It seems to be that there are certain monsters that have the somewhat unnerving ability to follow your character around. The first time it happened to my, I was a lvl 6 Thaum running around Gridania and I heard the pitter patter of feet behind me. I spun around and there was this Canopy Galago coming at me. To me there were a Red Icon mob so I thought it was agro and rushing up to kill me, so I yelped and started running, only to have it keeping on following me. I managed to escape it and considered myself lucky until I realised that it wasn't really agro. I know in Limsa, the Dodos can follow like pets and I've had a Copper Coblyn follow me in Ul'Dah.

Any thoughts on why these mobs do this? Or got any stories to share about a 'pet' you've encountered?

I guess it's supposed to be curiosity, but I can't stand it to be perfectly honest. It makes it harder for me to fight sometimes because an unwanted mob decides he wants to tag along and follow me halfway across the zone.

****, they even seem a little bugged at times. If they're following you and you die close enough to your 'home point', they'll turn and start heading to where you pop back up.

And you can add those Aldgoat things to the list of mobs that have a staring problem.

I noticed it too. It scared me at first cause I also wasn't sure what agro'd and what didn't. And when you're super low level, those Coblyns are a little scary if you aren't used to them yet. Once I realized that he wasn't actually going to hurt me I was someone relieved but I still kinda felt like.... "uh.... can I help you?" XD

I heard a theory that it's based on what's in your food bag. So if you had some meat in there, animals that like meat will follow you around. I've not done any testing on that though.

I have to admit, I was nervous the first time a dodo wandered up while I was mining and just... stared at me. I thought maybe I was in it's AI path, but no, it just stood there for ages, blinking and bobbing its head in my direction. I put it down to a bugged path.

Then the goats started doing it. I'd stand there, rummaging through my pack, and by the time I looked up, there were three of them clustered around, wanting to know what I had.

I backed away slowly... and then a little less slowly... and then I just ran back for town.

It was awesome, actually. It's nice to have some company when you're pick-axing up the landscape.

I had a coblyn watch while I was attacking something (rat) outside of Ul'Dah. Its eyes would follow whoever was attacking, like in a tennis match.

It does make using AoEs tricky, but doesn't really bother me. I used to run around the WotG zones in XI to see how many of the mandy mobs I could get to follow me. My highest is 22, got the screenshot somewhere.

I think its just to make you think a little more when fighting, kinda to add a little strategy - if i'm fighting a Spirrigan around a Horde of Coblyns, I try to align my cone shape AoE to avoid the Coblyns and hit only the Spirrigan, or try and avoid AoE all together.

I saw a great video on youtube, can't find it now, but someone was testing out all the emotes on their miqote. She had to keep moving her character and camera around because a dodo keeps going in front of the camera and cocking its head to the side lol.

It's kind of annoying actually... When doing a levequest at the bloodshore camp (rank 20) a whole herd of aldgoat billies decided to follow me.

The quest was to kill 11 stray dodos that were dispersed in one party of 2 and 3 parties of three... its a real ***** to try and fight three dodos at once when you have four mobs that can kill you in two hits staring at you. For starters, I couldn't use aoes, but the real annoyance was that after i killed a dodo it made it really hard to target another one.

I don't mind the novelty or potential strategy alteration involved in mobs that are curious... but atleast in ffxi they'd lose interest after some time... these **** goats followed me for the entire leve, and only left me alone after I ported back to camp.

LOOL! Funny, this happened to me first when I was a lvl 4 Marauder in Gridania. I actually panicked and without thinking I decided to try and kill it before it kills me, and yes... I died... And the funnier thing is, this happened like 5 times before I found out that they just follow you around... -sigh-
