Which FF14 edition are you getting?Follow

So beside the fact you get neat items for CE and a week play ahead, I don't see the point of ordering/getting it first. The extra content is something I don't really care for, it's only the week play ahead that I really want. However, the bonus items SE gives you is totally BS. CE gets onion helm, which decreases rez time from 5min to 1min I believe. The standard gets a goggle which increases the rate of your skills you gain. So really, it makes the 1 week play really on CE looks like crap and in the long run, wouldn't it be better to get the standard edition?

What do you guys think? I already ordered the CE on amazon with 1 day free shipping on the 22nd, but I'm thinking about cancelling it and getting the standard.

The Goggles are meant to be an offset for the 1-week head start people get. It's been stated by a Developer (forget who said it) that the Goggles don't ALWAYS increase your skill gain indefinitely. They are meant to give you increased skill gains in the 'early stages' or to 'catch up' with people who got the 8 day head start. It's my thought process that the item will become ineffective after a certain Physical Rank, etc.

In the end - it's up to you. I think the leveling will all balance out in the end - the people with more time to dedicate will just have a wider spread of the crap leveled or what have you.

I chose to get the CE - as long as the Onion Helm doesn't disappear/break/can be repaired or doesn't lose Durability (or something) it will be a benefecial item to have. I also would like to get in early - a bunch of people I know IRL are doing it and we're all taking vacation from work. LAN parties commence!

Hmm...guess me's a bit of a collector. I don't care too much about the in-game items, the little headstart is nice though, me's so excited about what the retail version has to offer compared to beta. Other than that, no real reason other than just owning it. ^^

CE...I forget when & where, but I remember in some interview they mentioned the goggles having a short life while the onion helm would be useful longer. That could be wrong though, I'm not 100% on that. Either way I want the extra stuff from the CE along with the early start...

I work 9-5 monday to friday, so my plan was to get the collector's edition on wednesday the 22nd after work. I was going to take thursday off to play all day, and friday I'm getting out of work early for a legit reason that I told them about a month ago. So this should give me a nice amount of free time to enjoy the launch.

Do you want the onion helm model or the goggles model? The actual effects of each are going to be negligible in the long run. Going to tell you right now that the release is going to be plagued with bug fixes, server maint., and other issues as SE gets the servers running. Don't be shocked when you still aren't able to play for chunks of the early release time that you paid extra money for.

I see, but then again what's the point of giving CE players week ahead then. I guess its fairness for Standard ed. players, but not so fair for CE. =/

Yeah, I'm expecting crashes and fixes ASAP of course.

I'm also expexting not being able to log in because I have to register all my codes and that website is going to be congested as all get out too.

Either way - I'm happy for paid vacation. Been a long time coming and I've got plenty to keep me busy for my nice 7 day retreat.

I do like the Goggles more - but my Alchemist starts with SPECTACLES. So, I'll get over it.

I'll be getting the CE that was mentioned for the PS3. It's killing me having to wait till March, but that's just the way it is. No, I have no clue what's in the PS3 CE, but they said there was gonna be one so that's what I plan on getting.

You'll still get some extra playing time over the standard version. Just don't be surprised when there are a lot of problems at release that require maintenance to fix (since that happens to pretty much every MMO).

That was actually what pushed me to get the CE. Got my ffxi account hacked years ago because of flash exploits.

Wasn't fun.

For people with jobs that don't sit and post 16 hours a day on a forum for a game they dislike, a few dollars is nothing.
I can hardly wait for release so I can spend more time enjoying the game as opposed to being here browsing for new and exciting info, only to come across your negativity in every single thread. This community would be far better off without your constant complaints and negativity about the game. My hope for you is that you just bring yourself to delete your account and go off and find something you actually ENJOY doing. It's probably a lot healthier.

The sad thing is I got the CE purely to play early. I'm not even 100% sure what comes with it. Like I just learned from this thread that I'll apparently be getting a security token.

I'm only getting the CE for the fact: I can play the game early. Sure, it's cheaper to wait a week, but, if you are REALLY interested in playing this game, why wait? That's like a child saying "meh" to Christmas day, and waiting til January to open their gifts.

Realistically, start time aside, there's the bonus factor. People debate over Onion Helm vs Garland Goggles. Whatever. In the long run, will you be wearing either of those items CONSTANTLY? Or will you be wearing more level/class appropriate gear for the most part, putting those special items in storage after some time? And for the uninitiated (or dangerously brave), there's the Security Token that comes with that CE. If you ever played any MMO, you've probably know or heard of a few people who have had accounts hijacked. This little item adds to your account security, is itself a $10 iirc, and last I checked, was rare to even get one thru SE as of late. I got one when they first went out last year, so I'm good. But never hurts to have a back up, or to give to a friend.

Now, all the other stuff is nominal, but really, I just came for the head start.

Why does everyone knock the P2P transfers? During the open beta I've had no problems getting my full bandwidth to download the client and patches. Did you guys setup your port forwarding properly?

jeeeez i feel kinda embarassed now, am i reallllyyy the only one out here who was excited to order CE for the Travel Journal and behind the scenes DVD? lol the early access is nice and all, but i guess i am just kinda a nerd wanting it more for the fancy box and Journal, guess there arent really any "collectors" out there ordering it for the goods that come with it! Oh well, "to each his own" i guess.

Cheers!

I ordered the CE so that I can start playing with a slightly less loaded server (albeit one most likely prone to early release crashes and instability) so that I can have a week of casual puttering and get a foot in the door before the starter zones are crawling with people rushing to get to the level cap so they can complain about a lack of endgame content.

I ordered the CE so that six weeks or six months or six years from now, when some braindead numpty tries to use the, "Oh yeah?!? Well I've been playing since the CE release!" card as their last ditch attempt to prove that they're right about something stupid (when they're really wrong) I can be like, "Ya, so have I and you're still an idiot."

I ordered the CE because, after putting off the decision about whether or not to buy the game at all, I finally reached a place where I was satisfied not only with what SE has done but with how they have handled themselves throughout the testing process and what they have said they're going to do and $25 isn't going to make or break me either way.

As far as journals and DVDs and all that other stuff...I could care less. Security token is a nice little bonus. The rest of the box contents will likely end up in the bottom of a desk drawer somewhere beside my Spore Collector's Edition crap.

I too ordered the collector's edition for the jornal and dvd. I also don't really care much for the 'head start' it comes with. I'm also just a sucker for collector's editions. Any game I have that had a collector's edition I most likely bought it. If an Art Book is ever involved I don't hesitate, it's my favorite part of collector's editions.

My boyfriend and I both went for the collector's edition. I like the idea of starting early. True it will be more buggy and proneto crashing but that shouldn't be 24/7. I also really want the security token. Even having my WoW account hacked was a week-long nightmare and blizzard's recovery process is more efficient than square's was for FFXI (it took an LS memberat least a month for his hack to be resolved). I don't want to risk it on a game ill likely be more tied to than WoW. Finally, im a fair lover of journals so that's a nice bonus (even though i am going to do my FFXIV journaling online). The ingame item has little to do with my preference though I suppose I prefer the helm despite its ugliness. It seems more unique and FF-esque at least.

Yeah, I just didn't notice, it was my fault for not paying attention.

I get most of my games early, though I do not play them until release date. Nor do I condone playing them before street date.

Eh I really don't care that much about the contents that come with the CE version, I'm only getting it because I have never gotten the "Collector's Edition" of anything before. When a game comes out I never shell out for the extra features and goodies, but I figured I'd give that a shot this time. I don't care about the security token, I have one I use already from when the Mog Satchels were introduced in FFXI. At first it was a pain to use but I've grown accustomed to it now.

Personally I don't think it is worth to buy the CE. I don't care about extra's which goes on the shelf eating dust and the extra week, well after a year you can not see the difference anyways :)

Lots of people listing security token as a reason to get CE. If you read carefully in one of SE's latest news items, you'll notice that new security tokens will be going on individual sale at launch.

Personally I'm getting it for early access, and the art book. So it bettah be good!

I'm getting the regular version.

There have only been 2 times in my life that I've ever bought a collector's edition game. The first was Guild Wars, and the second was Oblivion (because they were out of regular copies).

In neither case did I feel the extras were worth what I paid for. The only thing I'd buy the FFXIV CE for is the earlier access, but that's not worth an extra $25 to me. Plus I like the goggles far more than the onion helm.

There was never any doubt about that. It's the same token most of us obtained for FFXI. SE had claimed a "shortage" for a while, many people still waiting to get theirs. I personally believe it was all so SE could horde them, to use as a "Bonus Item" for FFXIV. I can only imagine them actually having a true shortage once they start to build up subscription numbers. But you can't beat "it's in the box, you have it on Day 1. Enjoy". Granted, I think it's about half of what you pay extra for the CE over SE, but still....

8 days early. :)

I'm the CE. I would really rather have the glasses over the helm as a cosmetic issue, but everything else is worth it for me. Honestly, I'm kind of a CE freak. Even if I never take a second glance at some of the extras, the specialness makes it worth it for me. I even bought the special edition strategy guide for FF XIII because there wasn't a CE for the game, lol.

I do wish there were more trinket like extras in the CE though. The WOW Cataclysm CE has a mouse pad which is something that's simple but really useful for a PC game. The FFXIV branded SE token is nice, but I'm actually a little hesitant to add one more step to the log in process.

Oh i knew it would be available later. But I figured a security token, a week of early play, buddy pass for a friend, and concept art book, and vanity helmet in game were worth about $25. If in that free week I spend one extra night at home instead of going out, its already paid for itself.

Soooo.. did anyone else notice the "leather adventurer's tumbler" and wonder what that's all about?

It's mentioned and shown in the pre-live coverage, yet I've never seen that in any description of the game.

The FFXIV Collector's Edition, in all its glory. Some of the special goodies it comes packaged with that we can see here are the behind-the-scenes DVD, FFXIV–branded Security Token, travel journal "filled with pages of never-before-seen concept art," the beautifully illustrated ********* Amano box cover, and the leather Adventurer's Tumbler.

Was there already a flamewar over this that I missed?

I am getting the CE because well.... I always get the CE of MMOs that I buy.

I REALLY want the Goggles, but I am not going to buy an SE version just for them. (On a side note: Does anyone know if the Goggles is a separate code or is it linked to the registration key that comes with the game? I can see a lot of people selling the code if it is a separate entity)

Hopefully, I can buy different Goggles/Glasses early in the game so I may look stylin' while "leveling" up.

I generally like to get collectors editions when I am able to. The onion helm doesn't thrill me (idk if there's a way to select for it not to show, but if there is, that would be good); the certificate is no big deal; I do like the idea of getting to go ahead and start the game on the 22nd - not because of trying to get ahead of anyone or anything, but more just because I can't wait to play the real game.

The things I do really like the most in the collectors, though, are the security key and the journal. Those and the early start both make it worth the extra few bucks. I've been using a key in my Wow game since they first came out with them and I do think it is a great security measure. So I'm looking forward to having that.

All in all, I can hardly wait until September 22! Yay!
