I have not seen this discussed much, and seeing how the launch is getting very close I figured it would be a better time than any to get the ball rolling of which server would other FFXI players would like to join in on together. Selbina seems like a logical choice.

I'm debating whether I want on a server like this, or prefer a fresh crowd that might be more open minded to new philosophies around this game (taking it easy, not grinding everything to perfection etc). new people would probably be more willing to adventure and less focused one hurrying to be the first to each every milestone, playing the economy, etc.

Think I'll just random server it.

since there isn't any server whose name is related to the concept of Pandemonium (or even related to the mythology) I'll probably be randoming myself, it worked out perfectly in XI for me

To be honest I don't think one server is going to be big enough for all the FFXI refugees.

These official forum things are kind of a misnomer. Just like there is an official EU server, although on two of my characters nether are on the "official" one, I have come across a lot of Brits.

People should just go to the server they like without worry of whos there. The game is made better with a collage of players then everyone go to so and so server. It makes it far more interesting that way.

You would think ex-FFXI players would make up a huge playerbase, they will be on every server.

I don't think a dedicated server really needs to be made for anyone other than RPers and those who specifically speak a certain language or are from another part of the world. Most MMOs you'll find a majority of Japanese players will make their homes specifically on a certain server and then spread out to smaller communities on different servers. It's normally easier to find someone who speaks your language on a server where majority of them gather to. For roleplayers (RPers) having a dedicated server helps them gather together with the same people as often the RP community is much smaller than any other found in a MMO that doesn't actively support RP.

Like posters above stated FFXI players will make up the majority of the population in the game as it is, so trying to dedicate a server specifically to them is kind of pointless. It's probably gonna happen on a number of servers anyway where the population will be made up of 90% or more of former or current FFXI players.

It makes a little sense to have a specifically FFXI server, there are people who have the opposite opinion to mine above : They only want 'serious' players in their server, and want everyone to play like veterans from day 1. Those people would go to Selbina to have a higher chance that it would be so.

As a result although most servers would have a large FFXI count, Selbina would have a much higher % of them, and probably the most 'elite' types of payer would be there, making for a server that feels a lot more 'down to business' and less 'playful' than others.

But this will only work if this 'plan' is community-wide known.

Well I'm totally behind naming Selbina as the FFXI veterans server. My party experience has just been horrible in the beta compared to how things were in FFXI. People don't even care about trying to make a party that works, they just lump together a bunch of people, even when half are rank 6 and the other half are rank 12+. At least FFXI veterans understand that we should be trying to figure out what the party dynamics are, even if we don't yet know what works and what doesn't.

I've got a better idea! Why don't we make a server for current/former Final Fantasy XIV players! People who have or are going to play Final Fantasy XIV should pick from one of these servers:

That way, you'll be sure to play with other people who have the same interest as you, Final Fantasy XIV! Pass the message along, everyone!

Seriously, no matter what server you roll on, you're going to find all sorts of people. You'll run into kind and cruel, talkative and quiet, casual and hardcore players wherever you go. Like in FFXI, just because there was a server called Valefor doesn't mean that only FFX fans played on there. Just because there was a server called Shiva doesn't mean that only people who liked winter played on there! Pick a random server, pick a server name that you like, pick one that your friends are going on. Just have fun!

coming from a ffxi vet, this is just plain dumb. this whole 'official server' mess is just that...a mess. The only official server idea that's somewhat reasonable is that of the RP'ers, and even then, if it ain't made official by SE, it just ain't official.

Geez, when did everyone become so cynical? A majority of you are very gameplay focused and might want a fresh start with people new to this online series, which is fine, but I think a lot of you are overlooking the point of this suggestion. It's not about getting together with veteran players to play hardcore. It was for the community of the game. A server in which a lot of us have common roots and can relate to one another to a certain degree. Or maybe even run into some old friends. Only a suggestion for ffxi players who havn't made up their mind yet.

Then again I am old school so the community is important to me, and a lot of it what kept me playing was the awesome community. It's kind of a shame to see this valued less and less over time. I blame WoW for this flux of end gamers, but what can you do.
