Please help. I bought a pavilion dv7 laptop about 6 mos ago and paid quite a bit for it.

I have i7 core 720q @ 1.6
6gigs ram
nvidia gt 230m 1 gig with Cuda (whatever that means)

I run the benchmark at 1000 and watching my task manager cpu usage never goes above 25%
I assume its my graphics but HP says it is built into my motherboard and I cant upgrade it.

Is there anyway to put an external graphics card on this laptop?
Can I overclock my Gpu?
Can I adjust any settings to give more processor power to the game?

I have adjusted my gpu for best performance but is does better benchmark when I let the program decide.

I am on all low settings and buffering at 2/3 which seems to help but i can barely play, any help would be greatly appreciated, tks

You can't put external cards on a laptop.

I'd also recommend against any attempts at overclocking. Laptops don't have the ventilation and cooling necessary to handle an overclocked graphics chip. You'll probably end up doing damage to other components because it will overheat.

As for the processor power, the benchmark is really only meant to test graphics. I'm presuming that the reason that the processor is only sitting at 25% is because the processor can handle the data the benchmark is throwing at it, but the graphics card is not.

FFXIV has some pretty hefty system requirements, I wonder if there are any laptops on the market that could really handle it. You'll probably still be able to play, but will need to turn down a lot of the graphics options to get good performance.

There arent many graphics options, so you won't really be able to bottleneck the game very much. You could try reducing the rendered resolution but it hasn't changed the performance for anybody I've known.

I wouldnt recommend playing FFXIV on a non-performance laptop anyways because it will likely overheat. If not, it will still wear down all the components inside due to the stress and wear&tear, along with the heat.

I have almost those exact same specs on my Lenovo Ideapad Y550P. I got a 1250 on the benchmark, but I play the game at low settings just fine. I don't calculate frame rate, but when I'm alone it looks pretty high, but in cities I stutter a lot.

If you're looking to upgrade, I'd wait until release (which isn't that far off) because, as things are now, almost everyone, no matter what specs, can't get above 30fps in cities, which leads me to believe it's only a temporary hitch. :)
