I know open beta characters will very likely be deleted before retail version goes live.

But anyone know where and when did SE state explicitly that they will be deleted?

Of all the betas and launches I have been in, I have never seen characters transfer from beta to live. The most I have ever seen is testers getting a 2 or 3 day head start.

3.2 Accumulated Data during Testing Period
ALL DATA GENERATED DURING THE BETA TEST BELONGS TO COMPANY. DATA ACCUMULATED BY BETA TESTER DURING BETA TESTING WILL NOT BE TRANSFERRED, IN WHOLE OR IN PART, OVER TO THE PUBLICLY RELEASED VERSION OF FINAL FANTASY XIV OR ANY OTHER SUBSEQUENTLY LAUNCHED ONLINE SERVICE. BETA TESTER WILL BE REQUIRED TO START NEW CHARACTERS AT THAT TIME.

You get to keep your name if you play on the same server. Your character as it stands is toast.

I think beta testers from Xbox 360 version of FFXI were able to keep their beta chars
but I guess that was a special case cos they were way behind other platforms

SE did say they will reset the charcter for FFXI xbox360 beta but change in the 11th hour, but like you said the game is already out on other platform for a long time.

If SE dun wipe the OB charcter, players who exploit bug or make used of "its only beta" to earn tons of gils from other beta testers will have an advantage

I'll speak for myself among those not playing as much. I got above 20 on my Archer and decided it was likable. I also tested out all the other class abilities I wanted to stack. I have tried crafting I know what people want and when they want it. I have run out of things to do outside gather data to try to improve this sites information. By run out I mean I'm not pushing a character I can't keep. I've run out of story to play with essentially and am awaiting release with a dang good idea what I will do. I've even explored the released world end to end. Having done that and going to lose the character I am happy with the experience. I am happy that the worst of the nitpicks have already been addressed and I feel like this game will in some time become great.

What remains is to see what changes at release and how soon some of the more needed fixes are available. So far unlike other dealings I've had with SE I am more impressed with them than any of the other mmo companies I have dealt with. They have def been taking great strides to make this world how they and then we want it to be. As a smaller time game developer I see what some of the hangups are. They were expected. They keep a little silent as usual but it isn't like blizzard where the first 2 years of the mmo was a silent unwavering nerf bat to poorly designed classes that only needed redesigned. All that with absolutely no company word on any issue. Warhammer... throw out a large portion of content because it will never work.... LOTRO.... Way Way too much of a wow clone with no good pve or pvp experiences to be had past a certain point. ROM... Let's never address the starting issues then 2 years into the game totally botch it to instability like we just made it last week... AOC... Lets make a world where 8 months in noone can play for 5 minutes without falling thru the world and then should you avoid that, class balance was a foreign concept.... I could continue... The point is SE is doing well so far and I want to see it continue.

Yes. Deletion is 100% sure.
It was stated countless times in countless interviews.
