This might be too techy to be of any interest to anyone, but I just created a character to try out the bonus items and:

I re-watched the Gridania CS's for the ~10th time. And I noticed that FINALLY specular shaders (shiny metal things) actually look properly shiny! Seems whenever the last update was, they tweaked their shader to finally have proper specularity. It's most noticable on Yda's leg armor which now doesn't look like plastic anymore. But also in other details like that taru's black robe, now it appears that it's supposed to be made of leather rather than cotton. It's even making a nice difference on belt buckles and other small metal bits.

Very nice SE, Keep improving those shaders, at least some people are noticing it ;)

Go have a look for yourselves guys. Pay attention to the shiny things while re-watching the CS's.

Ps: Also i could be crazy but the scene in the adventurer's guild seems to have new NPC's walking around, I thought i saw one with a gun on her waist approaching the counter. False alarm, took a screenshot below, its a cool wand.

At around the same time I changed my graphics card I noticed an improvement in the quality of the water appearance, I thought it was from changing from Nvidia to AMD but now that you mention it, it could of been a patch.

I do think that SE will continue to improve the shaders quietly in the background for the next few months, but I don't think this is possible. I just logged on and was shocked to see that there was no update, whatever the downtime was yesterday, it was all server side. I might have somehow missed the download, but I was watching pretty closely (since I was curious how big of an update it was).

There has been an update since the last time I last watched the CS. And I had also thought I noticed an improvement in the water after the last update, so that must have been the one.

Oh I see. Actually now that you mention it, I did notice that the water in the fountains in Ul'dah (nice touch by the way SE, given that Water is such a precious resource in the desert, it makes sense that the city of decadence has fountains everywhere) was showing a lot more glare than before. I thought it was because it was because I had turned down my settings and the glare shader was to reduce the workload involved in translucency calculations, but if other people noticed a change, perhaps they did make a change to the specular highlights.

CS characters spoiler alert:
Screenshotty shiny goodness.
BTW that last shot is of the 'gun' i thought I saw, now I see it's actually a really bad-*** wand, intersecting into a belt pouch. I'd still like to see some cubemap reflections, but this is already much better than before.

Anyway look at those nice shiny red legs, don't you wanna just lick it!? No? Just me? >.>;
