So the Garlean empire destroyed ala mhigo and are using their ruins as a base of operations. Are they controlling the airforce fighting the dragons in the opening sequence? Or are they controlling the dragons and attacking Ishgard with them?
If they have the airforce why are they fighting the dragons? Why not just let the dragons destroy ishgard and then worry about them after? Or are the Garleans allied with Ishgard?

I think the air force in the beginning belongs to Ishgard, which is an order of knights who fights dragons. Also the opening scene takes place in Mor Dhona, while Ala Mihgo was on the other side of Grindia.

See I was wondering about this too re-watching the trailer. But I thought only garlean had the superior tech, airships with pew pew lasers. Maybe the dragons are a problem to both sides, could be a beastmen related thing? As far as I know the beastmen are they're own problem aside from garlean unless i'm mistaken. My other question from the trailer were the beings flying off from the explosion of the airship. To me, the first one looked "somewhat" like ifrit and the second titan? I don't know maybe its a stretch, but that was my initial thought.

I thought the same thing. The beings shooting out of the white/blue light maybe the "guardians", "avatars" or "summons" that we are used to.

I think, or hope, that they will be somehow intergrated into the story and play a part in the missions we will recieve in the main game.

The intro takes place in the past, well the war does. The reason for the Garlean empire fighting the Dragons is unknown.

The rest of this post is pure speculation and theories:
My guess is, the empire wants something that the dragons possess (maybe the power to summon the eidolons/summons/espers/etc that are linked to the aerethyte stream (underground force just like lifestream in FFVII)).

Further I speculate that the four people with tattoos on their necks, that we meet in the opening sequences for each nation. (male white-haired huyr (ul'dah), miquote(limsa), lalafell and female huyr(gridania) are the four warriors of light destined to protect the planet and the aerethyte stream from the garlean empire who wants to abuse its power. (similar stories have occurred in multiple FF games). This is all just speculations created from playing all FF games and general knowledge of Square-enix story telling,. We will probably find out that the empire is evil, the dragons are an independent force trying to protect the planet and we ( the adventurers) are thrown in the middle to observe the epic battle unfold.

Flying ships are Garlean, as the link below shows. The dragons I believe are a tribe all to themselves, which is why the god of the dragons flies down to save the day. If you look on the world map. Its now obvious that the Northern-west part of the world(Sharlayan), with that dragon flying over it, is the dragon tribe's territory(I believe this is correct), which is where the constant battle between Ishgard and Sharlayan(dragons) are taking place(present). On a side note, that trailer takes place 15+ years in the past, so who knows what alliances where forged then in contrast to whats happening now. So, be careful not to get the two periods confused.

Sharlayan is actually the home of the woodland Elezen. There was also mention of Sharlayan by one of the NPCs in Coerthas at one of the camps that indicated that Sharlayan has been destroyed by the Garleans.

One of the NPCs in Mor Dhona also mentions that the Garleans are coming to (or are already in) Mor Dhona to investigate the Keeper of the Lake (dragon/airship crash). The crystals that literally fill that area seem to be aethyrite as well, so that'd be interesting to any industrialized nation wanting to get their hands on more power sources.

I think we're dealing with a number of independent threats in this game:

*Garlean Empire - wants to conquer the world, Persian Empire style
*Beastman tribes - Amal'jaah, Ixan, etc. but also Kobolds, Sahagin, Sylphs. Some tribes have ties to the elemental summons
*Dragons - agenda of their own, Ishgard is fighting them in particular
