Very quiet?Follow

#1 Sep 17 2010 at 2:57 AM Rating: Good
Why is everyone so quiet in game? No one seems to talk to each other much, I for one am a chatty person and it's kinda boring!

Does anyone know why everyone is quiet :s?

People are busy playing the game and figuring things out: I'm sure there'll be endless little social hubs once the retail version is released: after the initial 'new game' smell wears off, people will just stand around and talk for the sake of talking.

I noticed that too. I just got it DL'd and was only in about an hour before I got kicked off for Maint, but the only thing anyone said was when I called "Eric Cartman" the Mithra a ******, he said ".....".

It was quite eventful.

I really, really, hope that thing about "You see all the Linkshell chat from any linkshell in your inventory" isn't in the final game. >_>

I know that while I'm a chatty person when I get going, in beta I'm just too busy still trying things out to want to stop to have a general conversation about nothing, with random strangers, for no real reason. I have game pad settings to figure out still, trying out more crafting classes and all the attenaent attention that takes, making notes on fishing bait, trying to find NPCs, trying to read NPC text.

Hit me up in a month and I'll be willing to emote random amusement at passersby. Too busy working right now! grin.

I don't know. I've had some pretty chatty gilsellers on my server, and some guy called me a "**** sewer" because I was weaving, /shrug.

Hope that guy doesn't ever plan on buying gears from "**** sewers". With that attitude, he won't get very far;)

There are some problems discouraging conversation. The main ones I can see are :

1 -To start typing, you have to hit a key like space first. You can't just start typing the words because so many commands have been connected to letters without ctrl/alt (bad idea). So although it's small, it's annoying to hit space at every sentence. In FFXI, if you hit any letter without Ctrl/alt, it assumes you're typing and starts inputting it as such. It worked, it should be copied.

2 - The major problem, the chat log needs a 50% opaque background. Full transparency makes chat text extremely unlikely to be noticed. It's also a ***** to read it, so I for one avoided conversing altogether.

3 - Can't ctrl-R reply to /tells, so nobody bothers doing private conversations. Not to mention the 2 name thing...

So yeah, as I see things, there are actual forces against conversing in the game right now.

Well put. I wholeheartedly agree with the chat log opacity. Really difficult to see what's going on there when you're in certain areas because the text doesn't contrast well against the terrain. Also, I find that the menu system (I so wanted to preface that with a string of expletives) tends to cancel or reset your text entry field when you're trying to chat.

Actually you can. It's a little backwards right now though. You need to have sent a tel to a person first. Then, hit space to bring up the cursor. You can then Ctrl+R.

Why is the system more complicated than it was in FFXI?

It has its advantages sometimes, I guess. Like, if I'm carrying on a serious conversation with somebody via /tell, and somebody else starts sending me some insignificant /tells, I can continue talking to the first person without having to retype his name. That's really about it though.

To the OP:

Most of my conversation goes to my LS, personally. And although I haven't done much partying in FFXIV, I'm pretty sure that I'll be a big talker in parties as well. I don't do nearly as much talking in /say or /shout.

I'm moreso talking about why you need to click on the chat box before the shortcut works.

There no point arguing with bsphil he hates this game and just can't let it go. If I see something being complained about 9/10 times it is him doing it. If only this could be FFXI with better graphics eh?

Heh, I had that skill capped right away...for as much as I spent logged in you'd think I should have maat's cap and other such hardcore gear, but so much of my time was spent yappin' away on Vent and in LS chat or /say & /shout in town...
