I've only had 2 days to play the beta and have tried all three cities. So far I think Im going to be a Marauder/Blacksmith/Miner but my favorite city is Uldah. The Marauders guild is located in Limsa Lominsa as is the Blacksmithing guild. Is it going to be like FFXI where certain races get a bonus for starting in their home cities? and how easy is it to travel within the three cities once you get a higher level? Thanks.

Traveled to LL from Ul'Dah at lvl 5 and no problems. As for your other question I have no idea, but was wondering the same thing.

No.

I traveled from Limsa Lominsa to Western Thanalan (the outer edges of Ul'dah territory) via ferry, and from there to Ul'dah, to Gridania on foot at rank one. Took about an hour total. Don't forget to attune yourself to the Aetherytes along the way so you can teleport there later.

Its not important in the sense that you can travel from city to city quite easily - I originally planned on starting in Ul'Dah because the Blacksmith guild is there and because Ul'Dah looks amazing but then I made a character in Gridania and now I'm dead set on starting there. First thing my LS is going to do is travel to the 3 major cities in a group, grab crystal points and warp back to Ul'Dah or wherever - you can do it solo too within about 1-2 hours.

It is important in the sense that you should choose a city with guilds pertaining to what you'll be starting as in regards to crafting/combat classes since you'll most likely spend a lot of time there. In my case I'm choosing aesthetics and atmosphere over convenience but if its not a good pay off for you, choose wisely i guess.

Also other players can teleport you to locations you haven't visited.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

For some crafters, I guess it's the type of shards/crystals that drop from the mobs. I would really like to start out at Gridania but there are not enough mobs that drop a certain shard type. So I'm stuck with Lima Lominsa. But one I reach around rank.10ish, I should have enough shards to relcoate over to Gridania.

I went with Uldah. Its the easiest to naviagate, had the most interesting opening story, and is between the other cities, so I can make a quick trip to either of the others if need be.
