome, but its mini story i thought was kind of rediculous and the NPCs were excessively happy go lucky and kitchy, i mean, arent there wars and battles going on that could kill them off at any given time? i wouldnt be all smiles about that.

but im having fun in OB and cant wait for release, but i deffinately will be skipping the movie on release.

To be honest I was quite disapointed at Summoner in FFXI. In my point of view, to really represent summons, aeons, GFs they need to be way larger that life and powerful. The problem with this is that there is no way you can balance a class which can avail of Summons and still make them be so powerful.

Actually if I'm getting the background information correctly there isn't really any war going on at the moment. The Garlean Empire have retreated 15 years ago after destroying Ala Mhigo. There is a few squirmishes with the local beastman but I wouldn't consider it as a wartime world. (so far)

Okay, I have now watched the Official Opening Movie several times now and have spent a little while trying to analyse different parts of it to get some meaning from it and just noting things that I enjoyed and general thoughts.

Part #1 -

At an Adventurers Guild and the main character is selecting Leves to try.

0:54 I like that almost-purr sound the miquo'te makes when she gets the drink. I wonder if it is milk

1:03 The accents of the Eleizen and Miqo'te make me laugh. I wonder who the voice actors are.

1:32 "Choose as you will _____. Our fate is in your hands " I think his name sounds like "Medvalion"? Any thoughts?

Part #2 -

1:54 When you see the main guy as the archer, I don't think it is nessesarily him. Someone mentioned Echo
Quote:
The Echo is a mysterious power which causes the souls of those touched by it to resonate with others. Of that power is born the ability to relive the other person's past experiences -- to see and feel them as though they were one's own.
Nothing is known of its origin or purpose. The task of learning its secrets falls to adventurers.

His party consists of an Elezen and a Miquote, So I think he is seeing a vision of a band of 4 consisting of a Lala conjurer, A Roegadyn Maraduer, An Elezen Gladiator and a Hyur Archer, of whom he is 'resonating' with

2:03 Is the lala running on water? Awesome.

2:07 the 'bubble spell' is the same from the LL opening Cutscene. Looking at all the Abilities 1-50 I can't see anything that resembles a 'barrier' spell parart from Shell/Protect. And I love the way she looks back at him.

2:45 the gladitor is using a healing spell - an example of cross class skills

2:50 the shared 'nod' I am assuming is the start of a Battle Regiment where 1 - the Gladiator does an attack that pins down or imobilises the emeny, the marauder uses a skill to knock over the enemy, the Conjurer uses a fire spell which combines with the Archer's attack (and as we all know Fire beats Plant).

Part #3 -

The aircrafts now sweep in, chasing a dragon. They may possibly be related to the Ishgards?
Quote:
[ Ishgard ]
The Knights of Ishgard are fighting a holy war with an ancient race of dragons, and are currently refusing contact with those they call ‘unbelievers.’

This brings up the question to me wether or not these dragons are evil or just misunderstood.

Though I must admit the dragon that flies over head looks a little ... odd? They do't seem to have limbs, only wings.
Dragon1 Dragon2 Dragon3

3:49 the second aircraft creashes into the pond where the Archer was and it appears he gets scooped up at this point, leaving his companions behind

4:20 -4:40 there seem to be 3 kinds of aircraft in these scenes. The smallest ones are the 'chimmney' like ones which seem to be fighter craft. There are larger brown ships with domed tops and columns on the side. For some reason I get the vibe that they are like silos and storage units? There is a strange black craft that looks slightly serpentine tapering down to a blade like appendage and may be defensive units. The largest is a big red ship which looks slightly dragon like. at 4:39 it almost looks like the side of a dragon's head with a mouth full of metal teeth, though at 4:48 when you can see most of the craft, it actually looks like a big red whale. They appear to all be on the same side fighting the small dragons

(P.S. once again a cardinal rule of Hollywood strikes in that there are a billion and one bullets/charges being fired and the main character isn't touched)

4:52 a large bolt of lightning streaks down from the sky and blasts one of the Silo-like craft. Then with quite a bit of awesomeness, Big Mummy Dragon peeks her head down from the clouds and sends another blue blast into the heart of the ship

5:06 Big Mummy winds her way down from the clouds and begins to encircle this big red ship. The shape of her makes me wonder if there is a connection between the Dragons and the Leviathan-creature from Limsa

5:13 VERY exciting scene to me. You see the 3 other companions PLUS CHOCOBO standing there as fire streams down from the sky. It is now evident that these aren't comets, but either bits of burning aircraft or flaming dragon bodies raining down. I think that this is the same scene that our characters witness in the Opening Cutscenes. So going back to the 'Echo' topic, it seems that for our storyline point of view, our characters all have a hint of Echo in them and they are all resonating in some way with this dragon battle.

5:30 Big Mummy starts to draw the big ship down from the skies to crash into a lake. This correlates to the place in Mor Dhona where the shipwreck with the dragon wrapped around it is.

5:53 a huge burst of green energy rises up from the ground and seems to kill the dragon and the wreckage. My thoughts are that this is aetherite, as it is described that the Gates and Nodes and what not are aetherite geyering up from veins underground. I think the crash landed ontop of one of these veins and the force kills the dragon and all other life on the ship

6:00 the expanding energy strikes the ship and the main character is flung off the ship (with a funny yell) and he begins to freefall down towards the open aetherite vent.

6:11 springing from the aether are some mysterious life forms, the first one some kind of beast-demon resembling Ifrit, the second a kind of golem-like creature. They then jettison off and you see more of these light-encased creature flying off somewhere. My thoughts are that the force of aethrite combined with dragon magic and whatever energies where in the ship and possibly those on the ship has combined to make monsters. These may possibly be the Bosses and Nefarious Monsters in the game.

Part #4

6:28 Main Character returns from the vision to the amusement of his companions

Oh and CREEPY SMIILE!!!!

6:56 He choses the Leve he got the vision on. I've zoomed in and tried to decipher the name of the Leve. I cam make out that it starts with R and I think it ends in lue, which makes me thing the word is "Revalue" though that doesn't make much sense with the picture displayed.

7:08 "Let us give the Bards something to sing about!" The main character is now hefting a big sword. Not sure if this means that there is another class out there that uses a 2-handed broadsword. In part 2 the Galdiator's sword is also linda large. The Eleizen has an axe, making him a Marauder. Unsure what the Miquo'te is. Perhaps a Pugilist?

If I could get hit by a car and then just respawn in front of a giant spinning crystal I think I'd be pretty happy go lucky too.

I'm not so sure they landed on a giant deposit of aethercite.

It looks like the blue beam is in intentional act from the dragon - like it's sacrificing itself/releasing something for a purpose.

I'm very excited to see what this story is about now. Can't wait.

Not saying that's bad, grabbing VAs from theater troupes is way, way better than their previous practice of just grabbing workers from their overseas offices.

More like grabing americans to put on dodgy accents, but I like it makes it feel more japanese like dubbed cartoons.

Ok, now that my excitement is accurately expressed...I thought it was cool that we saw all those little CGI pieces come together in such an epic way. Made me rethink the systems they have in place when the Hyur dropped all those leves on the table with his fellow adventurers. The 22nd cannot come soon enough!

You make some Great observations here. there is one part that i took to mean something entirely different though. The part where the dragon takes the ship down. I am inclined to believe that those beings coming out of the blue light were actually Guardian deity's. The blue light, if you noticed, kills the dragon (see dead dragon on top of crashed ship), which leads me to believe that there was divine intervention.

imo, a double/triple tech skill system would definitely encourage a lot grouping. XD

I don't think the "bubble spell" you mentioned is supposed to be conventional magic. When the Miqo'te uses it in the LL opening cutscene the people on deck say they've "never seen anything like it." An NPC also mentions the strangeness of it later on in LL, from what I recall. Which is unfortunate, because I think something like that would be awesome, even if it didn't keep out attacks completely, or it only held out very briefly.

Just to clarify something to you: the new CGI was basically to show us echoes which is a story element in FFXIV that allows you, the player, to relive some adventurer's life at some point in time buried in history - this was the "rediculous mini story" as you put it :P. Also, there is no reason for the adventurers to be stiff, because there is no wars going on at the time we start the game - basically "Adventuring" in Eorzea is a means to keep money flowing in the province (State, country, continent?? maybe continent), a means to a balanced economy...basically the adventurer's guild has different people (Eorzean NPCs) pitch them problems they need help with, offer a reward and I would assume pay them a portion - in turn the Adventurer's guild pitches it to the adventurers and the adventurer's take the jobs and finish them for a reward. Adventurer's interact with one another, money flows, etc. etc...its a story mechanic. Anyway, point is, there is no war when the game begins, so the adventurer's being cheery is the normal...well sort of, I didn't really like the cat :P.
