Pop Culture References in GuildlevesFollow

#1 Sep 14 2010 at 9:58 PM Rating: Excellent
Apparently not everything about Final Fantasy XIV is serious business.

Upon reviewing the Guildleves in our database, we couldn’t help but notice the number of pop-culture references embedded in the quest names. Some of the references are obvious – others, not so much. Also interesting is that nearly half of these references refer to songs, movies and games from the 1980s. That’s probably an indication of Square Enix’s target demographic as well as the ages of the company’s writers.

Here are just a few Guildleves named after pop-culture references – do you know where they’re from? Check your knowledge against the answer key down below!

1. Meet the Flint Stones
2. Get to the Copper
3. When Bats Cry
4. Revenge of the Dodos
5. The Devilet Inside
6. Light for the Rites
7. Got Ingots
8. The Mad Hatter
9. Watching the Shore
10. Canes for the Citizens
11. Pole Positioning
12. I Would Walk 500 Malms
13. Some Like It Wet
14. Saint Allene's Fire
15. Mole Patrol

Answer key: 1. "The Flintstones" (1960); 2. Line by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Predator" (1987); 3. "When Doves Cry" by Prince (1984); 4. "Revenge of the Nerds" (1984); 5. "The Devil Inside" by INXS (1984); 6. "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys (1986); 7. "Got Milk" advertising campaign (1993); 8. Character from "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" (The classic novel from 1865, not the horrid Tim Burton movie from earlier this year); 9. A reference to "Jersey Shore," (2009); 10. "Citizen Cane" (1941); 11. "Pole Position" video game (1982); 12. "I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers (1988); 13. "Some Like It Hot" (1984); 14. "St. Elmo’s Fire" (1985); 15. "Soul Patrol," the fan base of "American Idol" season 5 contestant Taylor Hicks.

Actually, i bet number 15 refers to the WW2 African desert war tv show by the name of Rat Patrol, but i could be mistaken. Seems likely though, since they have Rat moles in game.
The Rat Patrol is an American television program that aired on ABC during the 1966–1968 seasons. The show follows the exploits of four (three American and one British) Allied soldiers who are part of a long-range desert patrol group in the North African campaign during World War II. Their mission: "to attack, harass and wreak havoc on Field Marshal Rommel's vaunted Afrika Korps".

Hate to split hairs here, but that should actually be Citizen Kane.

If any more pop up you should edit the answers out and maybe put them in after a day or two or something to see how people do.

There was one called "Missing Teeth" which I suppose could be a reference to the song "Pulling Teeth". Otherwise I can't think of any that sound particularly like a Metallica song.

If you talk to that mammet during "To Make an Omelette", it has different dialogue.

You are what you love. Not what loves you.

Not as funny, but I found it interesting that it has other lines.

I wonder if the other language versions also have leve names with pop culture references?

Oh and I thought #15 referred to the group Snow Patrol lol.
