In addition to what was announced here today, we are also planning massively multiplayer battles.

There currently exist several class abilities which may have players scratching their heads as to how they are to be used. Many of these were designed with PVP in mind. While we cannot reveal much regarding PvP now, we have some exciting announcements planned for the near future.

At this point any PvP will be welcomed. I never got into FFXI PvP because it was very difficult to be where I needed to be at the right time, but I really hope PvP in FFXIV will be accessible and fun.

I haven't been following along with all things FFXIV throughout the year though I have been playing the beta some. Are you saying there won't be PvP at launch?

I hope a respawn type system is used when you die and you don't need to be raised.
It might also suck if you needed your armor repaired in the middle of the event.

I liked the WAR system of PvP. Maybe someday... they will make an expansion where you can level beastmen characters and such. Ah ****, not even worth dreaming about if they still haven't even given Pugilist (mnk) a **** kick yet, nevermind something as complicated as that.

Suppose something is better then nothing. :D

There won't be PvP at launch they said recently its on their lowest priority of type of content to add. Long as PvP is useless in the sense no one will -have- to do it (like Ballista, just something you can do on the side) it would be a nice addition though.

I cant see the motivation to PvP in a game without forced world PvP which just wouldnt fit into FFXIV, did PvP in FFXI give anything usefull to PvE?

Nah, just something fun to do with LS mates/friends in past time and to generally test PvE mechanics that weren't completely changed for PvP (e.g people testing out Odin's accuracy etc)

I'm going to use a very old game, Ragnarok Online to show, a game does not have to be forced world PVP to implement PVP successfully. If they're hardworking enough, they can even maintain 2 different mechanics for PVP and PVE. When PVP event is active or in PVP zones, certain skills / abilities will be nerfed, to address class imbalance issues... In the usual world when leveling / adventuring, everyone just loves one another...

Set aside a few zones/event which are open to PVP and give incentives / rewards for someone who wins - where the motivation steps in - PvP specs gear as a reward...hmm ? But how they should go about achieving it, I'll leave this task to the paid professionals to amuse me.

Aaaaand, I laugh. Because I remember a month ago or so people saying that games like WoW forced you to PvP, and "if you wanted to PvP, go play a different game; FFXIV doesn't have any PvP elements and we like it that way." Oh well, so much for that :-P

Which abilities in particular are they talking about that are PvP-specific? Anyone have some good examples?

I'm thinking they're talking about stuff like Trance Chant on Conjurer (makes your next cast immune to interruption). It seems like a good PvE skill were it not for the fact that spells are already about 95% guaranteed to cast in PvE (if you don't believe me, try casting stoneskin while you're moving, no matter how far you go it will still cast). I played OB for 2 weeks and I only had 2 spells interrupted ever in the course of leveling from 1-12 on Conjurer.

PvP would be cool in this game if it were like pokemon in a way, obviously it wouldnt be chocobo fights cause of what it would represent, but something like you somehow capture a mob or whatever, go into ballista and control your mob(or something else that isnt your char) so its mob vs mob, your not actually using your char, and you get char related PvE rewards from it.

Or perhaps it doesnt even need to be fighting, it could be some other type of PvP game, obviously not everyone would like it, perhaps there could be more than one, but the bottom line and point I am getting at is it would be some sort of direct competition between players that would scale a bit from your char stats, and would benefit you in PvE.

Uh... people have always noted that SE would probably bring in a form of pvp like brenner or ballista. If you think SE is going to bring in world pvp you're probably going to be disappointed.
