I was googling (is that a word^.^) for FFXIV Goblins, because I want to have them in game so bad. I have thus far been rejecting the idea that Kobolds = Goblins. Though this was admitidly more hope than fact. However I found a quote from an NPC named Vivaki in the Alchemy guild in Ul'dah that talks about the Goblins and also gives an explanation why I am not seeing any. Also if you look in the ZAM database you can find an item from a Gridania Guildleve I believe called Goblin Sweetbox (drives off insects or somethin).

While this is not 1005 proof, I thought it was interesting. Its just nice to see that they are seperately refered too. So Kobold does not necessarily equal Goblin. I do wonder though that if they are not the same then are they like their evil cousins? Thoughts, opinions?

I dunno, maybe it's a Moblin <-> Goblin type thing? Just a different tribe or an offshoot.

... I suddenly miss the Movalpolos theme.

Actually if you look it up in Monster lore a Kobold is what the Germans refer to as a Goblin. They are thought to work in mines. I got this information from the book "The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits" written by Rosemary Ellen Guiley.
Hopefully this clears it up a little. Makes sense with what games use as Kobolds already to me. It's amazing how much into our real lore these games get.

Yep.. I'm a nerd

I remember coming across an NPC in Ul'Dah (don't recall name, it might be the same as your referring) while just randomly talking to every NPC that will give a history of EVERY race related to Eorzea. All the starting races, the 3 beastmen and I want to say maybe garlean. Like I said don't remember who it was or where she was, but I know its in Ul'Dah. When I get home tonight maybe i'll try finding her again, as the information was pretty interesting.

Inserting more nerdism....

But aren't Kobolds derived from the dogs? Besides being basically fowl and nasty...I don't think they are cousins of our beloved gobbies.

The Germans refer to everything in dog form it seems. See "Teufelhunden." As far as any lore I've read goes they're more related to Goblins brownies or Boggarts. Those are all similar things. Now what the game world does with them is another thing. WoW was the first Rat/Dog kobolds I have run across I think.

I briefly played Sacred 2 on PS3. There was a lot of Kobolds on that too.

They were Goblin-like.

Its starting to look like Kobolds can swing both ways.

God I hope my wife does not see this thread of me discussing Kobolds...

There is an NPC in Ul'Dah on the east side (where you start the first quest in UlDah) who talks about some goblin like creatures who traded there. Said something about them having HUGE backpacks which it seemed like they couldnt carry. Also said it seems to be like a thousand year 'pilgrimage' for them to come and trade, then they disappear. He finishes by saying maybe the burst of fresh adventures would bring them back to Ul'Dah...

Was a cool little surprise from the normal 'unimportant' things none crucial NPCs say. It would be really awesome if the players could reach a certain camp and finish the behest (something like that, its an 'area' quest) or do something in the game, that would have goblin trader's come into towns with rare wares.

Yea, I could see them going both ways. But the description sounds similar to that of FFXI, not like the Kobolds who have no packs. The actual reason why I suggested them as cousins but not the same does have to do with lore though, just not German. I'm more familiar with lore from D&D. Goblins are in the Goblinoid family, but are very different in terms of size and appearance than there much Larger cousins the Kobolds. But, yea this is FF, and they do have a knack for following actual mythologies instead of made up ones.

Yes, yes it is. It's in the OED.

Quote:
The transitive verb 'to google' refers to using the Google search engine to obtain information on the Web. A neologism arising from the popularity and dominance of the eponymous search engine, the American Dialect Society chose it as the "most useful word of 2002." It was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary on June 15, 2006, and to the eleventh edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in July 2006.

Goblins and Kobolds are indeed two different creatures. You can read the descriptions that the RPC dug up from the NPCs if interested here.

There are several beast tribe descriptions there.

Thanks for that helpful link Castiel. This makes me believe my beloved Goblins will be with us in FFXIV. Now, if only SE could make playable beastmen, my dream of Goblin World Domination would come true!! /em explodes
